@SirRediazVh both judo, for a few years, but both are now doing some other training, the big guy I saw occasionally at BJJ, but he was a collegiate wrestler years ago.
The smaller person training base a judo green belt, but he's also done some MMA, likes karate & is high grade.
at 3:38 thats the perfect example of why judo is a top martial art that was just a beautiful tomoe nage...just goes to show BJJ and judo are very very similar to each other BJJ came from judo so dont think if u do BJJ u will have an easy time fighting a good judoka caz u'll be wrong
@justdaA I don't believe that's always the case. In Competitions or contests, it's common for two opponents to wear opposite colour belts. It helps differentiate between the two. Occassionally it might actually represent their actual rank but I presume most grappling comps would have two different colour belts to help know who is who.
@justdaA dont be stupid they are no white bjj white belts they are all experienced just wearing belts to distiguish colour on wos judo guy and wos bjj
That's why in a straight submission match if ya really want to frustrate a Judo guy just pull guard or sit on the mat. Make them come in or scoot around the mat on yer ass and watch them back up.
B.T.W I cross train in both BJJ and Judo. They both have their strengths, but most BJJ guys focus on wrestling for their standup.
@AmericanFenian When I used to "wrestle" my little brother he would run and hit the ground so he wouldn't get hurt. Same as"b"JJ. Instead of getting hurt (or losing) by a throw one just falls down first and waits for someone to come hurling into their guard. Tell me, what is honorable or what is the point of taking an art like Judo and removing an entire half of it? No person who ONLY practices newaza can ever be as affective as one who does both in a situation that allows both. My 2 cents :)
I'll ask them on Tueday who was teaching at the time. The guys I know are in their late 30s and early 40s. I wrestled since I was a kid, started Jiu Jitsu, and then decided to take Judo while taking Jiu Jitsu to get more roll time as well as work on the sweeping and throws.
I am aware of how much better Judokas are in Asia and Europe. I'm actually studying to test in Judo.
What association are ya from? We know where BJJ came from in mine. As someone who also does both, I know most Judo instructors don’t teach hardly any ground work. Judo doesn't allow for enough ground play. I'm not saying let it turn into a Jiu Jitsu match, but don't be so quick to stop a match while viable submission are being worked.
@AmericanFenian I train at Indiana University Bloomington. How do you know what most Judo instructors teach? You going around the world and checking them all out? At IU Judo we do 50% ne waza and 50% nage waza.
I do "b"JJ on the days that Judo is not offered so i can work on my J-U-D-O NE WAZA.
Well they must have really changed the program in IU in Bloomington, IN. I know people who were members of the Judo club (my training partner in BJJ). I travel all over the US and will be in Brasil and Europe (Lisbon) next year for Jiu Jitsu tournaments. So I do see quite a few Judo players at BJJ tournaments
@AmericanFenian They probably did so at IU (change the program) in order to deal with the popularity of "BJJ". Which, I think is going to start happening everywhere if it already hasn't
Thank you, I like seeing Judo guys in BJJ tournaments. When people cry about being beat by a Judoka, I ask why haven't ya been working on standup? It's a good lesson and in Judo classes, the has me work with people on the ground. The teacher in Judo also helps me modify Judo and Jiu Jitsu techniques. Life in martial arts is a journey and too many people get caught up in chasing belts.
Its getting a bit tiring now.Of course BJJ players have a better chance of beating a judo player in submission grappling. But when it comes to the street i would put my money on the judo players having an advantage.I am a judo player who trains from time to time in BJJ and 9 out of ten 10 times while grappling i end up on top.I may end up tapping to some slick submission move but if it had been on concrete with no rules i would have won most before they had a chance of that slick move.
@steeeeker hmm people also seem to forgot most martial arts nowaday have oriental move in it and came from an oriental martial arts such as bjj came from judo...so did sambo came from judo
Is this kind of friendly competition a common thing in New Zealand? I've never heard or seen anything similar in the UK. It looks like a great opportunity to have some fun while sharing some skills.
Great stuff. I forget how challenging it is to roll with some judo guys. In bjj we often admire Judoka's standup grappling, but their ne-waza is formidable.
i hate how bjj guys put people in their guard! it does nothing and your on your back judokas are best on top your just playing against their strengths
Around the 2:15 mark of this video he is judo right because he is submitting alot people in this video and he used a couple judo moves. I just wanted to know also it seems like the judokas are in blue and bjj are in white.
@chchjudoschool hey i have a question that i hope you answer ive been doing bjj for 2 years now and always wnated to do judo is there alot of submissions in judo?
depends on the dojo how much emphasis they place on the importance of the ground game. Most judo clubs spend at least 30-40% of time on the ground game.
Standing game requires significant drilling to gain expertise compared to ground, and as we commence standing that is the major emphasis in most dojo.
So answer is "it depends"
Even within our club my brother doesnt like newaza, so just usually stands up as quick as possible in cub randori -free movement ground or standing fights
@Itachijutsu Kosen Judo has a lot more ground work, arguably like Bjj. BJJ is based off of Judo, so really a lot of the same techinques on the ground in the beginning.
Yeah I could tell the black belt in this video was trying to take it easy on the white belt. Lol but that white belt was really asking for a sacrifice throw.
judo ne waza = bjj
