All Green Day is doing is staying fresh in the music industry. They are very smart as musicians to notice how music has changed since the 90s when some people say Green Day was at its peak. Some people would be happy if Green Day returned to their 'old' music but some people would criticize them for being stale and not trying anything new. Plus its not like 'old' Green Day is dead or gone, they always create a few songs that remind their fans of their old material. They are a band that evolves.

You have to give credit to Green Day as musicians but as people also. Not only are they childhood friends but they made music that they wanted to make. Sure Green Day isn't as punk as some people labeled them as but when people say "I like the 'old' Green Day" it really bothers me because as musicians Green Day have evolved in almost every album that they have released. You can notice the differences in Kerplunk! compared to Dookie, or Nimrod to American Idiot.

hey guys, i work around a recording studio

the thing he uses on the album is known as a lo fi filter and it takes all the high tones out of the sound, it also has a slight bit of reverb, so there is most likely someone backstage patching through the mic live and on the album it is recorded with 2 mics and a VERY SHORT delay between his voice and a 2nd repeat of his voice. Hope i could help!

I only know this because I did light tech in Montreal and got to see all the backstage work. Lots and lots of interesting things going on backstage. Pretty cool.
