There are many indicators that the UK is oppressive, militaristically towards other countries, but also towards its own people. It is still very much Dickensian Britain for many children -- one of the worst childhood poverty and deprivation ratings in Europe! Highest prison population. VAT oppression at 20%, other oppressions totalling 50%. If you don't start a business at 16 with supportive parents, then you have little hope when working 10 hours a day on min wage to pay bills.

Unless there is a Europe wide homogenisation of income there will always be someone who is worse off (even amongst the obscenely wealthy) as childhood poverty is measured as household income below 60% of median income. I am not saying there is not a very real problem with childhood poverty in the UK, only that the way it is measured (in relative rather than absolute terms) means it is impossible to remove - no process, no amount of wealth, no government policy can ever eradicate childhood poverty, we could all become wealthy home owners and run successful businesses and still someone somewhere in the lower 40 percentile (even though fabulously wealthy) would still be in poverty.
So, my point, yes childhood poverty is a real issue that needs to be addressed, no we are not living in a Dickensian Britain, we have come a long way since then in all sorts of ways.

@GiveItUp2012 Whether or not societies are influenced by natural selection is out on debate. But I think there is a lot of confusion out there on how natural selection works. I don't want to point out misconceptions in your thinking, but nothing "actually" evolves in natural selection. Living species come in many variants, "variants" being the keyword, and a certain variety will be more successful than another, and they will pass on the DNA containing that variant to their progeny, and repeat.

There are many indicators that the UK is oppressive, militaristically towards other countries, but also towards its own people. It is still very much Dickensian Britain for many children -- one of the worst childhood poverty and deprivation ratings in Europe! Highest prison population. VAT oppression at 20%, other oppressions totalling 50%. If you don't start a business at 16 with supportive parents, then you have little hope when working 10 hours a day on min wage to pay bills.

Unless there is a Europe wide homogenisation of income there will always be someone who is worse off (even amongst the obscenely wealthy) as childhood poverty is measured as household income below 60% of median income. So we could all become vastly wealthy overnight and there would still be childhood poverty as it is not an absolute measure.

I am not saying there is not a very real problem with childhood poverty in the UK, only that the way it is measured (in relative rather than absolute terms) means it is impossible to remove - no process, no amount of wealth, no government policy can ever eradicate childhood poverty, we could all become wealthy home owners and run successful businesses and still someone somewhere in the lower 40 percentile (even though fabulously wealthy) would still be in poverty.

If a government can afford to go to war using our taxes while people struggle to pay their bills for all the taxes they are forced to PAYE before they can pay their own bills, then I think we have a situation of oppression. Since virtually every government on record has used our taxes to fund wars and create business for private people and companies, I think it is fair to say we either pay too much tax or we need to replace this style of government with one that speaks for us.

I would caution people very strongly when they cite what happened in Egypt as an example of a revolution. You have only to look at its current state - martial law, any attempts at protests dispersed, the promise of some nebulous 'election' - to see what went on there. I saw with dismay the 'Tahrir Square' sign on the wall at Occupy LSX. If Tahrir Square is what you want, you might as well all go home now.
