brilliantly written characters and amazing casting for the bad guys. Simmerson, Hakeswell and Ducot. all absolute bastards, and you all wish for their demise.
I rather like seeing Sharpe playing the common soldier for a bit. It's a nice change of pace. And they talk so much about how he was raised from the ranks, so it's a good chance to see what he's like back down in the ranks.
It would be incredibly hard to look at all serious while wearing one of those caps.
And Simmerson keeps getting worse and worse every time he turns up- or maybe it's jsut that we're seeing more of him. High time he kicked the bucket, preferably at the end of Sharpe's sword.
I would be too paranoid to go downtown and get drink in those days, in case some recruiting officer came in and slipped a king's shilling in your drink.
agreed. he should have chosen Anne, the classy whore with the heart of gold! Jane was damgaged goods, there was no saving her after her life with simmerson.
Actually, the shaokoe is a great improvement over its predecessor, the three cornered har. Made of heavyily axed canvas, it keeps it shape in wet, keeps out rain, and offers some protection against cavalry sword cuts. - the height helps slow down any cavaly sabre cut. US infantry of the same period also wore it - when they could get it!
you are essentially 1/2 correct. Shakoes were indeed meant to make the soldier look good (i.e tall). but the british model (a belgic shako) was not impractical. sukneh's comment completes it from here.
It was after Sharpe captured the French Eagle at Talavera. Jane's brother (a soldier), tried to take it from Sharpe, presumeably to take the glory, and tried to kill him. Sharpe won, and met Jane when he went back to England to tell her the news. He made up some bollocks about him being heroic.
I haven't read the actual book, but this is mentioned in other books.
@jbullesquire lol My first thought when I saw him. Can you imagine men maintaining themselves like this? Some wore a net over their mustaches at night. Like Poirot. I'd like to know what they were called. Anyone? Imagine a man fixing himself up like this before going out. Wow. I wonder what kind of grease they used? Men used Brylcreem when I was growing up. Elivs types especially. It has beeswax in it. / I appreciate the person who styled this actor's hair. It's a piece of art. :) Songs
It's strange to see recruitment techniques haven't changed much. Too bad they didn't have television then, they could have recruited a dozen regiments!
yeah, what a bitch huh? Sharp never seemed to learn a lesson throughout his many affairs - never left your woman alone for too long. Can't blame the man though, he loved soldiering too much...
Ah, Vaughn appears again.
