Depending where you are, the moon casts a shadow over a portion of the earth during an eclipse.

An eclipse does not engulph the entire day-side of the earth in shadow....its like a shadow that moves across a large surface....only the people in the shadow think that the moon is perfectly blocking out the sun.

I have heard that the moon / earth relationship is a near-perfect match, against amazing odds....its almost miraculous that they balance like they do.

Type "why the moon doesn't spin" into google and it will explain that the moon does rotate and travel in orbit synchronously with the rotation of the earth due to tidal pull so that the same side always appears to us.
