We used to do this for fun at our local electric railway line.We would throw a projectile with copper wire attached over the 25kV lines

Is the battery flat? Don't know about the wool, i assumed it was all the same.

yeah i got it to work today, the battery isnt too flat i dont think. i tied the wool on my bicycle wheel

@mattcadders I've had the same problem, but I've had success in the past. The stuff that burns seems to have a blue tint.

@XTIRP8 the thinner the better and when it starts to burn blow really hard on it then put something like a tissue or something flammable

I did the same thing by accident in high school electronics class about 10 years ago when I threw what I thought was a dead 9V battery into a bin of steel wool (which I thought was just a normal bin). Suffice to say the class loved the resulting fire but the teacher did not.

a 6-volt battery should work even better because of the higher current reserve.

only problem with 6 volts is there may not be enough voltage to get it hot enough...

this is how i start fires when i go camping. one time after i got the fire going, i put the exta steel wool in my pocket with the 9v batery and my pants caught on fire. lol, it was kinda funny, but it hurt

Another trick is if you go camping take some wire wool and when you want to make a nice camp fire you can..and it don't matter if the wire wool gets wet just shake off the water and away you go.But don't forget the 9 volt battery though....

nope, any fine wire should reproduce the same effect with the correct voltage.

the 9v batery only works w/ the steel wool to start the fire, but cotten balls will catch on fire easy once you got the steel wool burnning
