Too bad Cleopatra was actually said to be rather unattractive and "mannish". And for everyone debating over her lineage, just stop. She's a Ptolemy. Ptolemy's were Greek, end of story.
Not only was Cleopatra greek, but egyptians weren't (and aren't for the most part) black anyway. Egypt may be part of africa but her people are part of the middle east. And i agree with countryhoner28 what does her colour have to do with anything?
Antony looks like a little child intellectually compared to Cleo, one of my favorite scenes. "Eat shit and die"? Really Anthony is that the best you could come up with? lol
Sounds like you don't know shit about history. She was in fact one of the most brilliant women in history. Just because the Romans were guided by their dick doesn't mean she was a whore. She used it to her advantage and still won in the end.
only reason she was popular was because she lived during the time of great people and was able to seduce those that were weak willed and slower minded unlike octavion
@punkzorr If you mean with "weak willed" and "slower minded" Caesar and Antonius, you are definately wrong. This series is NOT historically correct. I've done research in the life of Queen Cleopatra for about 16 years, she never seduced Octavian. This is a popular myth. She was queen of Egypt for over 20 years, she was a brilliant and very intelligent monarch.
Images of Cleopatra VII exist and she did not look like that, more of a stocky strong peasant type but the curly hair was probably a wig since she followed Egyptian practice and relied on their support against her family. She spoke their language and was recognized as Pharoah instead of a semi-Greek colonial ruler. She was divine so could only mate with her divine brother (much younger and totally homosexual) or someone she considered divine - Caesar and his (then) obvious successor Antony fit
Amazing series, but they shouldn't have cast a white woman to play Cleopatra. She doesn't fit the role at all. I know she wasn't black but she wasn't straight up white either. Not just her skin though, even her features just don't suit being Cleopatra. She's supposed to be exotic, this Cleopatra is really disappointing.

People people people....Cleopatra was neither black or white. You ppl should be ashamed arguing over race as if it really mattered. Besides, all the evidence points to her being of Klingon descent.
Why such racism? Why must you care about the colour of her skin? When, in history did that matter. That has nothing to do with anything she did, it's meaningless. I'm assuming most of you arguing are adults and it is sad to see how petty you are acting. Just appreciate history for the words, and the events, not the appearence of people.
"Many scholars believe that Cleopatra's paternal grandmother was a concubine. That woman's background has been assumed to be either Alexandrian or Nubian. She may have been ethnically Egyptian, and she may have had a heritage which we'd today call "black." but who cares honestly
@talkindurinthemovie yeah she may have had SOME black egyptian blood from a former ancestor...but the rest of her bloodline was of Greek royalty. .. but Egypt was pretty multicultural, .. it hardly matters i guess. also another tid bit of history.. the real Cleopatra was considered to be ugly, and not attractive at all... but yet she was a master at seducing males, and was incredibly smart.
@Sinnawai the thing is she still had native pure egyptian blood in her as well so she would still have some colour, also the tan from the sun in egyptian weather i'd say o.o
@jualkyn Well actually the aristocrats and upper middle in Egypt were mostly Greek(*some were Egyptian but the majority Greek) and the Egyptians were more the middle to lower class people. She would have color simply for the fact that if you are living in the Mediterranean, you are bound to acquire pigmentation. And if you mean her being native Egyptian by her mother, she would be more Greek than Egyptian because her assumed mother is the daughter of one of the Greek Ptolemy family
@Sinnawai that is all up to interpretation and context then who the true "egyptians" are in that sense if the rulers of egypt are ppl from greece? Aren't they technically egyptian at that point? Also it depends on what time period your talking about. Other civilizations didn't always rule egypt and there was a period of time where they were their own unity so if you mean cleopatra does not have a single drop of aboriginal NATIVE egyptian blood), i feel like she has a speck that blood at least.
@Sinnawai I have boxed sets of the two seasons of the HBO series ROME. Somebody should have slipped salt peter in Mark Anthony's food. Since he had his brains between his legs and did not give a shit if Rome got the wheat or not.
The circling around each other here is so well acted. I didn't realise that Cleopatra was played by the same actress who played the duplicious Lucy in Being Human.
Nothing makes me laugh harder than listening to blacks make the claim that Cleopatra was a black women..it just shows that not only do they not know a damn thing about history in general...they know even less about the history of one of the most famous places within the Continent of Africa....which most of them think is a country..Time to put down the sherm and pick up a book.
@WiseGuy5674 no my friend when we say black we dont mean skin colour--we mean mixed it has been done by National Geographic and other scientists that Cleo was ethic and had negro hair...google it
@kemetkush You are delusional, that arrogance can be your doom if a 3rd World War breaks in...never forget that, you listen to many fools, including White trash scum fags...take my advice kid...Europe cannot be defeated easy, it takes more than retarded words...and i am Roman blood for ages, so don't mix your drinks USA boy. Open your fucking eyes before acting like a clow...Roma Capvt Mvndi.
@kemetkush I am European and i know my History unlike you speaking crap to feel good about yourself...you fail like a science fiction worthless movie...at least some are realistic. You are a Nigger and always a Nigger slave minded weakling fool.
@kemetkush Doesn't mean all Africa is the same you Nation of Islam moron in retarded USA school system...Egypt has greater influences from Alexanders ppl and Romans later, even in Zimbabwe you find Phoenician influences...But Ethipia was early Christian and Hebrews are Black, i give you credit for that, too bad Jewish snakes stole that identity, but i know them very well, they can't fool me. Happy New Year.
@BigAl4250 who said all africa are the same moron? nation of islam? usa school system? egypt did have influences from rome later, i give you credit for that, to bad jewish snakes put a stop to that, but i also know them well, phoenician influences zimbabwe? happy new year////
@BigAl4250 ..Are you serious?..Muslims are destroying ALL European cultures from every angle, even yours my friend..They'll even breed you out eventually if you guys don't put the brakes on it soon..At least we have a couple of oceans between us...they drive buses and ferries to invade you. Good luck with that, by the way.
@WiseGuy5674 Not all my friend, mostly they are infesting Britain and those Liberal shit heads called French, NOT here...Actually USA has more Muslims per square mile than Europa. Here if they start preaching/building crap Mosques we give them a "nice" Sicylian hospitality. Happy New Year.Buona giornata!
@Sinnawai While Auletes' paternity is known, his maternity is not. He was the illegitimate son of Ptolemy IX, as he was also referred to as 'Nothos' which is Greek for Bastard. So his mother may have been an Egyptian courtier or priestess. Also, Cleopatra's mother is not known, as Auletes' only known wife Cleopatra V vanished from record roughly two years prior to her birth. And some ancient historians wrote that only Auletes' eldest child was legitimate.
@Sinnawai yep she was greek its a fact ptlomy was greek his daughter and he screwed a greek to produce her her coins show a greek face greek hair and greek complexion
Well, she does look greek/macedonian with a touch of egyptian with the makeup..i just didn't think she was pretty enough to be cleopatra.. :S Always pictured Cleopatra to be a real beauty seeing as that's one of many things she is famous for :S Great acting though :)
@Sinnawai The problem is that afrocentrics have usurped Egypt's history and now claim it for themselves. Little does it matter that not only was Cleopatra of pure European stock [Macedonian to be exact and therefore likely quite fair], but many other Egyptians were also caucasian as mummy remains and wall paintings have revealed. Take Nefertiti for example, although of pure Egyptian stock, she was classically caucasian looking.
@Rayarena I think Egyptian have lighter skin complexion compared to other Africans because the people migrations from the middle east which was not uncommon. So I think the Egyptian would have been a mixture of people. Cleopatra's family had Greek heritage so yeah her skin would be fair but her family came to power much later so I don't think it Afrocentric to say their were some dark skinned Egyptians especially since it was invaded by Nubia at some point.
@Rayarena Absolutely. The most vocal and ignorant blacks feel that because Egypt is in Africa it's somehow their heritage, wich it's not. Ancient Egyptians, probably looked like what modern Egyptians look like today, after all, they weren't african looking and Egypt, specially Alexandria on Cleo's time was a melting pot. Regarding Nefertiti, it is believed she was foreign, however, the statues don't present her with african features.
sweetie just because white folks tell u history doesnt mean that its accurate. She was not greek. She was a woman of color and afroid. The statuess prove it. White people destroy and tangle history. Study deeper if you care. Free your mind from white is right.
@missVeemack You really need to educate your ignorant racist mind, I've been reading about Cleopatra and Egypt for over 10 years now and I know that Cleopatra wasn't black, all evidence points to her being greek looking or mediterranean looking but most certainly she had no afro nor was she black.
. . . she does look Mediterranean. She has strong Greek features. 'Darkening' her wouldn't make a bit of difference since Mediterranean peoples vary in their skin-colour. This actress can certainly pass for Greek or Italian heritage, both of which generally fall under "white" as it is commonly used today.
@LaSerpentaCanta yes that would make sense due to the fact that she was from the ptolemaic dynasty which if veemack knew his history would kno that ptolemy was one of alexanders generals who took a egypt after alexander died and his empire crumbled.
@LaSerpentaCanta absolutely. The funny thing is that the ones saying she was black are incredibly ignorant, they don't know anything about history, if they did they wouldn't say such a thing.
@Bexitaestvita well I don't know about the blonde hair, are you being serious? =) And you spelled it right, her name in fact is Kleopatra, I don't know why it was transformed to Cleopatra, any idea on this?
@LaSerpentaCanta There are reports that say that. It isn't that hard to believe though, considering her heritage. As for the letter change, I think it was just carelessness on part of some historian.
No, keep lookin for that tomb, she won't be anything but Black like she's supposed to be, and then you'll be looking for a "tomb" to bury your preposterous theories about our kleo being a white girl. She was not one of the white euro niggers, she was black, get over it.
@IndividualParties "white euro niggers" damn, i was actually talking to you like a reasonable person, won't make that mistake again. enjoy your fantasies about history....
@LaSerpentaCanta Hey check it our somehow in all your reading on Cleopatra you forgot to read how in 2008 we already solved this using this little thing we call Science and she turned out to be bi-racial. Yep mixed .Type In Face of Cleopatra in google a real historian solved it.You know ordering the history channel doesn't really make you an expert on History right. And All black/mixed women don't have Afros. You and the other 28 ignorant ass pseudo arm chair intellectuals can suck it .
@MadelineKArita How the fuck can they know if she was bi-racial if they've never found her mummy and seen her skull or done ADN test?? What you saw was a THEORY not a fact catering to imbecile black people who feel they own egypt.
lol, you're in denial that she wasn't white, that is SO funny. Imbecile white people like you who feel they own egypt need to keep their greedy hands off of our history.
@IndividualParties lol YOUR history?? you wanna get all racial with these?? Why don't you fuck yourself and go study the life of Mammy at the cotton plantations because Ancient Egypt is NOT your history, nor is it black people's history, it's EVERYONE's history, imbecile bitch.
LOL, you are SO in denial, I love it!! This is so funny, I can't wait to see what desperate comment you'll leave next. Cleopatra wasn't white, and it's driving you fucknutrs. Typical of the white euro nigger, they want everybody to be white; they want it so bad that they start to imagine it until it turns into some kind of delusion. Soon they'll remember Dr. King as a white man, lololol, it's OUR history LOSER, keep your slimy hands off of OUR history.
@IndividualParties It's a fact that she was Greek, or mixed. She came from the royal line of Ptolemy who did not marry outside of their lineage generally, to the point that they practiced inbreeding. So I have to ask, what the hell are you talking about? Also, the fact she was Greek takes nothing away from the heritage, the amazing history, and acomplishments of ancient Egypt.
@IndividualParties holy shit. we know for a FACT she had an ancestral lineage from Ptolemy, no doubt about it. so remind me, how could she possibly be "black?" At best, she would have been mixed, and there's no evidence of that. What evidence do you have that she was a black african?
Caesar fucked her, I think he would know if he was fucking black cunt...
“Her breast were ever so succulent yet her skin was as dark as night, I lye with the beautiful Egyptian queen, even though she was as a nubian, I still wanted her.”
@IndividualParties "My source is julius caesar, dummy, you can't read? He fucked her and said she was black" Hahaha, ah ok, so you're a troll. cool, troll on man. I'll make up my own quote "Every morning I wake up and wash my lily white Greek ass, and thank the Gods I'm a Greek woman." -Cleopatra of Alexandria.
@BillKiernan agreed....I don't understand why some of these black people just won't accept it..same with the Jesus thing..they are saying he was black too although he definitely was not.
"in 2008 we already solved this using this little thing we call Science and she turned out to be bi-racial"
Yeah that was an air-tight discovery. A computer generated image of a missing skull from an unmarked grave that may have been her HALF sister, and their conclusion? "might have been some admixture"
I agree. I have no doubt that she had some Greek blood, but that was at 300 years before she came to the throne. You mean to tell me some Africa blood didnt get mixed in there.
@hotgrlsapp nope. Ruoles have a tendency to marry within the family or within other lines close to them. A syrian, would count, but not a nubian or a cushite.
Even in 300 hundred years... lets say she had 3 (which is actually a very high number) very darkskinned sub-saharan ancestors (which wouldnt have happend... because their were very few sub-saharan africans in egypt anyway). She would still after 4 or 5 generations look "italiano/greek" because her dark skin ancestry would eventually be "washed out". Case and point... Rashida Leah Jones. Who is 1/4 black, yet you wouldnt know that unless she told you.
The nobility and upper class of Hellenic Egypt (Egypt after Alexander the Great conquered them and the rest of the known world) were exclusively Greek. Alexandria had only one district for non-Greeks.
@missVeemack "The statuess prove it" which statues? the ones made of black stone? what about the white ones? or the reddish ones? what about the FACT that she came from the ancestral line of Ptolemy, Greeks?
@Sinnawai Exactly, while her family may have lived in Egypt for 100s of years - they intermarried, and so they obviously looked Greek. Cleopatra actually had red hair (she wore a wig), and blue eyes. Besides, even if this Cleopatra looked nothing like her, the actress played her part brilliantly. :D
@MICHELLEGIBBONSx She died by an asp bite because she thought it would take her strait to the gods. She died rather than being publicly demoralized and killed by Octavian.
@MICHELLEGIBBONSx They weren't her plans in history. By that stage Rome was the dominant power in the Med. Any other power that still existed by this point were pretty much at Rome's mercy. When Antony went to Egypt, Cleopatra didn't have any choice and had to co-operate with him, just as she had with Caesar. It was ultimately Antony's plans that failed.
And to say that everyone who fails is a fool isn't very fair. Hannibal failed and killed himself, but I wouldn't say he was a fool.
Too bad Cleopatra was actually said to be rather unattractive and "mannish". And for everyone debating over her lineage, just stop. She's a Ptolemy. Ptolemy's were Greek, end of story.

The Ptolemics would marry their siblings keeping in with Egyptian traditions in order to keep the line pure or whatever. SHE WASN'T BLACK!!!!!
danai2091 11 months ago 4
Why such racism? Why must you care about the colour of her skin? When, in history did that matter. That has nothing to do with anything she did, it's meaningless. I'm assuming most of you arguing are adults and it is sad to see how petty you are acting. Just appreciate history for the words, and the events, not the appearence of people.

"Many scholars believe that Cleopatra's paternal grandmother was a concubine. That woman's background has been assumed to be either Alexandrian or Nubian. She may have been ethnically Egyptian, and she may have had a heritage which we'd today call "black." but who cares honestly
talkindurinthemovie 1 year ago
@talkindurinthemovie yeah she may have had SOME black egyptian blood from a former ancestor...but the rest of her bloodline was of Greek royalty. .. but Egypt was pretty multicultural, .. it hardly matters i guess. also another tid bit of history.. the real Cleopatra was considered to be ugly, and not attractive at all... but yet she was a master at seducing males, and was incredibly smart.

@Sinnawai the thing is she still had native pure egyptian blood in her as well so she would still have some colour, also the tan from the sun in egyptian weather i'd say o.o
jualkyn 1 year ago
@jualkyn Well actually the aristocrats and upper middle in Egypt were mostly Greek(*some were Egyptian but the majority Greek) and the Egyptians were more the middle to lower class people. She would have color simply for the fact that if you are living in the Mediterranean, you are bound to acquire pigmentation. And if you mean her being native Egyptian by her mother, she would be more Greek than Egyptian because her assumed mother is the daughter of one of the Greek Ptolemy family
Sinnawai 1 year ago
@Sinnawai that is all up to interpretation and context then who the true "egyptians" are in that sense if the rulers of egypt are ppl from greece? Aren't they technically egyptian at that point? Also it depends on what time period your talking about. Other civilizations didn't always rule egypt and there was a period of time where they were their own unity so if you mean cleopatra does not have a single drop of aboriginal NATIVE egyptian blood), i feel like she has a speck that blood at least.

Rayarena 1 year ago 5
@Rayarena I think Egyptian have lighter skin complexion compared to other Africans because the people migrations from the middle east which was not uncommon. So I think the Egyptian would have been a mixture of people. Cleopatra's family had Greek heritage so yeah her skin would be fair but her family came to power much later so I don't think it Afrocentric to say their were some dark skinned Egyptians especially since it was invaded by Nubia at some point.
DarkIllusia 1 year ago
@Rayarena Absolutely. The most vocal and ignorant blacks feel that because Egypt is in Africa it's somehow their heritage, wich it's not. Ancient Egyptians, probably looked like what modern Egyptians look like today, after all, they weren't african looking and Egypt, specially Alexandria on Cleo's time was a melting pot. Regarding Nefertiti, it is believed she was foreign, however, the statues don't present her with african features.
LaSerpentaCanta 1 year ago
@LaSerpentaCanta
sweetie just because white folks tell u history doesnt mean that its accurate. She was not greek. She was a woman of color and afroid. The statuess prove it. White people destroy and tangle history. Study deeper if you care. Free your mind from white is right.
missVeemack 1 year ago
@missVeemack You really need to educate your ignorant racist mind, I've been reading about Cleopatra and Egypt for over 10 years now and I know that Cleopatra wasn't black, all evidence points to her being greek looking or mediterranean looking but most certainly she had no afro nor was she black.
LaSerpentaCanta 1 year ago 30
@LaSerpentaCanta
BUT SHE WASN'T WHITE ETHER IT WOULD BE BETTER IF SHE WAS DARKEN MORE MEDITERRRANEAN LOOKING, ITS OBVIOUS SHE WHITE.
yolainem 1 year ago
. . . she does look Mediterranean. She has strong Greek features. 'Darkening' her wouldn't make a bit of difference since Mediterranean peoples vary in their skin-colour. This actress can certainly pass for Greek or Italian heritage, both of which generally fall under "white" as it is commonly used today.
LIawIiet 1 year ago 4
@LaSerpentaCanta yes that would make sense due to the fact that she was from the ptolemaic dynasty which if veemack knew his history would kno that ptolemy was one of alexanders generals who took a egypt after alexander died and his empire crumbled.

@LaSerpentaCanta absolutely. The funny thing is that the ones saying she was black are incredibly ignorant, they don't know anything about history, if they did they wouldn't say such a thing.

@Sinnawai Exactly, while her family may have lived in Egypt for 100s of years - they intermarried, and so they obviously looked Greek. Cleopatra actually had red hair (she wore a wig), and blue eyes. @MICHELLEGIBBONSx How was she a fool?
mrchrisdavis09 1 year ago
@mrchrisdavis09 Because her plans collapsed and she killed herself.
MICHELLEGIBBONSx 1 year ago
@MICHELLEGIBBONSx They weren't her plans in history. By that stage Rome was the dominant power in the Med. Any other power that still existed by this point were pretty much at Rome's mercy. When Antony went to Egypt, Cleopatra didn't have any choice and had to co-operate with him, just as she had with Caesar. It was ultimately Antony's plans that failed.
And to say that everyone who fails is a fool isn't very fair. Hannibal failed and killed himself, but I wouldn't say he was a fool.
