  • q buena peli!!!!

  • Best version of the song I've ever heard

  • I could watch this film over and over again, for the swashbuckling love hate relationship between John Wayne and Lee Marvin, and for all of those beautiful dancers, and finally for Burl Ives "Pearly Shells" brilliant!

  • Gilhooley!!!!

  • I KLOVE this version of this great song. Was it ever recorded? NO ONE does it like the people who recorded this version!!!! Any info on it is most welcome!!

  • hi...is there any where i can get this by next tuesday on the net my dad was a big donovans reef fan i would like to play this version at his funeral...regards.

  • RIP John Wayne June 11th 1979

  • This has always been one of my favorite Ford pictures. It's always been underrated and kind of ignored by most critics and some Ford aficiandos. I think it's a melancholy, beautiful film. Love the music, especially.

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE this movie and one of my all time favorites!! I was a little girl LIVING in Hawaii when this was being shown on TV like 3 times a year after it was done with all the releases.... so I actually shed tears whenever I hear this version of Pearly Shells here....All my best memories from Hawaii are wrapped up in this movie along with my dear departed father! Aloha Nui Loa! SWAK Melody Dawn

  • @mdt2281 Much Aloha to you dear lady, Something about this version of the song, really pulls at the heartstrings. Mahalo.

  • My Dad and I loved to watch this movie together.

  • Thanks for this post! I've been searching (off and on) for the soundtrack to Donovan's Reef since the 60's. And I watch it every time it comes on TCM! This version of Pearly Shells is the only one I care for.........all others are spoiled because they don't remind me of D's Reef.

  • Enjoyed this movie back in '63 - then had the privilege of serving with the USAF at Hickam AFB 1967-1971. The Air Force had to pry me off that island.

  • one of the great movies of all times! so funny for john wayne! he only did a few comedy movies! lee marvin was great in this too! love this song! how great to have been in movie even if you just waved, you did it well! love the everyday and fancy dresses! my father served in the south pacific in WWII he always laughed and laughed especially at the barroom fight scene where the australians made one of their guys turn his cap around told him he was now a yank and made him fight on the other side!

  • This version of this song always makes me happy, it is the thing I remember the most from this movie. Thanks for posting. Everybody sing along! :) Püpü (a`o `Ewa) i ka nu`a (nä känaka) E naue mai (a e `ike) I ka mea hou (o ka `äina) Ahe `äina (ua kaulana) Mai nä küpuna mai Alahula Pu`uloa he ala hele no Ka`ahupahau, (Ka`ahupähau) Alahula Pu`uloa he ala hele no Ka`ahupähau, Ka`ahupähau

  • Wish we could help - maybe the Island Gods will hear.

  • @flakeater

You can get the DVD on Amazon or Ebay. I got acopy 2 years ago for £2 inc postage!

  • AngelsAte....I thought I was the only person to do that as a kid.

  • There were several movies from this general period that had music important enough to me that I hard wired a tape recorder to the audio terminals of the speaker in our tv and recorded it. This single file hits most of the musical high spots for me from Donovan's Reef. Many thanks. I always get tears in my eyes too.

  • This one is from a time when actors could actually act....what a colorful scene and beautiful singing, thanks to the Hawaiian ladies...thanks for posting*****

  • You're danged right about the acting! This is one of the best movies ever made, along with several other John Wayne / John Ford pictures. I'd love to go to the movies nowadays, but they ain't worth it. Cheers!

  • love this song, the movie was great also -- Wayne,

Marvin, Romero, Warden, LaMour, how could they go wrong?

  • a sailor's heaven, Hawaii

  • Like many before me who have posted on this and another "opening credit" video, this is one of the most under-rated comedy by a solid cast. Thanks also to C&H sugar. C&H being California and Hawaii.

    Great memories and cinematography.

  • Gilhuli!!!

  • another great track from the movie can be found on itunes "waipo" by New Hawaiian Band sounds unchanged. Music from when the monument is discovered after cutting the christmas tree.

    Other songs in the movie:

    Song of Old Hawaii

    Harbor Lights

  • I agree Grandma...I recorded the music on my reel to reel tape recorder years ago (1960s)...the muisc always brought tears to my eyes.

    thanks for posting!

  • I was in this movie. I am third from the right in front row waving on the beach. Back in 1963 were paid 12 bucks for the whole day. The following year I married a British sailor who was serving on the Royal Yacht Britannia. Been living in England for over 45 years now. Of course i look a teeny weeny bit older now but can still wave like a professional if hollywood needs me.

  • Delightful!! John Ford's producers stole a lot of hearts with the 12 dollars used to steal you. Let everyone focus, describe the pareo (sarong) you are wearing (in the movie..ha ha)?

  • The happiest I have ever been is when I was in Hawaii. My only sadness is I didn't have the angelic music of this movie to listen to when I was there.

  • Fantastic, what was it like to be part of what is now regarded by many as fantistic film, the music stills sends shivers down the spine.

  • @doodahdayy You have no idea how please I am to read that one of the cast is living here in the UK!! FAAABulous!!! :D LOVE the film.

  • @doodahdayy yEAH, i THOUGTH i SAW YOU IN lONDON ONE DAY.

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!! I saw Donavan's Reef with my father when I was just a young girl, and this brings back so many memories. I have never forgotten this amazing music after all these years....It is so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes.

  • Thanks so much. You are not alone in this feeling for in researching this we found numerous pleas for information on this recording. Though the song has been twisted in many forms and versions, this recording and here restored to the most complete and fidelic version known to exist (with great thanks to departed Hollywood pioneer and friend Linwood Dunn), strikes an internal tuning fork in many. Tuned in unison...all are we. Let's see how many tune in and find what they seek.
