If her vision problems had to do with her cornea being cloudy, couldn't she just have had a cataract (unless this operation was relatively 'cheaper' for her - being somebody's guinea pig) ... well unless there was no cornea left to recover... (a cataract simply takes a slice off of the surface or something) ...
I suppose the only reason they needed a tooth was because they needed the tissue to patch it?
