There's no brown water academy to teach people how to run towboats.You don't just get hired & start running a boat w/o knowing a thing about the river.You deck for at least 4 years,learn on the job from a pilot if he likes you and then,go to the Coast Guard to get your license.That's the up through the hawsepipe method of advancement.
@dirk275 I was finaly after all of these years able to catch her up in Duluth MN. around 11pm. She was docked & waiting out the weather! She set sail for Two Harbors the next morning. I caught her on video while she was docking to load there! I've got that posted on my channel. It was in late Sept. 2010.
I had a good time as a Relief Third Mate on the Arthur M in Fall of 06'. Lots of work as compared to deep sea- in and out every 14-20 hours and only 8-12 hours for loading/unloading cargo. I mean 'At sea' or 'underway' between ports in as little as 14-20 hours. You will enjoy the lifestyle of academy life. Every academy is a bit different as I attended California Maritime Academy.
actually she wasnt the sister ship of the Fitz, She was the ship that followed the fitz the night she sank. The Arthur B Homer is the Fitzgeralds sister ship, it since has been scrapped

I've actually been on this ship when it was in Green Bya. I had no idea of it's history until much later.

Amazing! It's been such a long time since I've seen the Anderson. I believe it was the Summer of 1978 at Fairport Harbor OH. She still looks good!
