its cat and mouse game, the song goes perfect with the whole movie, if you watch the movie every time carl is somewhere near Frank jr, this song starts to play in the background.
The music, this sequence, the story and Leonardo DiCaprio's performance elevate this film to something remarkable. Everything else is superb as well. A criminally underrated Spielberg film.
love the music...kind of some cool, progressive '60s jazz...this opening really set the mood of the movie...the dude who scored the movie is a genius...the graphics are reminiscent of some of the modern art of the '60s...
It's a nice little film. Certainly one of the more successful small scale Spielberg entires. (Better than Money Pit, Always, etc.). Have you had a look at the trailer? I remember seeing it in the cinema. Classy.
@TheConciseStatement Spielberg didn't direct Money Pit. But his name was plastered over so many 80s films that it did seem at the time he directed loads more than he did.
Fun Fact: John Williams and his orchestra recorded this in ONE TAKE with NO REHEARSALS. Seriously. They opened the music for the first time, picked up their instruments, and recorded it by sight reading. That's how good these musicians are.
The best opening credits sequence I have ever seen, including Maurice Binder's work on the James Bond films. Ingenious tactic to use paper cut-out animation enhanced by CGI, as opposed to regular all-digital or cel-shading/digital ink work. Many composers seem to lose their spark after a while, but in my opinion John Williams has consistently shown over his almost-50-year-long career that he has incredible rabbits to pull out of his hat yet. This is a great theme tune.
@dbyrnerulz you probably could make it your ringtone depending on the type of phone you have. Although it wouldn't be the whole 2:33 minutes for the ringtone yet it would be an awesome one.
@Sadyechester is right. Take one popular, trickier example - the iPhone. With the iPhone you can only have a ringtone up to 40 seconds. To base a ringtone on a full music track : Use a program like Audacity to precisely cut out the piece you want OR adjust iTunes' Start/Stop Time on your track, convert the track with the AAC encoder, and remember to reset your original's times. Then rename your new file's extension to m4r and ensure it's in your iTunes library for the phone to find.
I bet Spielberg & co. had a lot of fun while making that flick. one of the most imaginative opening credits in movie history for sure. reminds me of credits for Pink Panther movies.
@TheConciseStatement no, Kuntzel and Deygas did NOT do the Mad Men opening credits, though both of these credits do use a cool, minimalistic style. Imaginary Forces did the Mad Men opening.
I remember when I saw this at 16 and how I wished I could have done the things this man did. Go around travel the world livign a stylish life with gorgeous woman.
Yeah, that is a shame. This was released in winter 2002, and Alias only started in autumn 2001, so perhaps she wasn't quite famous enough for that one scene to get her onto the opening titles. They did devote a nice little featurette to her character on the 2-disc DVD though.
@TheConciseStatement Ellen Pompeo also has a part as a stewardess, but her name doesn't appear in the opening credits either. Probably because it was before SHE became famous for Grey's Anatomy.
Spoils is too strong. Foreshadows is closer. I can't remember anyone telling me that while watching the film, they still had the specific episodes of the title sequence in their head, and that spoiled the unfolding of the story.
I love the fonts in the opening sequence. Great attention to historical detail. Do they have a name for a font expert who can match fonts to different periods in history? These were clearly late 50s, early 60s fonts. I don't know how I know that...they just have that look about them.
Love this movie, I believe it desserves more of an 8/10 (perhaps even leaning towards the 9 end of an 8) vs the 7/10 the uploader seems to have bumped.
Just to defend that decision for a second, when I think of the 8s or 9s of Spielberg's body of work, it's generally stuff like the original three Indiana Jones films, Schindler's List, maybe even Saving Private Ryan, and possibly even his constantly cinematic and ambiguously menacing TV movie from the 70s Duel, which really put him on the map as someone who should be in the movies rather than telly. I couldn't honestly put this in the same league of filmmaking as those classics.
I don't think Spielberg intended it to be anything other than, as he says in one interview, "a rich dessert", and that's certainly what we got in the finished film : a small scale character drama of a boy looking for a father figure (Spielberg's films are so often about the theme of a broken home, informed by his own parents' divorce) with some slightly comic, slightly melancholic touches. Doesn't say anything profound, but it's an enjoyable journey with nice production design.
Incidentally, just to give you an idea of where my head is at, to me Toy Story 3 was genuinely, like you say, an 8 leaning towards a 9 (and it may well be a 9 with further viewings) because the script and emotions extracted from that film were in a totally elevated class to the norm. But it's not like I copy and paste the critics' consensus into my head. For instance, like Catch Me, I felt ultimately Inception was a great ride worth about 7/10, yet couldn't say it was much more.
