This may be one of the easiest ways to put a sharp edge on a knife I've come across. I tried it with my cold steel recon 1 tanto ultra lock model today. With some 1000 grit paper and about 20 mins that bulky thick knife of mine was able to not only cut but fillet a piece of paper. It worked so well I used the same method on my SOG Tac auto, cold steel ti lite vi and a co workers little combo edge gerber.
just as I posted that last one i realized - yes, you can use cutting oil to keep the grit clean, make things cleaner and more efficient, probably less polishing later too from my limited experience. Should really re-read before I post... Then again, it wouldn't be the interwebs if people did that:)
To be fair, a) the guy did say "for those of you who don't have all the power tools", and b) this is not really sharpening per se, its more of a re-profiling - albeit mild. As to people who say screw it I'll let a pro do it, well, whats the point of watching DIY vids? We all know a pro can be found to do everything for us... If you don't enjoy doing these things, generally speaking DIY saves you nothing - not even money. I think its a good idea, within its context.
im getting a cold steel 12 inch bowie machete in the mail soon, and i here its edge couldnt cut a peach, and i want something like Nutnfancy has. i dont want to promote his videos over yours but just as a point of reference, check it out. anyways, will this method work with a large bowie knife? and lube? do i need 3 in one or honers oil?
any suggestions would be great.
also, should i start the process of sharpening it by grinding it on a wheel first?
essentially, yes, you could do what nutn had done to his - but, it will take a while. I would suggest with the kind of crap edge cs gives you to start, you might want to start with a coarser paper. At first I'd skip the mouse pad. Then as you get the profile you want and an even edge, do what this vid shows. No need for oil, you are not heating the metal when going slowly by hand. IMO:)
Good to hear - it IS a budget blade, perhaps they had qc/qa issues with a few batches and now fixed it. Glad to hear as I have an idea for a couple - one to use, one to modify a bit. Figure at that price I can afford to make learner's mistakes. Cheers!

Hey Peter whyd' you stop making folders?
You made the BEST!!! I'd say your knives have the same quality of an XM-18 from Rick Hinderer.
Hopefully you still check your channel messages lol.
Awsome review!
Keep up the good work :D

geez?!? did he say hours!?!?
I think I'd rather work 0.5-1 hour overtime at work and just leave it to a proffesional...

when making a convex edge if the blade is cpms30v yould you start with more coarse than 400 say 300 to 350 until i get a burr?
skil1977 2 years ago
what grit do i start? 1600?
Dmajorproductions 2 years ago
start at a 400 grit for those extra hard steels
skil1977 2 years ago
and to finish? its 1055 carbon
Dmajorproductions 2 years ago
you can go as high as you want id say go to 2000 grit then strop it depends on how sharp you want it and how you want it to cut

Put a line from a sharpy on the edge so you can tell if your taking the metal off to high.

I also use smooter sand paper. The kind you can use with water. Much better job. Finish with a leather strap. Test it... cut a sheet of paper
