I'm pretty sure the Singhalese were there first...not that it matters, but it just makes more sense. The Singhalese are of Aryan descent, most closely related to the North Indians. They have been completley isolated on the island and have completely different culture than found anywhere else in the world. Since the Tamil culture and language is the same at the southern tip of India and the Northern tip of SL, it would make sense that they migrated more recently. Cholan dynasty I think .
Actually the Tamils were there first. If you would have done your research Dravidians occupied India and Sri Lanka long before the Aryan migration from Persian countries and other regions. There is documented proof.

Being a British Tamil, I think this was a great response from Obama. Unfortunately this is a war with no good guy, Tamil Tigers, albeit fighting for freedom of oppression, have and do use terrorist tactics. The sinhalese government are fundamentally corrupt and discriminate against the tamils since Sri Lankan independance from british rule.
I'd like to see a united Sri Lanka, but it's difficult to see how it'd work given the incredible amounts of injustice and crimes committed against tamils.

I'm pretty sure the Singhalese were there first...not that it matters, but it just makes more sense. The Singhalese are of Aryan descent, most closely related to the North Indians. They have been completley isolated on the island and have completely different culture than found anywhere else in the world. Since the Tamil culture and language is the same at the southern tip of India and the Northern tip of SL, it would make sense that they migrated more recently. Cholan dynasty I think .

I heard something about Sinhalese ancestors were called Veddas... they lived in remote regions of Sri Lanka. Made a living through hunting mostly. Most of the current Sinhalese are their descendents. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Right and if I'm not mistaken, King Vijaya was banished from Northern India along with some of his followers and were sent to Sri Lanka (not sure when but a couple of centuries ago) He apparently married a Vedda woman (her name started with a K I believe) and their descendents became most of the Sinhalese population of today.

sri lankan tamils or eelam tamils as they call themselves have had a 2500 years long kingdom in the north: jaffna, kilinochchi, mullaitivu and the east: trincomallee, batticaola and amparai.
these tamil cities each had their own tamil kings! They for example were responsible for the big watertanks in the vanni which still provides water to the farmlands today!

The Tamil popualtion is about 15%, and they want the north - does the Muslim population then get the east? There are 100 million Tamils in India and yet tamil is not an offical language. in Sri Lanka with 3 million tamils it is. Why not form a separate country in India then? Im sorry, I have nothing against tamil people and im not saying they if they want a home go to india - what i believe is that all sri lankans will be able to live harmoniously - but in one country, not a divided one.

Although I have to say that I'm not entirely sure about the idea of a genocide- there are WAY too many conflicting stories floating around and I don't trust the LTTE OR the Singhalese government says, and I haven't personally seen any signs of the systematic killing of Tamils (although there IS certainly a stong nationalistic steak taught to the Singhalese at a very young age- I yelled at my little cousin for an entire car ride for discriminating against Muslims).

yeah I know some fucking sinhalese people who are idiots they think that they are beautiful and they are lions, and I am not one of them, they say I look tamil, and I am proud of it, I love Indians and some Indiands are tamils.
