  • legoboyfan2, Many of the landing craft were crewed by Brit RN crews, & they took well over 100 casualties at Omaha, & there were RN cruisers & destroyers as well as 2 fine French cruisers in addition to our USN ships providing fire support. There were USA troops & sailors & ships at the Brit & Canadian beaches also in support roles. Total USA casualties (all KIA, WIA, & MIA) are ~4,700 or so at Omaha.

  • may all the Americans that died on Omaha beach. Only Americans took Omaha beach but resistance weakend the germans. thanks American, and all Allied solders who served and serving in war. Omaha beach was I Belive the most well defended of them all. Just Because all the bombers that did bombing runs to weaken the beaches, well all the bombs that stuck omaha beach were not accuret so thats why it was the most well defended beaches. i can't Imagen being there that day. God bless Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rest in peace forgot that

  • Merci beaucoupe! Vive la France! Libertad! From Detroit, Michigan.

  • Very touching. American, French, Canadians, British, etc. Love them all.

  • Thank you so much for remembering our brave US soldiers that were lost in this tragic but decisive battle. God bless you. But us americans cant take all the credit. I must say that the British, Canadians, and the French Resistance also played a big roll in the normandy invasion. We probably couldn't do it with out them. But yet again thank you for remembering what these brave men did.

  • God bless you.

  • to think of our brave soldiers stormin that huge expansive beach....haunting. must have been terrifying. god bless them all

  • Its so peaceful there its hard to believe that so much blood was shed in the water and sand. Its hard to believe my grandpa survived that ferocious battle.

    fuck nazism

  • If your grandpa is still alive. Tell him I've got great respect for him and his fellow heroes who fought that day on the beach...

  • Im sorry to say he died of old age 3 years ago but thank you a bunch for your support, Im proud to know that someone still cares.

  • @zimpiko28 I have great respect for your grandpa and all US and Allied heroes Just wanted to let you know a few still care thanks again.

  • excellent post - reminds the world that not all of France has forgotten the price paid for her..and that not all french are anti-american..

  • I honor of all the souls that are walking that beach and that are walking all over Europe, may you rest in peace soldiers, thanks to you today we are not only blond with blue eyes but we are different from eachother. Thanks guys !!!

  • Wow dude you know in that beach there are like more then 800million souls walking and running in that beach... Since Americans and frence soldiers died there... then theres like 8000million souls in the beach or spirits.

  • This is probably the American's humour...

The frogs have not humour ;-)

Thank you for what you've done, we will never forget as you certainly do not forget what we did for you...

Do not believe that the french do not like american, quite the opposite, but who loves good, well chastises

    PS:sorry for my english...but I'm french^^

  • have you ever been to the Norman beaches?

  • Thank you for recognizing.

    French are ass'

But We love them all the same. ;)

A true american will sacrifice himself for anyone, Not just his kin.

  • Im swedish im neutral :P

  • People.. please make logical and considerate comments. Enough with the neo-con ignorant comments about how America is great and everyone else should be kissing our ass... We owe just as much, if not more, to the French then they owe to us.

:P I'm done... lets see if anyone actually responds lol...

  • There were millions of displaced people across Europe, and if they were not looked after there was a great risk that they would turn to communism-- just as many other poor and suffering groups of people had. Something is always better than nothing, and communism provided an immediate something.

  • You need to read a book; the United States spent 50 years trying to topple communist governments across the world. Once the Soviet Union developed their Atomic Bomb, it was simply a stalemate. If the United States could have, they would have liberated or tried to aid the satellite nations.

Just recalled one more thing.. If the United States had immediately started a war with the Soviet Union, who would be left to help rebuild Europe? All of Europe was in economic turmoil and in ruins.

  • Nomorefooling, the United States pressed the Soviet Union to allow free elections in the nations they had liberated from Germany and established puppet communist governments in. However, after the treaty of Yalta and the ending of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union became grave enemies. The United States could have fought the Soviet Union then and there, yes, except one thing... millions of US soldiers had already died and people were tired of the long war.

  • Thank you France for this gesture. Although I personally would never fight in a war, mostly because certain American policies disgust me, I do appreciate the sacrifices made by the French people for America. This was an excellent way to show appreciation, I am truly touched by this video.

  • Would you have fought in this war?

  • Probably not. I am not the fighting type, I would have tried to be part in some sort of "egg-head" research. Regardless of what I say though, the draft was still active back then, I wouldn't have had much of a choice :P

  • ya definately

  • ur a dumbass who contradicts himself.

  • France did not fight in World War II because they realized they would lose millions of men when they had only 20 years earlier lost nearly an entire generation of men in World War II. It was not because they were cowards or for any other reason. Read about the Battle of Verdun, that is merely one example of what the French people went through during World War I.

For any French who have read some of these disgusting comments, please accept my apology for the stupidity of some Americans.

  • All of you need to realize that this was a gesture for the Americans that died on Omaha Beach trying to take France back from Nazi-Germany and open up a second front in World War II. Forget all the other bullshit. That is why they did this. France, in my opinion, is a greater ally to the United States than anyone. Regardless of the US abandonment at times, and the stereotype that the two nations hate each other is false. I was just in France a week ago and that was certainly not the case.

  • Free Europe? The only thing America did was to ensure Soviet victory in Europe and putting 400 million people into communist slavery.

  • The Statue of Liberty wasn't a "christmas gift", but a gift to the US for the Centennial birthday of the country. The French never asked us to go into Vietnam. It was over 4 years after they left that we decided to go ther and get involved!! The French had nothing to do with our involvement there. We could have stayed out after they left, but no, we just had to stick our noses deep into it. What grade did you attain before dropping out of school?

  • Do you actually read any books? I ask because you're an embarrasment to other Americans, myself included. You clearly have no clue what you're talking about, yet you havr the arrogance to tell others to "learn history". All you're here to do is tell the world you hate France and the French. There are plenty of people who enjoy spitting on the graves of the French, I'm sure they'd love having you. So now F-off!

  • @WW2tactics, USA supported France in Vietnam with military & civilain technicians, pilots, etc. & eventually supplied 75% of the equipment used by the French. When Ho took over hanoi the USA sent carrier aircraft to honor his victory & uniformed OSS officers were on the review stand with Ho. Unfortuantely due to Cold war politics etc. we became involved in there when there possibly may have been a peaceful solution. I don't know, but there have never been free elections held in Vietnam.

  • oh yeah, we didnt help/influence their constitution or their revolution... they just gave us the statue of liberty as a christmas gift... One more thing, they did not warn us about getting involved. The french asked us if we wanted to take their place to win the indochina war. Eisenhower initialy said no way to the french. But the threat of communism forced him to start aiding the french in the war. Asshole, learn our history before you type.

  • Ever heard of Yorktown? Marquis de Lafayette? Shit-head. Shut up! Your embarassing yourself.

  • great video.Only wish that americans would show the same respect for the french people and France for helping the americans to become a free nation. But i guess that will never happen..sadly enough

  • I'm an American and I share your feelings. Please keep in mind that not all Americans hate the French, only the anti-French Neo-Cons and their chicken-hawk minions do. I for one, recognize the immense sacrifices France made during WW 1 and 2. I'm ashame to see so many of my fellow Americans pissing on their memories.

Vive La France!/God Bless the USA!

  • ummm..... the french almost did next to nothing in ww2. they surrendered in less than a year, yes the french resistance did alot. but the french did not fight the best.

lets see here, the french helped us winour freedom, for that im gratful, but lets see what we've done for them....

    1. helped them withe their revolution

    2. saved them in ww1

    3. LIBERATED THEM IN WW2

    4. aided and supported them during the french indochina war

every french person ive met has been an ignorant asshole to us

  • So, if the French did "next to nothing in

ww2" as you say, how did they lose over 210,000 soldiers killed? Did you just decide it was ok to ignore that? To answer your 4 points:

1-what on Earth did we do to help the French during their revolution?

2-We didn't save anybody in WW 1, the French (and the Brits) did 97% of the fighting until we finally decided to get on board, then we did so with their help. The fact is, they did most of the fighting and dying, we were Johnnys-come-lately.

  • 3-yeah, we liberated them in WW 2, but there were a very many Free French troops also fighting for THEIR freedom, so we weren't exactly fighting alone, but I see you're willing to pretend they didn't exist either.

4-As for Indochina, yeah, we helped them with loans and material aid. They lost it, and then they tried to warn us against getting involved there.

I'm sure a lot of French think you're an ignorant asshole too, but that doesn't mean it has to reflect on the rest of us Americans.

  • u r right we didnt fight alone, the soviets and brittish fought along side us. never said france never fought you dumb fuck. i said thry gave up qucikly. if they fought so hard, then how come paris was taken without a bomb dropped on it? Hey dumbass, if you read my comment more carefully, youll relized that i gave the french resistance their credit.

  • Paris was declared an open city to prevent it's destruction. Also, judging from the language you use against those you hate, I'm assuming you're 10 years old? You really need to pick up a book and read it.

  • yeah, it was declared an open city because france did not want to fight for their freedom, thats why almost none of the major cities were bombed in france. thank you for proving my point!

    :)

  • If any point was proven, it's that you don't know anything. I agree with ww2tactic, you really need to pick up a book before making stupid comments. I'm American too, and you ARE an embarassment to the rest of us.

  • u need to learn your hitory. you are the embarassment. foriegners know more about the united states than you... pretty sad...

  • Very touching! Thanks to the people who did this! As an American, I wish we show the same spirit for the French soldiers who were killed and buried in Yorktown, but unfortunately, most of my fellow Americans have completely forgotten and do not care. I'll always remember though! Vive Lafayette!

  • Agreed 100%! Well said!

  • Im Franco American n I think, being that,I represent what this event was about, the unity n friendship of two countries. Im both the Liberators n the Liberated. It was very moving. I encourage the people who made this happen to continue doing so. It was n amazing success, whether it was easy or not to gather up thousands of people, hardass,it made a huge difference,n it opened the eyes of a lot of americans,i know, who didnt like the french much.

I m proud to be both.

  • heh... doesn't sound like there were any french involved in this at all... figures

  • sorry, almost all were french but the young fellows holding the flags...

  • can't be too hard to gather up a few hundred or thousand French fascists with Sarkozy in power and all.

  • open minded

  • they were the letters....... the kids holding the flag were from georgia and alabama traveling with people to people and was asked to hold the flag

  • There's more to France than what you read in the papers. Thanks for posting this and thanks to all the people who helped hold the flags and spell the words.

  • I was there. I was one of the little dots holding the America flag. Haha. :]

  • Such a beautiful and touching video. Congratulations! I felt a great sense of solidarity. Thanks a lot. Sophie

  • I am also a student ambassador from the USA and my delegation is from Alabama. We were holding the French Flag! i was on the left side at the very end! It was an experience that i will never forget! thank you so much for the opportunity!

  • Courtney, from an Alabamian, thank you for participating in this touching commemoration.

  • To: OLDCOWBOY, My delegation an i didn't know at first we were going to be participating in this, but when we got there we were all so excited to be a part of it! so i'm honored that i got to do that for my country.... and my fellow alabamians! :)

  • oh thats awesome! i know it was my favorite part!

  • Me and my family were on holiday in Colleville and we participated too. We stood in the last "E", together with some pupils from Washington D.C. It may sound strange, cause we are Germans, but have you ever thought about the alternatives to D-day? The Germans own the Americans a lot... lets not forget it.

  • I am a Student Ambassador. I was with People to People from the USA. I was in the back row holding to American Flag.
