  • They sounded better last night in KC at the Crossroads

  • I love this song, and the way they perform it, my band is going to learn it, it will be a tribute as we are not this talented. Good video here!

  • Fans of marijuana would love this song, no doubt. They might make this tune one of their anthems. That might not be what they were singing about, but I can see it.

  • This was a joke song they wrote,They had NO IDEA that it would be one of their biggest hits of all time.. Love this song..

  • On more than one occasion I've been several tokes over the line

  • Nice, I remember playing this 45 (I still have) when I was little...cool. I live in KC now, and didn't know that story, about KC MO/KS...nice!

  • Totaly awesome seeing these two. Thanks =)

  • I was staying at the Westport Trucker Underground Newspaper in KC in 71 and met these guys & hung out. At 18 that was a highlight of youth. Just to mention this brings back alot of memories at age 57. Take care Tom & Mike, "Watch the line" Peace.........

  • I was there. Loved it.

  • @wiseoneetest hahahah

  • This was an anti-drug song.

  • @jaytf123 Wrong. Note how they say" I wanna be One Toke Over The Line" later in the song. This was/is a pro cannabis song-but keep tellin yourself that.

  • @DankFaktory Not my words. That's from an interview I heard with Brewer and Shipley.

  • They was in 70s when they were on the top. They're old now, maybe about 70.

  • @wiseoneetest CLEVER

  • sweat juess were the words that made this song a hit but why ???

  • Because a radio station or something was looking to put more gospel music on their airwaves and this song somehow was mistaken to be about Jesus lol

  • @Caltwentynine thanks,never thought of it . RIGHT ON!!

  • Just loved this song! Still ply it on 45

  • Great video, and they still sound fantastic. I saw the Lawrence Welk version of this and just couldn't quit laughing.

  • You are kidding, right? There was a Lawrence Welk version?

  • Yes It's on You Tube somewhere.

  • I found it. It's called toking with Lawrence Welk by Shipley T.

  • That was just fantastic. It really made my day! Thanks, guys.

  • Apparently this song was finished as brewer and Shipley were crossing the Kansas/Missouri border heading to Union Station on their way to catch a train. They were late because they got too stoned. Kansas City natives, like myself, would probably appreciate that info

  • TheEmmag25:

Hah, that story is awesome! I just met Shipley a few days ago, and now as I look into all his work I'm finding all the ties to the Midwest they've had all their lives.

    Thanks.

  • one toke ova the lineeeeeeeeee !!!

  • please come to south italy

  • My favorite song

  • I saw Brewer and Shipley with my main squeeze Donna in the Summer of 1970. Free concert at Loose Park in Kansas City. What memories!

  • I can't believe your comment. I was just browsing and thought about these guys. I was in K.C. and a couple of other ones.Nice to know that there are a few of us who appreciate those days.

  • ha ha - carlsbaddKC remembers 1970.

  • whit whit mary one toke over the lineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Please come to South Australia !!!!!

  • I think I'll go show off my smile!

  • I grew up in KC and listened to Brewer and Shipley at the Stan Plesser's Vanguard Coffee House on Main Street in the mid-60's. In 1972 I was walking down a street in Bangkok, Thailand and heard One Toke Over The Line coming from a Thai music store ... sung in Thai. Universal appeal anyone.

  • a friend of mine thought areosmith's "walk this way" was Born to sway, hes walking around singing born to sway

  • I remember the first time I heard this song was in the hills of north Ga. partying at the lake one summer afternoon. My older sister had a 8 track or something like that not really sure but we were burning down the house if you know what I mean and this song was so apropos. Good times, sure do miss them!!!!!!!

  • I have to say this but when I was younger I first heard this and honestly thought the title to this song was Warren told Gomer the Line! I know it is ridiculous and kinda silly but I still loved the song and got the point to it but I wondered to myself who the heck are these people and what are they doing?? But I my Aunt set me straight after I made her cry with laughter upon telling her to play that Warren told Gomer song. Now I know! Just thought I would share!!

  • "Warren told Gomer the Line." ROFLMAO!! I went back and listened and can see how you thought that.

I saw Brewer and Shipley in 1977 at Kansas University. They were good. Good memory. One thing that comes to mind is that they were backed up by a guy named Danny Cox. Don't know why I remember that, but I do. He was a black folk singer as I recall...just him and his guitar.

Somewhere out there is a guy named Danny Cox, whose claim to fame is that he once opened for Brewer and Shipley!

  • Danny Cox is alive, well, and still based in KC playing wonderful music of his own pen and others, acting in theater, and vocaling commercials. He played in KC as long, if not longer than Brewer & Shipley and with them heraling back to the days of the Vangard Coffeehouse in the late 60's & early 70's. A fire burned his house down in Early 2008 and Brewer & Shipley played one of the many benefits for him. A sweet soul and talented perfromer Danny is.

  • How cool. Posts like this one are my favorite thing about the internet. An update on a guy I saw 30+ years ago for about an hour.....who would have guessed he maintained some prominence?

I remember him because I went to the show with 2 friends. Danny as I recall was a pretty large, athletic fellow. Two of us were teasing the third (who was a bit stoned) that he should charge the stadium and tackle Cox. Luckily, he ignored us.

Thanks for that stroll down memory lane!

  • I agree, this series of messages is a perfect example of the power of the web. Usually youtube comments aren't this interesting/informative!

  • What a trip! I remember walking with my friends through the Milwaukee Summerfest grounds in...I think it was 1974. These guys were playing around noon. I remember the sound was very clear, but we thought they were kind of folky and boring. ( I was into Alice Cooper) Nice memories though :) Might even have a cassette tape of this buried somewhere from my GE portable tape recorder. I think that was the same day we saw George Carlin get arrested for swearing on stage. Summer, tank tops and pot.

  • If you want it to be Leagalized, or at least Decriminalized Give me a thumbs up.

  • ROFLLLLLLLLLL

  • I love this song!!

  • "One Toke Over the Line" - A medley of all their hits!

  • haha! That's about right!

  • Listen to the Marmony and the 12 strings sing, Thats what counts, Its part of America ,, like Glenn Miller was in WW2, Just music and sounds - An American Classic

  • Right On!!! you are so right Mike. (I assume you meant harmony.)

  • One toke? You poor fool!

  • If you dont understand it --you shouldn't comment

  • LOL if youuu don't understand, youuu should comment!

Watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... you'll understand

  • just wait until you start seeing those godamn bats

  • woooooo helll yeehhhhh!!!!

  • Actualy compared to other U TUBE vids this has the best sound and harmony

  • My dad the singer Jimmie Rodgers used to live next door to Mike Brewer in Forsyth MO. Mike is a great guy. One day I went over to his house and he had a baby deer in the kitchen that his dogs had chased into the house. We sat on the floor with this deer for hours just hanging out like it was an everyday occurance. Nice to see this video. Michael Rodgers

  • a great KC memory

  • great song,I remember the 8-track and drive-in movies and my first sip of beer was a Black Label. haha

  • One of these guys has as restaurant in Kirbyville, Forsyth or one of these little towns in Southwest Missouri just outside of Branson, Mo

  • Sweet Jesus, but you haven't lived until you've seen the Lawrence Welk rendition of this song. When my parents were objecting to this playing on my transistor radio, little did I know that Grandma was grooving out to the same tune!

  • This one and uncle Johns Band.,We're not worthy

  • Who said burnt offerings are old testament?

  • This song was considered a gospel song back in the day. I guess they didn't know that one toke is about pot! Check out other performers covering this song its hilarious

  • These guys have got it down for sure! I was into these guys in High School when this tune was new.

  • One toke over the line sweet Jesus!!
