I don't know what is vegemite but my mom cooked sth looking almost similar to what you have done. But she used grape molasses and honey and hashish also dried grapes. :D They were super delicious too, i totally recommend it.
Vegemite has never been banned in the US. That is an urban legend. It is an acquired taste that has simply never gained popularity here. Difficult for Aussies who have been raised on the stuff to believe I know, but its true. Vegemite is a good source of B Vitamins,
Us Yanks have been raised on peanut butter, which (if you are not allergic, and you buy the good stuff) is actually good for you containing Protein, Vegetable Fat, B & E Vitamins, Dietary Fiber and the anti-oxidant: p-coumaric acid.
@fauxflowerrr it's kinda savoury and salty but you don't spread it thick on stuff or else it tastes disgusting and have with butter or margarine if you want it on toast
I have some of your videos on my insta-que and im in Ameria so i was looking to add more and when i seen these i thought they were cinnamon rolls. Haha but great channel like to see your videos and blog too. You should make cinnamon rolls the are fantastic.
I was confused and glad to see your comment akerswizard. I know they have it in the States at World Market next to the...ahem....Marmite. But now perhaps I understand why the natural food stores only sell the Marmite. That stuff makes the best vegetarian gravy I've ever eaten.
whats the deal w/aussies thinking peanut butter is discusting, like eating lard. Its not its good, but not to be eaten all the time. Its a kids sand pb&j.
oh thats grose! You eat it by itself!!!! Far out I love vegemite scrolls but...eating it by the spoonful!? Thats like spooning sardine past in your mouth!
@housemonzter No, it does not taste anything like peanut butter, it tastes like shit. It looks like diarrhea, and it just sucks. Peanut butter is delicious, this is not.
@housemonzter not at all, vegemite is made from yeast extract. If you live in other commonwealth countries you will recognise 'marmite' as an alternative very similar to vegemite. If you live in the US it is not popular but can be found in supermarkets that stock overseas food :)
Vegemite is used sparingly as it is very high in sodium. Commonly eaten on crackers/biscuits or on toast/bread with toppings such as cheese, tomato or butter. It is a very acquired taste so you have to give it time :)
this may sound terrible but i've done this with vegemite, cheese and peanut butter. absolutely brilliant taste sensation! :P thx for sharing this recipe.
the look like cinnimon buns which are lovely i live in canada so i don't think we have vegemite here but i think those would be good with some raspberry jam in the middle and maybe a cream cheese icing =D!
what is the difference between marmite and vegemite? apart from the fact that marmite is from nz and vegemite is from aus. i eat marmite cuz they are cheaper in nz but in terms of taste??
After Googling it, I discovered that Vegemite was never banned in the US. Kraft chose not to ship it to US retailers (until the folate thing was taken care of) , which isn't a ban. And people are free to have it shipped, or to bring it in to the US themselves. Also, Vegemite isn't terribly popular here, so it would be more difficult to find. Maybe US residents could try stores (shops) that are known to have a good selection of ethnic foods.

Just a little tip for people here in North America, the banning of Vegemite is a complete rumor, it never happened, you can still buy it although its not the most popular thing and as a result hard to find. The store near me here in Canada has Marmite which I find tastes almost the same and works just fantastic with this dish here.

And yum, that looks pretty good, and the cheese adds to the taste. I'm gonna go ahead and cook it. Thanks, Nico!
