@FireCheepCheep I'm glad you asked, cause I looked him up. Turns out to be an actor I've seen many times before in several movies. Sadly, he passed away this year: Wayne Robson.
i would have beg Robin Williams to do a followup to this movie. If i had the pleasure of knowing him that is. Very good storyline with Popeye. ty 4 this post

I like Wimpy the Ref... "There ARE NO RULES..." Always an interesting touch how Bluto gets interested in the fight when he realizes Popeye is in the ring... when Oxheart is down for the count, Bluto returns to his Cabin lol. They don't make movies like this anymore
One of my favorites movies of all time!! The boxer is an actor named Peter Bray. I think he is passed on, never done any research on him. I was not aware it was about to become public domain, that is interesting. Little Linda Hunt was perfect as his Mudder!
ladies and gentlemen welcome to the main event!! Popeye vs. fat guy!!! Let's get ready to rumble!!!! fat guy throws the first punch but POPEYE is standing strong!!! and a shot to the head ladies and gentlemen that has got to leave a mark! and Popeye blocks his punches! and a punch to the stomach!!!! interference by fat boys mudda and a punch to the neck! what's this ?! Popeye is dancing in the ring!while he goes left and right missing the bad guys punches! then Popeye jumps!will he win?!
He's always had blond hair in the comics. Look at some old Thimble Theater strips from the 1920s, which is where they got this scene from. He was bald in the cartoons though.
@balthier1983 i completely agree. this is one of the most classic movies out there. i hope hollywood doesnt try to screw it up like they did with all the other classic cartoon movies.
I LOVE this film! I'm 34 years old and saw this in the theaters 27 years ago. It stands the test of time and continues to get better with each viewing. The costumes are fantastic, the casting is perfect, the script is cartoon-like (and written by Jules Feiffer who wrote an amazing film called Little Murders), directed by Robert Altman!!, has catchy musical numbers, incredible sets and does NOT date in the least! Popeye will always be a wonderful childhood memory and an under-rated classic!
When this movie was released, Popeye was 50 years old. Paramount Pictures and King Features Syndication done a great job on this movie. With help from Walt Disney and Hanna-Barbera.
I love how Popeye jumps into the ring and fights Oxblood Oxheart after Olive Oils brother Castor Oil is defeated and literally kicked right out of the ring, Popeye beats this bully up and does it in comedic fashion.
