  • "Coin detected in pocket"

  • Wow, that robotic voice is creepy.

  • Each shot he deflects, each human he kills, each robot he destroys by bumping into them0, and each electrified wall he goes through is equal to a fuck Evil Otto doesn't give. And from the number of games of Berzerk that have been played since its introduction over 30 years ago, that's a lot of ungiven fucks.

  • i looked this game up cause i never heard of it , and am looking at strange deaths . Man dies achieving highscore in this game , year later same thing happens . creeeepy.

  • This game has a curse. In 81' and 82' two young people died while setting high scores for this game. Heart attacks in both separate cases

  • @Yepprd "Curse"? Bunkum and rot. Coincidence.

  • 0:39 Aww, we only got to see Otto for a few seconds.

  • I often find it surprising that a lot of arcade games in the early 80's were capable of such enhanced sound and graphics that home consoles probably wouldn't be able to handle until the late 90's.

  • Pinball Jacks Lives!

  • I remember spending many hours playing this game, or watching others play it, in the arcade in the summer. The voices are still awesome.

  • This game actully killed people

  • I remember being scared to play this game as a kid, and being scared absolutely shitless of Frenzy and Sinistar.

  • I used to watch older kids like my brother play this game in the arcade. I was only 9 and a little too scared to play it myself lol. I did play versions like it on the Vic 20 though like Amok and Shamus.

  • I can almost smell the stale cigarette smoke of the candy store in Brooklyn where I used to play this. Has it really been 30 years? Ouch.

  • If there is ever one game that I must play before I die, It's this one.

  • this one and pitfall was the first third person video games

  • Thanks for posting this. I LOVED this game!!!!!!

  • 0:39 Behold, the world's scariest emote!

  • Oh pardon me, it's not a Votrax, but a GI S14001A.

  • Did they ever get the Votrax emulation working?

  • @douro20 um It's Called Vextrex! Classic Game Room's Mark Had A review On It! :D

  • "Coin detected in pocket"...

  • This was completely AWESOME to see again after more than 20 years! Thanks for posting. I want to find a program/emulator for this game so I can run it on my PC.

  • @aliwash1 Do not do only this Build a DIY ARCADE MACHINE full of many of these Clássic games

  • Stop the humanoid...stop the intruder...

  • The smiley face scares the shit outta me!

  • Heavy Weapons Guy?

  • So THOSE are the voices they were referencing in the Futurama episode, "Fear of a Bot Planet."

  • @Notyu1459 Yup. I didn't get the reference on Futurama until I heard of the game :-D

  • @Notyu1459 Haha yep, if you listen to the commantary they explain it. Same as in Raiders of the Lost Arcade (Antholgy of intrest II)

  • @Notyu1459 And "Anthology of Interest II"

  • I LOL'D AT EVIL OTTO XD

  • Dude....You suck.

  • Classic.

  • This is a cool game for it's time..

It looks more like a arcade game that would have been played on the TOS Battlestar Galatica. LOL.

  • 54 Cymru Beats!!! This game is sampled in that song. Aphex Twin is awesome!!!

  • I wish I could get my computer to talk like that.

  • When I was little, I thought the line was "Chicken fight ! Lightning Robot!"

  • GOT THE HUMANOID GOT THE INTRUDER! One of the best soundbytes in videogame history!

  • @Zzyyxxyyxx Hell yea! At the time this game was made, because of ROM limitations, I read it cost something like $1,000 per word, to put sampled speech in video games. That's why in the early 80's, it was such a big deal when I game talked. I don't know if the speech in Berzerk is sampled or synthesized.

  • @gjc82071 its computer synthesized accoridimg to wikipedia

  • DIERON AL HUMANOIDE,DIERON AL INTRUSO(GOT THE HUMANOID,GOT THE INTRUDER)!!PONGA LA MONEDA AHORA(COINS DETECTED IN POCKET)!!

  • The chicken must not escape!

  • Today,Tuesday,October 12,2010,I broke my own record of 13880 and I made 15,680 in Berzerk set of 1(fast bullets)!!

  • Dear Hard Wire Gaming:I made 16880 in set of 2(Evil Otto goes faster than the Humanoid after 5,000)and I made 13,870 in Berzerk set of 1,where the robots shoot fast bullets)

  • I played Berzerk set of 2 and I made 16,880!!

  • loved seeing the bootup. Z80 CPU at 2.5 MHz....

  • Forget dismal Gears of War and it's greyness. I was an 80s teenager. Still am...

  • loved the "coin detected in pocket" chirp as you walked by!!!!

  • Those voiceovers are badass.

  • I will also said to the crackheads after their arrest for breaking and entering in both English and Spanish:He atrapado al humanoide,He atrapado al intruso(got the humanoid, got the intruder)

  • Objetivo(Target)!!Destruyan al Humanoide(Destroy the Humanoid)!!Destruyan al Intruso(Destroy the Intruder)!!Matenlo(Kill it)!!Jovencito,pelea como un Robot(Chicken,Fight Like a Robot)!!El Humanoide no debe escapar(Humanoid must not escape)!!Intruso Alerta,intruso Alerta(Intruder Alert,Intruder Alert)Atraparon al humanoide,atraparon al intruso(Got the humanoid got the intruder)!!Monedas detectads en los bolsillos(Coins detected in pocket)!!

  • Atraparon al humanoide, atraparon al intruso(Got the humanoid, got the intruder in Spanish)!!

  • I LOVE THE GAME "BERZERK" TO THE END BECAUSE OF THE VOICES AT THE ARCADE MACHINE,WOOOOOOOO!!

  • i only have the vectrex and atari 2600 versions of the game. i havent played the arcade game as all the arcades iv been to are shit and play crappy time crisis and house of dead all the while -_-

  • Everynight i have a nightmare where evil otto chases me (im kidding)

  • I was thinking thats Steven Hawking speaking ...

  • @ufousonlo

No You can't tell it's Darth Punk.. .. LOL. They went back in time 30 years in the past to make this cool game.. You can't tell it's both their voices.. LOL.

  • this game is so addictive!!! one of my favorite arcade games.

  • "Are we under their control,

Or are they under our control,

    Or what?"

  • The robots' voices are in Futurama.

  • "got that humanoid, got that intruder!"..i'm gonna say that the next time some crackheads try to break into my house.

  • @Rutgers Univ in mid 1980's there as EEE. He was undefatable. He would screen EEE #1, EEE #1. My freind and I would unplug the machine when he wasn't around to lose his hight score. We'd hear him scream later. Who unplug. Where EEE score, EEE #1. Sorry EEE

  • I've heard that at the time the voice synthesis for this cost $2000/word.

  • This game was awesome..I spent hundreds of quarters playing beserk as well as all the other games back then !! Im a oldster now but still love finding a game room.Has this ever been on a playstion " Greatest hits " ??

  • So much for the Asimov Laws of Robotics.

  • @NinjaGhostScorpion It's still being broken today with any game or movie with robot enemies/bosses, especially in the Unreal Tournament series where one of the robot characters' taunts is "First Law Violation." :D

  • For 1980, the robotic voices are very impressive. Also, the Atari 2600 game was a more faithful reproduction than I thought. Not that it looks great on Atari, but the arcade version just looks more like an atari game lol

  • I love the robots, walking into each other and one another's bullets, as well as self destructing on walls.

  • loved the audio as a kid!

  • Not quite Robotron is it ?

  • Attack of the Automated Darwin Awards!

Yon robots have a pentium defenciency. getting them to ace each other never got old.

I had this for the 2600.

  • it took me forever but I finally found out what the robots were saying

    The humans are dead

    The humans are dead

    We used poisonous gases

    And we poisoned their asses

Come on sucker, lick my battery!

  • Prodably one of the best games for Mame and Atari 2600 =)

  • actually frenzy came about cuz the had left over hardware so they made another game and thuz frenzy was born

  • Dang, having seen this I find the atari 2600 version more pleasing. Or maybe it's just because I grew up on that game and any variation seems lame in my eyes :-? long live the atari!

  • The granddaddy of all first-person shooters.

  • That synth voice I'm hearing sounds like something in the Aphex Twin song "54 Cymru Beats". It's got a voice just like that.

  • @ExterminatorElite

Yeah, this is where he sampled it from. great song too...

  • Check out humanoid must not escape by Aphex, a bit more related :)

  • Chicken! Fight like a robot!

  • I was born in 1990, and I grew up playing really old games. Berzerk is one of my old favorites. I remember an arcade machine near a bread shop I used to go to when I was little with my mom had Berzerk. I was pretty bad at the game, but I loved it. I love old-school gameplay. And the synth voice is just awesome.

  • Hey, can you help me remember the game? It gameplay is very similar to Berzerk, but main hero looks like one from boulder dash and it also has more types of enemies

  • I think you are referring to Frenzy, a "sequel" to Berzerk.

  • A lot harder in the arcade than on the Atari.

  • where did you download this rom

when i have one to but it does nt have sound

  • If you get the latest version of MAME, the new rom has got sound in it.

Older versions needed a sample zip that you would put in the "samples" folder.

  • i once put ASS on this machine then i spent another quarter so i could put SEX

    lol

  • roflbombproductions: But didn't everyone do that at one point?

  • i guess so but thats the first thing that that comes to mind when i see a berzerk machine or the game

i just couldnt help it :/

  • @HardWiredGaming Yep :)

  • Ah, the classic "dirty word high score" maneuver. I used to do that on a Ms. Pac-Man machine back in the fairly short period between my first use of those words and the local arcade closing.

  • @roflbombproductions AND WTF!

  • @roflbombproductions you should've put LOS than ER

    ha ha just joking

  • @roflbombproductions Hey, let me play your last man!

  • @roflbombproductions A girl I knew played till it said Fuk My Ass

  • The best is the vectrex version

  • I never knew Berzerk was for the arcade.

This looks like an HD atari 2600 game to me....

  • Lol...I remember this game. I was just browsing.

  • Despite the fact that this game is awesome on arcade. The Atari 2600 version is awesome too!

  • This brings back memories. My brother and I used to shovel quarters into the game and always made high scores. This was back in the 80's. It started with a control that was really big, and made it easy to manuever your man. When too many folks were getting tense during play, and bending it way down thinking it would move the man faster. It broke the contact points and would have to be repaired. They came up with a smaller stick, but it had less control to it. It took a while to get used to it.

  • @Johnfern99 I remember that, too!!! LOL

  • tell you the truth this game was one of the most addicting games on the atari ive ever played and owned

  • Never had the pleasure of playing this game before...but it's interesting to see that the enemies can die from friendly fire. You get points for it too!

  • I sometimes play this game on MAME too. It's great fun. =)

  • Should have entered FUK as your initials. Tsk.

  • stevepuke69: I've always preferred to put my mark on a machine to know that none shall best me.

    Or ASS. That's funny, too.

  • SEX is usually the name I put.

  • Comment removed

  • I see that the robots could make diagonal shots unlike the Atari 2600 version

  • I haven't seen this game in years. I could never for the life of me remember the name of this game until now. Thanks for the memories. Super Smash T.V got there ideal from this game I see.

  • howincrediblyshit: And you wasted time and bandwidth to make that comment. How incredibly stupid.

  • Ok, I have to say, this is, overall, the coolest game ever.

even the Atari version kicks ass.

  • I don't like the thought of a smiley face being in charge of legions of killer robots. It smacks of evil.

  • i agree with drtoonie

two ppl died and evil otto watched them die it wasquiet weird actually cause i was there when they wer both having a heart attack.

  • No foolin'?

  • coin detected in pocket

  • kick ass man. used to play the 5300 version, but this one is faster and more robot talking

    ;-)

  • CHICKEN FIGHT LIKE A ROBOT

  • Berzerk rules.

  • Frenzy!!!!!!!!

  • i herd that somebody had a heart attack or seizure playing this game...

  • the guy got a seizure while playing. that's because the person was photo sensitive. When they killed him in the game, the flashes and light probably gave him involuntary convulsions. I may not be a doctor, or know who the person is, but im pretty sure thats what happend

  • Probably. Actually there were two recorded incidents of people under the age of 25 dying of heart attacks immediately after posting high scores. Evil Otto watched them die...

  • ...and with a smile on his face.

  • Hm. I didn't hear "Chicken fight like a robot." It's my favorite line. Also used in Vectorman 2.

  • The sound quality is a lot better than Wizard Of Wor that's fer darn sure.

  • Love the 2600 version, used to play it all the time. Probably my favorite 2600 game. I'd like to play this one, as well.

  • i like berzerk too
