i remember reading ''Ashes of Eden'' as a kid and liked it way better than any of the uninspired TNG movies. ''the return'' easily beats First contact if you ask me. (Borg dogs included :P)
i think Shatner had the right idea dont focus on one show anymore combine them. perhaps people dont know this but 'the return' was originally a movie script.
I'll be honest "Academy" was not that good. BUT, The 9-part Return of Kirk saga that Shatner wrote from 1995-2006 starting with "Ashes of Eden" and ending with "Captain's Glory", are THE BEST STAR TREK books ever written. I will even go farther by saying those 9 books are amongst the best sci-fi ever written as well. You want to enjoy Star Trek READ THOSE BOOKS. Go get Ashes of Eden and go from there. you won't be dissappointed.
As a writer, I can certainly relate to Shatner's description of the difference between books and movies. The film experience is limited by what you can see and hear. The book experience is unlimited by your imagination.

One of the best, if not THE best "theatre of the mind" tv shows, were the old Twighlight Zone episodes, written and produced by Rod Serling.

Shatner is a very talented chap and his books are extremely well written. If only they could re-write Star Trek V!

You know what? I am doing just that. Started on Ashes right now. Has put the new movie in the shade already and has a nice reference to Trek VI.
