Love this footage!-inspite of the guy with the skinny tie. ALso never knew they played in Ohio back in the mid-eighties...how very lucky for them! I had tickets to see them play in miami in the early nineties sometime & they cancelled the show... :-(
Haha. I am grinning right now! That was wonderful. As usual, things like this tend to make me extremely jealous of people who were old enough to experience the scene.
What was great about the Post-Modern/Goth/Industrial/(what ever they brand it) scene & music was it was truly Multi-Cultural, Multi-Racial, and people of all ages. This couldn't be said of other (Record Label Driven) Music Genres that were mostly Homogenized. Funny how the TAIL wags the DOG in that these bands had a huge influence in mainstream music and film later on.
Great upload I wish I knew about them when they first came out. My head was into the Art of Noise at the time. It makes me feel good to know that I was listening to the past and future and didn't even know it. The 80s will rule forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ONails3 Thanks for embracing one of our finest exports, I had no idea how known they were in America - obviously being 21 doesn't help - one of the greatest bands of all time :)
wow, this very day (sept 19, 1985) happened the worst earthquake in all Mexico history. In the year that i was born. How i wish there was a time travel machine just to go to that concert.
this is so incredible it sounds like Ron Burgundy from Anchorman. "A rock happening" They are my all time favorite band funny how this clip treats them and their fans like they're aliens and now you hear their music in department stores and on commercials. Thank you soooo much for posting this.
Hilarious is the word. I saw the Cocteau Twins at the Ritz in NYC around this time. They were not an exciting live band, though I loved to listen to their music.
Holy shit. I was there and spotted 3 old friends in this video. Still ranks as one of the top 3 shows I've seen in my life, too. Had no idea this was covered by the news that night (hell, I don't think we came home til dawn). Other highlights of the day: meeting the band and Ivo at Staches earlier the day, and hearing the Clan of Xymox (recorded) for the first time ever in between Dark Arts and Cocteau Twins. I'm 43 now, WAAAHHHHHH!!!! hahaha
Wow. This is great. It might be nice if you could get a Facebook reunion started. I wasn't there, but if I was, that would probably be something I would do. Throw out the line and see who bites.
I think this is probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen on You Tube. I would have flipped my lid to be so lucky to see Cocteaus on TV back then. Thanks for posting it.
And on top of that, Jesus, this town *has* improved since then. 10 Does a good job here making the city look like a bunch of yokels out of a Bloom County strip.
Fantastic clip. I was there and remember it well. I designed the little xerox flyer promoting the show, which Curt cut out and taped to his calendar in the clip. Just those brief glimpses of School Kids and the New Releases bin (UNMARKED RECORDS $5.99) is enough to transport me back in time. Wild.
wow...haha...I'd never imagined the american press could be interested in this kind of music. They wouldn't be nowadays. It's all like a really weird dream lol...but it's so cool to watch this video. Thanks for posting it!!!
Thanks for uploading this, saw the band a couple of times once supporting O.M.D. such a wonderful band, the music is timeless unlike the presenters of this clip.....the music will live with me forever.
It's amazing that such a grassroots fan effort brought them to Columbus (I always wondered how it was the played that city, randomly--now I know). These newscasters, though, make the US seems SO square and boring. I love how they referred to the concert-goers/fans as looking "normal" during the day. So awesome.
That was... utterly surreal. Like some kind of weird alternate historical reality or something. Wish they'd given more press to the band than to people's hairstyles...
dtrisml me sentiments exactly. You'd think after witnessing such profound beauty and talent they'd try to cram as much CT music into that report as possible.
Well, this is about the last thing I expected to find here tonight! Enjoyable on several levels, including the mid-80's news program "theme" music. Oh, I miss big hair, too! It'll be back eventually, but mine is now starting to become salt and peppery, so I might not take part this time around, with my mushroom cloud doo from 25 years ago...
