Melrose Institute St. Louis Park as of now ONLY place in US that deals with both eating disorders and diabetes. Go there if you have diabulimia...other ED places don't get it. Some places won't even accept people with ED and diabetes
Drs do a great job of reassuring people that managing diabetes is like a machine - measure the right inputs, do the right processes, and you get a set output ie you eat X carbs, take Y amount of insulin, your BG will go to Z. The actual process is much more than that. It's about where you inject, temperature outside, stress, whether you had a good night's sleep before, colds/allergies etc. Blood sugar management has taken the body 3.6 billion years to perfect. Add a mental illness on top of that
Dr. Phil is such a fucking idiot. The woman just said she would sell her home to finace her daughters therephy, which 90% of the time doesn't work the first time around, but he's talking to her like she doesn't give a shit about her daughters life.
I hate how he keep calling eating disorders "trends" as if they are the new "cool thing" to do. Shows how little he actually knows. He's a fake doctor.
I think he talks in circles to make it sound like he knows what he's talking about. He makes everything sound like there's an easy cure, and there's not! If he want's to help them so badly, maybe he should pay the therapy costs for them! He seems to be cutting them down rather than respecting them for being brave and seeking help. Idk...I don't like him.
Dr. Phil is so out of touch of the normal person's plight. Yes, people should do what they can to get help, but if someone doesn't have $40,000 then he should understand that inpatient is just not a possibility to everyone.
There need to be places that patients can be admitted to that will help them cope for life NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES. It will take different amounts of time depending on the person & the severity of the disorder. People don't understand that when you know you are dealing with something for a lifetime, you feel helpless and hopeless knowing there IS NO CURE. They are put through quick, intensive programs and thrown back out there in the REAL world and expected to cope. Doesn't work.
@katieez01 You're absolutely right; however, being a Canadian (and SO thankful each and every day for it), I really feel like my brothers and sisters in the U.S won't be able to get past this "dealing with health issues, whether it's a regular doctor checkup or eating disorder or whatever, is a privilege that we can only deal with if we're one of the lucky people who have plenty of money to throw around" way of thinking unless they introduce (..cont'd..)
@katieez01 single-payer universal healthcare, and realize healthcare is a RIGHT and NOT a privilege. Once that is done, then parents and grown-ups will be able to actually act upon what they know they need to do health-wise without having to factor in all kinds of things that SHOULDN'T be a factor. I was shaking my head in sadness as I heard the mom saying that right now, if it weren't for a TV show, she'd have had to choose between saving her daughter's life or keeping their home...(..cont'd..)
@katieez01 As cheesey as this may sound, I am really rooting for you guys down there to finally win this outright war between giving ALL citizens a right which NO ONE should be without (ESPECIALLY living in an industrialized nation like the U.S) and profit-driven greed by private insurance companies whose SOLE purpose is to provide as little healthcare as possible to maximize their profits for their shareholders to the point where they actually HIRE people whose (..cont'd..)
@katieez01 job description contains only ONE objective : look over ANY medical claim a client makes and try to find ANY possible means (a technicality, a typo, some hidden rule..ANY means) to enable them to DENY coverage, which is the ONLY reason that people buy insurance in the first place!! I mean, I just found out, no joke, that insurance companies have a FIDUCIARY obligation (required BY LAW) to maximize profits for their shareholders.. it's so sick and perverse (..cont'd..)
@katieez01 About 55 years ago, here in Canada, we went through the EXACT same kind of fear-mongering and lies that you guys are experiencing down there, from the very wealthy corporations and the politicians they paid to do their lying for them. A man named Tommy Douglas from the NewDemocraticParty (who, even though he's long dead, is voted the "Greatest Canadian") didn't back down in the face of the EXACT same fear-mongering as in the states right now, and as a result, thanks to (..cont'd..)
@katieez01 him, EVERYONE, regardless of who they are, when they go to the doctor for most things, credit cards and insurance company-fighting aren't a factor in the decisions. We did it 50 years ago, and here's the proof that all of that fear-mongering you guys are hearing simply isn't true, 50 years later.
@katieez01 And that's why I'm really rooting for you guys, and I KNOW it's simply a matter of time before you guys have the RIGHT to healthcare that you deserve. Sorry that was lengthy, but I feel very passionately about this issue.
@ammarios Thank you for your series of comments. Most Americans support universal healthcare and object to the current reform on grounds that without a public option, current legislation further anchors us within the insurance companies own "rationed care". (Probably because we followed their 1994 proposal...)
I love how he says to her that if she loved her children she would do anything to get better. Its not about her love for her children, she probably loves her kids just as much as any other parent. An eating disorder doesnt change your love for your kids, its a personal thing that has to do with her, its not about her kids.
It saddens me to hear about insurance worries. The National Health Service in the UK is absolutely amazing - those who need it go to inpatient specialist eating disorder facilitates immediately FREE OF CHARGE
This all depends on Kaytee's desire to stop, spending all of this money on "help" isn't going to do any good and in the end, Kaytee's going to bleed her family dry.
Geez why is he asking questions he should already know the answer to?
And I don't like him berating the mom like that, I mean come on Dr.Phil if you were in her position would you sell your home? I just feel he is being hypocritical.
@limbdarkening Insulin is a hormone involved in the metabolism of glucose (sugar). When we metabolize sugar, our body uses it as energy. That which we cannot use as energy is stored as fat. If you do not have insulin (type I diabetics have none), your body cannot metabolize it, and thus can't store it as fat. Skipping insulin puts the body in a state of starvation, resulting in the breakdown of muscles into ketones then into ketoacids (leading to DKA). Unabsorbed sugar issecreted in urine.
"particularly important for Wanda because she has children" is it only me that finds that comment really stupid? The death of either 'girl' should be just as important as each other. Dr Phil = fail.
I'm sorry, but the people who say these women deserve to die are fucking stupid arseholes. they obviously don't understand the pain they cause, they make you feel like your fucking soul is being torn to shreds....
Dr phil seems like he's being fuck all help, he's just berating them. And I'm not surprised that wanda hasn't got any proper clinical help, diabulimia is not even classified on the DSM-IV scale, or whatever it's called
you honestly have the nerve to say that another human being deserves to die? much less because of a mental issue that they did not ask for?! you are so heartless! These girls are in a lot of pain, which is partly because of a bad decision they made but also partly something they cannot control. You are a bad person. It deeply sadens me when i see comments like this. how little faith I have in humanity anymore.. this just makes me so sad.
@Ayatron34 Ayatron34 is a faggoty ugly African BLACK ! ! BLACK ! ! BLACK GAY ! ! This beast, this lump of shit loves the batman( The death of batman) who is a manly handsome white man. This asshole is a BITCH. ! !
That would be a tough call - you sell your house, your daughter doesn't want help and then she dies and you have absolutely nothing, except the fact that you tried to help someone who obviously just didn't care and whom you loved.
What I hate most about this show is that Dr Phil seems to think that he's actually talking to the person and not the compulsion, the 'voice' of their eating disorders. Look at their eyes, these gals aren't hearing him except in spurts. If it was that easy to treat this illness we'd just be able to look in the mirror and say "YEAH I'm gonna take my insulin today! Yippee!" *rolls eyes* Wanda, you just hang in there sweetie, I have diabulimia too and my heart goes out to you! HUGZ! - Amy, age 40
@omshantipeace well, I'd certainly say she's acting like a "girl." I know this is a mental illness, and it's nearly impossible to completely recover from, but she's acting like she's accepted the fact the she could die, even if she doesn't want to, and just moves on. Like Dr. Phil said, she has very little motivation, and wanting to get better is the first step to treatment!
@DanceToriDancee I don't fucking care! They may have eating disorders but they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. They are not little "girls", they are grown women. Its totally sexist. A man with an eating disorder, or any mental disorder for that matter, would not be referred to as a "boy." Sexism on such a large scale as this needs to be called out or its not going to stop.
dude chill your balls. you are treating it like its freakin the end of the world! so what? girl and woman are compliments. no matter what age it is not sexist nor egotistical. Just chill. All that matters is that they are getting the help they NEED to live.
@DanceToriDancee Girl is not a compliment when addressing a grown woman (with children for that matter) and yes, it is sexist. Egotistical? I don't have any clue how you got egotistical from any of my posts. Yes, it is great that they are getting help for their eating disorders, so they can have their lives back. Hopefully Dr. Phil is getting these WOMEN ongoing treatment after the show. But I'm not going to "chill my balls" where racism or sexism or anything of that sort is concerned.
@omshantipeace- What the hell? Just stop complaining about EVERYTHING he says... this episode has NOTHING to do with them being GIRLS or WOMEN... just stfu! You're being a winey bitch! WTF?
@AntiCyberbully1 And you just overreacted to a valid comment that infantilizing women is disrespectful and does nothing to validate the person over their disoders.
I agree, Dr Phil doesn't seem very helpful in these types of situations. I think it's more just to get the story out, to educate the public about these problems and how to recognize the problem, and understand the dangers.
I'm kind of disappointed that he didn't do his research before the show, and hook them up with an appropriate clinic to help them with their problems.
Yeah I don't think Dr. Phil was very helpful. He stated the obvious and that was that. There's so much more to it than weight..as a person who has had a past with an eating disorder it frustrates me to see a professional like Dr. Phil not take that into consideration, you know? I know Kaytee and she's been fine as far as I know. : )
ok nerves struggling to survive?!.. these women are going to give up any sexual gratification along with all these other things like sight and well essentially life, just to look thin!? .. um ok.
Give up sexual gratification?? Where did you get that from? It is more than just being then but obviously you have NO CLUE about addiction or the stories behind addiction and eating disorders. The episode was only 2 parts b/c Dr Phil had these 2 people on a show about teen trends-RIDICULOUS!!! This is no trend. There are 500,000 people suffering from this addiction as we speak..when are people going to wake up and realize this needs to be addressed. Dr Phil needs an entire show @ diabulimia
I can understand doing research and trying to help them out but he would be really stupid to financially help them. they don't even seem like they want the help. they would much rather die skinny then get help. this girl is practically ready to have her mom sell her house to get her help when she know's damb well she won't even try to get help. i understand it's a disease, an illness, but they need help. this is way beyond starving yourself to be skinny. this is serious shit.
Diabulimia is so scary--it can kill so rapidly. My roommate at one hospital was diabulimic and had suffered a heart attack at age 26. Sad thing with this condition is that unlike anorexics in recovery (like me) a few bad days are unlikely to kill or damage you, but if a diabulimic in recovery skips her insulin and binges for a few days, she could die or have her organs fail :(
Insulin helps your body tissues (muscles, liver etc.) take up the sugar to use it for energy. So if they don't take their insulin, the sugar stays in the blood where it can't be used for energy and causes a lot of problems to the eyes, kidneys, nerves etc.
dr phil tells the 30 yr old if u loved ur kids u wouldnt do it...um its a DISEASE. it just proves that the fact that she's STILL not taking her insulin even though she has kids, that shes completely out of control. a normal person wouldnt kill themselves to lose weight.
I feel so bad for the 15 year old's mom! Shes gonna have to sell her family's home so her daughter will just take her insulin...that must be so frustrating!
It's interesting how you find out that there is an actual condition and name for something that you once were tangled in. It really isn't worth it. I was diagnosed a year and a half ago with type 1. I had already figured out that lack of insulin leads to weight loss (hence my diagnosis) and tried it again...on purpose this time. Your body really does begin to shut down, and I am still trying to repair the damage and get back on track. I hope this reaches those dealing with "diabulimia" as well.
Because all medical care (in the US) is expensive. A hospital stay is thousands of dollars and to stay in a facility for weeks on end (which is what it takes) adds up really fast. The sad thing is the insurance company can decide whether or not it wants to pay for it and I don't think most companies take eating disorders, mental disorders or drug addiction seriously.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!!!!!! This is exactly what my ED is all about. Thank God I am getting help for it now. I am so glad more people are learning about it.

Insulin helps your body tissues (muscles, liver etc.) take up the sugar to use it for energy. So if they don't take their insulin, the sugar stays in the blood where it can't be used for energy and causes a lot of problems to the eyes, kidneys, nerves etc.

dr phil tells the 30 yr old if u loved ur kids u wouldnt do it...um its a DISEASE. it just proves that the fact that she's STILL not taking her insulin even though she has kids, that shes completely out of control. a normal person wouldnt kill themselves to lose weight.

i know she's sick, but she's also selfish.
man up and take your insulin, don't drive your parents out of their home because you don't want to wear a size 2.

Wow Dr Phil is pretty insensitive.

Why IS residential care so expensive??
powellpicc1985 3 years ago
Because all medical care (in the US) is expensive. A hospital stay is thousands of dollars and to stay in a facility for weeks on end (which is what it takes) adds up really fast. The sad thing is the insurance company can decide whether or not it wants to pay for it and I don't think most companies take eating disorders, mental disorders or drug addiction seriously.
