In 1968 I was a big fan of old Charlie Chan movies, which were often shown on TV at that time, which made this commercial meaningful to TV watchers then.
I did wonder what an "automatic stickshift" was, though.
In 1971 my dad got a Super Beetle with this transmission, however, which I ended up driving till it was destroyed in an accident in 1978. You did take your foot off the gas to shift, which was only necessary at higher speeds and not "in town", as this ad says.
I also have an autostick beetle. a 1968 model 1500 engine with front disc brakes and IRS rear suspension all standard. ALL Autosticks were made in Germany.
I am really pleased with the performance of My beetle. It has a weber carburetor , extractor exhaust system and a new SVDA bosch distributor. The engine is now a 1600... If I take off at traffic lights in Drive 1, I can usually beat most cars up to 50 KMH which is the speed limit.. You can take off in Low Drive 1 or 2
I have a classic auto beetle. It has just 81k original mikes & has been rebuilt by Always V-Dub in Portland. I have owned many standard vws but never appreciated the AT vw until I drove this restored one. Surprisingly it has lots of zip. A relaxing pleasure to drive. Just turn the key then sit back & steer. Its fun to cruise a classic w/o shifting. The ride is smooth and it gets great mpg. I bought it because the owner can no longer drive. I was going to resell but may just keep it forever.
Marvin Miller had a long career as a radio/TV announcer/narrator, character actor, and his famous role as "Michael Anthony" on "THE MILLIONAIRE" {"...until the day he died, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multi-billionaire. Among my duties was the unique job of giving away, tax-free, the anonymous gift of one million dollars...to a total stranger"}. He previously played a "Chinese detective" in an obscure live ABC crime drama, "MYSTERIES OF CHINATOWN", in 1949!
i have a 1302 with automatic stickshift, it is awesome to drive, there is a "L"(low) gear on it, for steep hills, This gearbox works with hydro pneumatics.
its a shame that many of these beetles, being converted into normal stick shift, because an autostick beetle has a stronger chassis
I have a standard and my dad has an auto stick. It's weird to drive, you can give it gas as soon as you left off the break and the shifter or the engine goes clunk.
