my insurance company in NY added a transgender surgery policy at the end of 2008, but they require even more than the Standards of Care do & it was getting too expensive to keep the COBRA my insurance (i turned 25 in jan).
sorry it came off wrong. it's just that it's talked about sooo much lately in the trans community on lj lately (cis-privilege, etc) that i was a little overwhelmed with thinking about it this week. it's definitely a problem in our society on many levels, which is why i brought it up.
thank you for the video, i am actually using some of the info you all r giving the community for an animation skit im doing for school. on GQ variations and privilage. as well the difference in male assighned and female assighned at birth who identify as GQ. if you have any suggestions for my skit please throw me a bone and that gose for anyone who sees this. thank you again for the video
Because of our wonderful society and first-hand experience, it's hard for me to express my gender expression nowadays, so that's why I tend to stay behind the curtains, but thanks for the video and good luck on your top surgery.
You mention race, specifically the prevalence of caucasian genderqueer people as opposed to people of color being genderqeer. However, you did not mention why this may be or cover this in your post at all besides the "white female college student" comment. Could you or Dylan expand on this? As a genderqueer trans-person of color I'm quite interested in why this may be.
i guess what i was trying to get at is that whiteness is another place of privilege (like being college educated). obviously there are genderqueer POC, but as you can see from the channel, they are outnumbered at least in terms of speaking out about their identity. the more privilege you have, the more you can mess with gender and get away with it-except when it comes to male privilege b/c men give that up when they express femininity. what a wonderful society!
I thought that this was what you were aiming at, "whiteness is another place of privilege" in general society. Dylan didn't mention anything in video so I'll go ask zir opinion on the matter.
I'm a male-assigned genderqueer person. We're out there!
