At Italian construction sites they had large open lime pits. We played around them as kids but we were never told how dangerous those pits were. Holy Cow!
Hmmm there seems to be just too much perfection in modern replications of medieval architecture. Like all the technology takes away from the imperfections that the medieval buildings would have had.
Pretty grim stuff. One of my students had a summer job that wasn 't so great either. As a trained diver he had to dive into the settling ponds of the local sewage ponds, obviously filled with semi-decaying human waste. His task was to clear any blocked drainage pipes. Lovely...
working on building a church back then scored you great social status in that tiny village world! people would say, "oi, ye built that didnt ye!", and theyd buy you ale!! :)
@gudmundurjo It wasn't any different from the stupidity of today...Ignorance and stupidity are not synonymous, the difference between Dark Age man and modern man is fancier technology and systematic "education" of the modern youth. Believe it or not knowing how to work an ipod or computer does NOT mean we're smarter, just that we know our tech, they know theirs. As for us being "smart" now; being conditioned to remember things that other people created, like science doesn't mean WE'RE smart.
@CorpusChristi83 true, once upon a time ago, we could recite a 350,000 word poem word for word, because we didn't write anything down at one point. to us nowadays, it's hard to believe anyone could remember that much, let alone even think about being expected to lol
@shcnoozlebop Thats's very true. Writing is a perfect example of an extremely simple yet life altering inventions. Its really just started out as scratches in clay or sploches of ink lines on papyrus, yet it altered our ability for memorization. But being able to read or write doesnt make you smarter per se, just hthat you have that technology available for you.
Imagine roasting in the bloody kiln!
