HELP Hey could you please tell me the steps to make this because I was hoping to make it tomorrow night and want a lantern that glows but is simple and easy to make. Could anyone help?
Use to make these years ago, used the stick from a kite to put the candles on and keep it open, unfrotunately when the candles burnt down to the wood it would create a small fire ball for a second or two. Finally one day somebody landed one in the woods, it had been very dry then and caught fire to the woods, they kind of clamped down on them then. Still make them for the grand kids, but make sure I keep an eye on them when they go up.
make a few holes at the top of the bag to let out compressed hot air. about 3, or 4 about the width or your thumb nail. it really depends on the size of ur balloon. i might make one of these
ive seen a lanter fly straight over my head it was pretty high at more than 150 ft and must have been traveling at 50 knots and i watched it dissapear over 10 kilometres away it was quiyte stable too even thogh there was quite a fast wind in the winter frosty i could see the clouds going north my breath going south but the lantern was heading west in a stable straight line and speed not rocking side to side i looked rite under it and it had two flames

F this video we just made one with a historic new fuel source. this 5 footer went upwards of a thousand feet vertically. and we chased it in the el Camino and watched it land 5 miles from launch point. we will be making a video explaining the best way to make a homemade hot air balloon before the end of 2008. peace losers.
All your girlfriends worried about is burning your fingers ... What about when it lands and burns fields of forest plantation. ....... To play it safe add a bit of fishing line to it so you can enjoy it then pull it down when your finished
Oh, and sterno isnt a solid. its either glycerin or gelatin with methyl alcohol. liquid fuels are safer because they either burn out or blow out on the long fall down ya see... Drinking straw frames attached to the envelope with aluminum foil tape work great, stuff the inside just past the last candle with recovery wadding for model rockets, or a bit of wool to make it fire resistant. The last thing we need is to set something on fire. Be careful
using trick candles is a very very very bad idea. They wont go out, thats the problem. if theres a failure, and they hit a house, land in a dry field... its basicly a fire bomb. Regular b day candles mounted on a popsicle stick about 3 mm space between each to maintain liquid wax surface tension on top of each candle... so it burns the wax instead of drip all over...
NEVER ever ever use trick candles. I know, trust me.
i have a friend that makes these all the time. only he uses telephone wire, a basket made of light weight foil, a dry cleaning bag, and sterno... a solid camp fuel. the gases from the sterno tend to flouresce if the conditions are right!!
Thats pretty cool i did something like this but with helium gas and a garbage bag but it was a long time ago and i didnt own a camera that could do video at the time, if i once again have access to helium gas and a garbage bag and my camcorder ill shoot a video of this in action and upload it here maybe as a response to this video
that looks like its had quite a lot of attention paid to making it me and my mate make them and just use 2 straws and they look proper crap but they still fly lol
Hiya, actually it takes about 20 minutes if you use a soldering iron to attach it all together and make the holes for the candles... and it doesn't add any weight!

smokey the bear says only you can prevent forest fires assholes.
asssface2000 1 year ago
it takes surprisingly little heat to keep the thing in flight so all the flames should be out before it lands

Brilliant to see such simplicity have such great results, if you weight the bottom slightly more it will have a more stable flight.

Works best on a cool night. A good idea is to use those trick candles that re-light themselves if they're blown out.
