This is an anthem not only for Italians, though that it very much is, but for all oppressd people. I LOVE this anthem and I love Italy. This is an anthem for civiisation itself.
It's not a question of Muti playing on the patriotic mood of the audience. This chorus was, to all intents and purposes, the anthem of the unification movement in Italy, and Verdi's name was the anacronym for it - Victor Emanuel Re D'Italia, so it would be almost impossible to celebrate this event without including this chorus. What Muti said, very loosely put, was that Italy would become 'si bella e perduta' (beautiful and lost) unless they, and the government, continued to fund the arts.
This should be an inspiration to all art performers to RISE and expose the mediocrity of polititians that "rule" us. They are silent us litle by litle. O MIA PATRIA...
Although I am not Italian, I was moved to tears by the magnificent performance and the emotions the words convey, esp. for those there. As for Muti "playing" on the patriotic mood of the Italian audience...why is that bad or take anything away from the performance or his actions? The words obviously meant something more to him than mere text from Nabucco. if the line "Oh mia patria si bella e perduta" failed to move you, then you have no heart or soul.
The performance of "Va pensiero" is great but the encore was called primarily because Ricardo Muti played on the patriotic mood of the Italian audience (on the occasion of celebrating the unification of Italy).
What a wonderful occasion! The audience becomes part of the encore performance as led by Muti! Members of the chorus are overcome with emotion! It would have been marvelous to have been there! A rare moment in music!
So if I'll give you an encore of "Va' pensiero", isn't only for patric reasons becouse this evening, while the chorus singing "O mia patria sì bella e perduta" (Oh my country so beautiful and lost), I thought that if we (Italian people) kill the culture on which in built Italian history, Italy really will be "la nostra patria bella e perduta" (our country beatiful and lost).
From 8:40 to the end he invites the audience to sing on condition that it keep the time! (MA A TEMPO!) :)
Therefore, if I am to re-play the aria VA PENSIERO, as you request, I do not do it only for patriotic reasons, but I do it also because tonight, while the choir was singing "o mia patria sì bella e perduta" (oh, my country, so beautiful and lost) I thought that if we kill the culture, upon which the history of Italy is based, then really our country will be beautiful but lost... (applause)
and considered that we are in a friendly atmosphere, here we are at home, in the theatre of the Capital....
The opera was played few weeks before a controversial law (to cut state contribution to the cultural system (theaters, concert halls, ballets, universities...))was due to be voted. This is the translation of what Maestro Muti said:
" I agree in saying VIVA L'ITALIA (long live Italy)... I am not 30, therefore I have lived my life; yet, as an Italian who travels a lot abroad, I am very saddened for what is happening.
Muti: Since reign here by an "Italian climate", I, Muti, I kept silent for too many years. I would like now ... we should give meaning to this song, as we are in our house, the scene of the capital, and with a choir who sang beautifully, and is accompanied beautifully, if you do not mind, I suggest you join us to sing together.
He then invited the audience to sing with the Chorus of slaves. "I saw groups of people stand up. While the Rome Opera House has risen. And the Choir has also risen. It was a magical moment in the opera. "
"That night was not only a representation of Nabucco, but also a statement of the Capital Theater to the attention of politicians. "
From 07:10 to 08:09 the maestro answers to the audience memeber shouting: "Viva l'Italia!" (Hurrah Italy!). He says: I am in agreement with "Viva l'Italia", but I am not 30 years old hence i have my experience and I am afflicted, as Italian citizen travelling the world, becouse of the Italian culture situation (cutbacks on public financing). So if I'll give you an encore of "Va' pensiero", isn't only for patric reasons, becouse this evening, while the corus singing "O mia pratria
