As far as my comprehension to Jian,it was made light and thin to facilitate the user's agility and flexibility. Thus, clashing would mean disadvantage for them. This kind of sword were made to counter the opponent's move...
otherwise it is only two unskilled swordsmen with fake swords that are attempting the unknowledged and the unknown. at the school i teach, we spar with functional sharps, and it is skilled enough that no one gets hurt. if you want to represent swordplay then work swordplay not play with swords.
@gregbreinholt apologies for misunderstanding your title. regarding your last statement... kevlar cloth is terrific stuff. i wouldnt advise such a way of traing w/o instructor. if you are interested in major improvement... i can get links to training vids for you.
No insecurities dude... just a simple statement that the one wielding the bastard sword has a little idea of use while the one wielding the jian has no idea of any swords use. as i said retape it with the jian artist with equal skill level.
the dude with the jian has no idea of the proper use...try retaping that with someone who knows chinese arts and then post it or dont bother trying that fraud of vids.
Calm down, take a deep breath, and think before you type.
The video is NOT saying that one style or sword is better than another. Please don't project your own insecurities onto everything you see; this is not a critic of Chinese styles (or European styles for that matter).
The video is for the fighters to reflect on where they need to improve. Sparring seldom looks like a choreographed demonstration of good technique.
i also didnt realize that you are using "bauffers" i thought they where wooden swords. well let me know if you are ever in socal this summer, cuz like i said im not going to be there long... it would be fun. and as far as debating let me know if you want to .. im open to criticism if you are
its fine i havnt got much to prove to anyone which is why i dont respond to any of the comments on the video haha.point taken, but do you think you can post some videos of the tournament you just went to, or some where you are using the full
capacity of the bastard sword so that we could get the feel of something like that.
its fine i havnt got much to prove to anyone which is why i dont respond to any of the comments on the video haha.
in fact if you want to spar sometime, im headed back to the usa next month... going to the soCAL area, if you want to duel let me know it could be fun....but i do understand if you decline do to our constant FLAMMING of eachother. haha
because if you are a trained kendo fighter, then i dont understand how you can lose face once someone waves something around your face. that video on my page in the garden was made 3 years ago, and if that speed and precision from that video in the "garden" wat put against your films speed and precision.. i do think that i would win.
this "international" thing doesnt really apply to anyone.. i mean im training in sweden right now, from the usa. so why would location have anything to do with it
You might want to actually learn how to use the weapons before you pit them against each other. No technique (or skill) at all. Oh, and twirling the sword in your hand...there's no practical application except loosening up the wrist -you might also notice it's not a good idea to do during the fight(as every time you did it you were hit). Please, never pick up a real sword.
you should not use european ways to use Chinese sword.

If you are going to compare two swords that are of the same length and the blade is straight it's pointless.
Standard european swords and Chinese swords are more or less the same.
If you are going to compare weapons of this era then it should be an axe or a mace!
Dimitri0809 2 years ago
These videos are not a comparison of the sword type, but of the skill of the user.
But I do like your mace suggestion :-)

With functional sharps, it is only a matter of time until someone does get hurt.
I assume you do at least wear some form of protection?

As I said before... the video is so that the combatants can LEARN (and as the Bastard sword wielder, I include myself in that statement).
How you think you move and fight...often looks very different than reality, and I'm not arrogant enough to ignore taped examples.
This video is almost 2 years old... and I expect I will still have lots to learn in another 2 years.
By using RSW weapons, which are at least weighted as real sword, provides a safer way for sword-play.

It would be fun... but don't expect to be in the US for a few months.
By International... I mean going to a World Championship event... rather than something local. Gives you a different perspective.
I was not meaning to dis you capability... but i get pissed-off of posters that like to think they own the world... without ever being in it.
If I'm ever passing through soCAL.. I will let you know.

Watch the film again....
Do you think I am attacking at full-speed... or just making sure my opponent does not hit me? (I have the bastard sword).
Look at when I strike? Notice that I do not always hit at full-power?
Knowing how to use a sword means you should use it appropriately against your opponent. You do not have to 'kill' every opponent.
We all make mistakes... and some of us post videos them so we can both learn from them.
