I'm not certain of the actual helmet used by the stig, but an ARAI GP-5 is almost identical, and costs around $1600, US. there are cheaper option also, like the GP-5W or the GP-5K, which are around $1000. If you are really strapped for cash, you can opt for a motorbike helmet, which will only be in the small hundreds, mainly because they are not fire resistant. look around at the different brands.

Police wouldnt have that knowledge anyway but if you go to court over an incident that may have been your fault that could be brought up to your disadvantage. And if its illegal it may be because it hasnt been proven safe so if u crash it could be fatal. Theres a lot u have to consider its most certainly a car helmet. Or i may just be being a buzz kill :P
