I find it funny that the people slating Hip-Hop artists for sampling this are also inadvertantly addressing their discrepancies towards the likes of Miles Davis, who also sampled this. Sampling something *effectively* requires more creativity than people are prepared to give credit for. Just think of all of the things out there that could be sampled, and the number of ways you could arrange them into a composition, and it becomes clear that there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
@MrMajik2 The most sampled song of all time is probably Fab 5 Freddy feat. Beside - Change le Beat, the sound at the end was used a billion times by DJ's in the early 80's and 90's and it's still widely used. I think.
Sometimes I hate to come to these threads because there's stupidity on both sides of the arguments that often take place. You've got young idiots who reduce lengthy, classic tunes to "breaks" and you've got others who don't see any merit in hip-hop. As for me, I'm a 30-something musician who grew up on classic hip-hop...AND funk, and jazz-funk like this. A lot of contemporary hip has no originality, but I could say the same about virtual every form of COMMERCIAL music these days.
@MiamiPush2theLimit Respectfully, I beg to differ. The rappers took this great tune and took it to another level and made Bob James some more money. : D
@KingOfSchmucks im a huge old school hip hop fan, we all respect these older masterpieces, and it should be that you respect what hip hop has made of them
Tell you what though, having not listened to this in a few years, you can hear how well RunDMC used it, the parts they took. This is a classic, as is 'Peter Piper'.
@twinsinmindmusic Massive attack didn't sample this. Listen closely, it's a different bell. They got their beats from the song Parade Strut (instrumental) by J.J. Johnson for the soundtrack of Willie Dynamite (1974)
@MiamiPush2theLimit lol "rappers have no originality." the essence of early hip hop was the ability to sample songs and turn them into something new. sampling is even responsible for creating new styles of electronic based artists like animal collective. to turn 8 mins worth of elevator music into something else is original to me, imho.
@barkz01 oh thanks! it just upsets me when people dis the entire hip hop/rap genre based on the mainstream crap they're forcefed when there's so much more that meets the eye.
@MiamiPush2theLimit No music is original... Everything has been influenced by something else, whether it was white folk making black music popular or genres fuzing to make new ones. If you are going to discredit hip hop for using samples then you will have to discredit nearly every genre since hip hop's birth because you cannot produce music without samples in one form or another, unless you are solely dealing with live instruments. Do your research...
Funny. I was just listening to a Grandmaster Flash mixtape from 1979 and I heard Mel rocking over the Perter Piper beat and I said hold up - I did not know that beat was out before Run-DMC! I thought that the beat was simple enough for them to have made it up, but I guess I am really seeing why many artists did not sell well since it was already there. That brough me here. I always wanted to hear the original.
@chewxxxv: It is is. I had to listen to the whole shit. It is hard to believe it is jazz and from a white guy. He must have been listening to some James Brown when he came up with that! It does make me lose respect for a lot of hip-hop classics when I hear the origianls...
Actually, you're right but wrong. She sampled the Peter Piper/Run-DMC version. Notice the overdubbed stereo sound of it and the 808 drum beats in place of 'Take Me To The Mardi Gras's normal percussion with Jam-master Jays scratching..
The ending is just spectacular and epitomizes great music.
