The double bang is the sound barrier being broken. when anything goes through the sound barrier a pressure wave is created the air in front expands (the first bang) then air close's back in (the second bang).

Mid day @ Black Rock Desert? not enough humidity for mist, and resolution would need to be a lot better to see the shock waves (they'd be visible as the air density and therefore it's refractive index changes significantly, but only just.)

There are, on the internet, various still photos in which the shock-waves can be seen as a change in refractive index when viewed against the background. The photos are very interesting.

See also video "Thrust SSC - View from air 2" by private custard. In this vid, as the SSC pulls into view, there is a wide dust cloud to kicked up to both sides of the SSC by the supersonic shock wave. The dust shock-cloud subsides by 18 seconds as the SSC decelerates.

you won't actually see the sound barrier bring broken, for that to happen you have to have condensation in the air which will form into water because the pressure wave in the air forces it together.

if you are trying to say a mclaren accelerates afster to 100 you are probably correct due to instant acceleartion from engine to wheels whereas the jet engine will begin to accelerate faster at higher speeds. A jet car easily out runs any form of internal combusion engine.
