Ito was by far, the best skater at the time... she remains a legendary figure in ice skating, and was the scoring system was simply not capable of handling her technical ability. It was heartbreaking to see such a wonderful person collapse under the pressure that was put on her at these games. The fact that she still landing a triple axle in the long program was wonderful.
It's called "shadowing" or skating too close to other skaters to shake them up. Both Surya and Sasha Cohen were notorious for doing that to other skaters!
@twilliger123 I call it thuggery -- which is overlooked by those who groundlessly idolize such as Sasha "Thug" Cohen, despite her lack of ethics, and her obvious bad sportsmanship. Such idolators are to be avoided in real life for obvious reasons: they believe dishonesty and cheating is acceptable.
@ecuasian19 The back flip is an illegal jump and there was no reason for her to do it in practice. You also have to remember this part of the oath that is sworn at the opening ceremonies at the Olympics: Olympic athletes are supposed to be role models to everyone. Here, Surya is showing that the only way she thinks she can win is by being disrespectful towards her opponents. I guess this says a lot about her self-confidence and her sportsmanship...
@HatakeMegumi Surya Bonaly did land her backflip on one foot so she was probably wanting to challenge the legality of the rule. She may have been trying to psych out Midori Ito but I also think she did back flips as a way to relax and warm up. Which seems unlikely but I think it's at least partially true. I don't think she was 100% trying to be disrespectful.
@HatakeMegumi I never said that she had class and sportsmanship. My opinion is my opinion and I just stated that it is her warm up and she has the right to do as she wishes. And obviously, I know the back flip is illegal in amateur competition.
@ecuasian19 Criminals would agree with you, but that's not how responsible reasoning works: in law, "assault" is defined as, putting another in fear of physical harm. Also in law, pointing an UNLOADED gun at another is defined as assault with a deadly weapon: it is not the responsibility of the person at whom the gun is pointed to ASSUME the gun ISN'T loaded.
In short: you bear responsibiliy for your actions, and their impact on others.

Surya can do whatever she wants in her warm-up! Even if Midori was "shaken" up by seeing the back-flip, that is no fault of Surya!

And btw I'm a huge fan of Midori Ito.

@ecuasian19 - Doing that backflip is just a complete lack of class on Surya Bonaly's part ...but that's nothing new.
