    yeahh¡¡¡

  • Listen dont speak

  • I have Battles in my life

  • It just blows my mind that anyone could actually comment on a lacking of chops from the drummer or anyone else in this band. Try tapping your finger to a consistent beat for more than a minute. Thats some deceptively hard stuff he's playing.

  • Just because it's hard doesn't make it good. This is the mistake fans of this sort of music always make. 'Pushing boundaries' is often shorthand for 'sorry we can't write tunes but if we all pull serious faces maybe no one will notice or dare mention it'. There is no soul here, only some machines ticking in their heads.

  • um

if this is soulless, what would you consider to be soulfull?

  • James Brown? Ho ho. Seriously, giving you my iPod playlist isn't going to prove a point at all. Some people have a weakness for this kind of music, I think they like the idea of being members of an 'exclusive' club, but it's sterile and ultimately unrewarding. It's what maths students tend to like

  • @sunbeam11 i hate maths and love battles ? I play music... listen to loads of different styles including James Brown. He might have soul rising through his grave right now but i still feel this music has meaning and purpose.

  • No Soul? Battles are whats good about music at the moment.

  • dude, the technique is there so that they can try new things, bands like battles are pushing music forward, actually accomplishing new things, not like all the mainstream shit thats out there, and what would you know about their future, they've released a full length album on warp. Pretty sure warp know what they're doing

  • i actually agree with you there. i'm a fan of battles. i saw them at reading and a few times on their UK tour and every time i left the venue feeling a little bored. cause it's not all that impressive after a while. sure the initial reaction is "holy shit this rules" but ultimately, i think it's a bit of a grasp at trying to out shine bands like Don Cab...which can never/will never be done. that's just my opinion though. i'm still a fan of battles all the same :)

  • they are in their future, each musician is already accomplished much in the past, note the previous bands they were apart of.

they are touring and repected internationally

and your grouping modern jazz bands stating they dont have much of a future, when they are the future trainers, instructors, teachers, and much more...

technicality is important, as well as soul, you can judge neither

  • *brains explodes from an overdose of awesome*

  • whoever said the original comment about Stanier sucking is probably just trying to get a reaction. it's obvious Stanier's a fantastic drummer. saw Battles last night and it changed my life

  • battles=groove

  • Wow. Dave can't wait to get stuck into Tras, and who can blame him? Anyone going to see them at Sheffield's Corporation next Thursday, with Clark playing as well (or any of their other gigs - including the one on the following Tuesday in Manchester - but having Clark also there will be amazing), will join me in a very good night, methinks.

  • Great band. Stanier is fantastic. Anyone trying to criticize his chops doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

  • I wonder why people always assume "Ian Williams in another band? he must be trying to parody Don Cab." People need to take into consideration that maybe Ian likes to play effin' math rock, and isn't trying to copy Don Cab but rather play a musical style he enjoys and is familiar with.

  • I love how they play everything faster live.

  • if you concentrate on mr. stanier's left hand throughout entire performance, it really becomes obvious just how good he is. towards end he starts to flash some super quick "copelandesque" embellishments on the hhats with both hands, pretty subtle and out of nowhere, it's kinda hard to see but it's there.amazing. a VERY in-control drummer.trust me i know.bravo!

  • LVNVUSA:

everyone who would be watching this video knows this. battles is not an "impression" of don cab, and JS does not "suck." Battles has a completely different feel from Don Cab, and i prefer battles (even though they're lacking in material atm). I hate when people try to objectively compare music.

  • i'm so fucking sick of people bringing up don cab...GET OVER IT man...battles is a completely different entity...if you dont like it then dont listen to it...because no one ..trust me..cares if you think it sucks ok? so fuck off :)

  • How fucking good are Battles??? I SOOOOO have Battles in my life.

John Stanier... maybe the best drummer there is.

  • a-m-a-z-i-n-g

  • i love how high john keeps his crash. i really don't understand why he does it, but it gives his kit a unique look. oh yeah, and battles is fucking incredible.

  • Where do I start when telling someone they're WRONG! So many different ways. Firstly the drummer was in HelmEt!!! Secondly Don Caballero are now a bad parody of what they used to be without Ian Williams and Thirdly I have Battles in my life, so f*&k off!

  • @hellshost I like how you said, 5 years ago, the phrase "I have Battles in my life" and now it's a big slogan for them. Or has it always been? Could you have made it up? That'd be so neat!

  • you forgot to mention that the drummer was also in Tomahawk. and that the "guitar player" also plays keys (at the same time) and samples. and that the other "guitar player" (the 2nd of 3) plays beatbox, processors, is one of the best solo experimentalists of our time, and is the son and protoge of Anthony Braxton, one of the greatest avant-garde jazz musicians to ever live.

yeah, we're gonna listen to you, idiot.

  • you obviously do not play drums(if you do, you must not be that accomplished, technically OR musically). i suggest taking lessons as well as a music theory class or 40 from your local college (comm. coll. is fine). Good luck! ps- NICE DRUMMING mr stanier!rarely do we see a drummer of such considerable chops play so modestly or with restraint like that, just the tasteful from-out-of-nowhere "glimpses" .

  • LVNVUSA--I think most people reading are fully aware of the previous bands of Battles members. Your lectures are not welcome or enlightening. Battles is Battles, what could be more simple? Che and Stainer are both fantastic. Stainer prefers more structure and restraint. Please keep you obstinacy to yourself.

  • Cant wait to see them live!

    Cheers

  • Nice one..

  • deadly. thanks!
