  • So this is the reason my drawing ability seems to have disappeared since I was little. Whatever.

  • Unfortunately the university old cronies in their ivory towers don't want it to change because they are sitting pretty. They (deans etc.) earn a lot of money and have a lot of power where they sit. Some HE's in the UK are a form of indoctrination and debt slaving. Either you believe in their way of thinking or you get a low grade or you get kicked out. Some HE institutes have become so narrow minded in this respect that they will do ANYTHING to resist this change.

  • That my uncle and ken keep up the good work

  • See Sir Ken Live in Norwich UK on The 18th of November. I'm lucky I live in Norwich I'll be there go to his web site 'around the world' tab or search specialist education.

  • I am a organism,Not a mechanism.

  • The natural conclusion is school vouchers. I can't imagine how awful school is for the mechanically minded and mathematically inclined, but putting them into pantaloons and leotards is hardly gonna make their lives any better is it?

    That's effete elitism for you...

"We'll MAKE them do drama and dance"

How about just accepting that centrally planning education is a misguided view in and of itself?

  • lol

  • why only 8 minutes? the whole talk in its entirety is much more informative.

  • this man is a man after my heart.. and owes huge debt to Josef Beuys

  • really enjoy Ken's interesting thoughts points of views and opinions, not sure its all true, but a lot of great value! thanks Ken!

ps read his book 'The element'-he is a bit if a hero of mine i must admit

    very Inspiring !

  • I was so depressed at high school that I just picked a random post-secondary and a random degree in geography hoping to just get a random job and get through life without realizing I still need to put in tremendous amount of effort. The point is you need to put in the effort anyway, put it where you have passion in.

  • At 58, my creativity is finally coming back after having it pounded out of me, what a breath of fresh, realistic air Sir Ken is. Parents should also learn how to identify, support and foster learning to suit their child/children.

  • Its not just a utopian idea to have creativity thoroughly integrated in schools. I think when he says "every education system in the world places literacy above creativity" I think he must not be informed about REGGIO EMILLIA schools. I am an art teacher at one of these schools in america, and we have creativity in every subject we teach, we teach logic, we teach above grade level and in all learning styles. This isn't just a fantasy- these schools are real and the students flourish incredibley

  • Is Emillia Reggio primarily aimed at early childhood? What about secondary students?

  • Comment removed

  • apparently spelling is not a major focus

  • @liarlady Actually in his book I think he mentions Reggio Emillia schools (or a similar type of school), but he is not so interested in providing case studies as in polemicising on the issue and addressing its points without barrages of examples and statistics. The students at these schools may flourish, but everybody else is languishing in an economically driven, over-standardised factory, and this needs to be changed.

  • I agree, but it's rather utopic: how would you implement something that encourages creativity growth (which is something quite unpredictable) into a deterministic system? (school system is based on whether you can or cannot apprehend certain knowledges)

  • Einstein said and I agree "Imagination is more important than knowledge"

  • @Elin48 .....GREAT quote,,, yes people NEED to realize this---especially since it was spoken by the guy who's universally recognized as 1 of humanity's greatest innovators.

  • his intention is not 2 influence anyone. the choice is up 2 u as what u want 2 do w/ your life. he's just stating his knowledge & experience about the topic. some may consider what he has 2 say, & some won't

  • Do schools kill creativity? If creativity was a person schools would be it's concentration camp! I think that young people are going through a creativity holocaust perpetrated by teachers especially ones who hate their jobs. Everyone who agrees this is a disgusting inconvenient truth give me a thumbs up. BTW I'm only twenty years old and I understand this.

  • twenty... that's already too old... (i'm twenty too). We're always too old to understand something like this. We should not have had to understand it.

  • I understood this when I was in 6th grade when I was thirteen. I understood it back then and when I did people always told me when you get older you'll appreciate it to them I say go fuck your selves:) I'm just empahazing twenty because everyone thinks people under twenty one in my country deserves no rights. (and ironically that country is America.)

  • @74u73hjd I'm 17 and I approve this message

  • we wish more people were watching this - the misunderstanding about the importance of arts subjects is remarkable. Hmmmm.

  • Where do rich people's children go for education?

rich people like CEOs, business owners

  • Im glad I watched this!

I agree with what he has to say; students (like me) are effectively told what to do with our lives.

I find that Creativity, aspiration and indivuality are but theories in todays world, especially in my country (NZ). The world needs to be treated against its Tall Poppy Syndrome - there are different ways of living than school/college/work-wife/kid-divorce/keep-working/force-your-kids-into-the-same-pattern-die.

Aim a little higher, or in a complete different direction!

  • I like what he has to say

Our education system currently serves two purposes; it doubles as a sorting system and day care center.

We are left with many many options, thanks to school

    College, military, jail.

I have come to realize, against my hopes, that our schools ARE dumbing down our kids and stunting their wonderment and creativity. Most likely in order to produce a docile and stupid working class. It is difficult to accept, but as responsible parents we must, for the sake of our children..

  • Our teachers incompetent and protected by the union. Our testing regulated by the Bush Administration. Our children drugged.

    Their information faulty and biased.

    Illiteracy running rampant.

The situation is worse than people know, and the adult generation's refusal to believe and acknowledge the problem is irresponsible and wrong. I hope enough people join our fight against it. I really wish we would implement the voucher system. Even if it fails, though I dont think it will, its worth the try!

  • I dissagree- I observe teachers be mentors all day, with crowded classrooms and class plans dictated by state test outcomes. Most of them want to teach so badly, but until we change the "make them accoutable by testing the kids" idea, we will never give teachers the freedom to run their own classrooms.

  • I like what he has to say.

Public education system currently doubles as a sorting system, and day care center.

You end up with many many options thanks to school.

    College, military, jail.

I also have come to realize, as much as I went against it, the education system is actually dumbing down our youth and stunting their wonderment and creativity. Most likely in order to produce a docile stupid working class. It is difficult to accept, but for our childrens' sake we must.

  • I knew Ken back in Liverpool in the 70s. With long hair and leather jacket he used to deride anybody remotely corporate. What a sell out. Second hand Tom O'connor stories passed off as his own, name dropping and laughing at his own jokes, people that fall for this bull must have led a very sheltered life. Sorry Ken, you sold out la. BTW has anyone else noticed that it's always academics that want to teach the world how to be creative? That makes about as much sense as a virgin sex counsellor.

  • 1 can you do better BillGits

2, who has the right to judge people only God

, no man is always correct in his ways and no man knows everything, this man may have just realised, 'hold on, my approach to life needs to change' at least he's preaching something positive to people that can bring about a change, tell me what positivity are you bringing to the world, p.s. learn to criticise constructively.

  • dude his former self would say he sold out, his current self may say he was misguided. the present is all that matters. in present times he has a wonderful message and he tells it well.

He is doing good. leave it at that.

    in short, STFU BTICH
