  • This was a hurricane swell that came through the Bahamian Channel/swell window in the Summer of 2003 with the angle of the storm setting up perfectly before moving off north. I remember driving up off Atlantic Ave that morning in Delray & getting out & "Going Holy-$H1T"....it looked like "Reef Rd" but backwards with the RIGHTS just being AMAZING.....only happens when the Hurricane's direction & swell size is just right....like once every 20+yrs

  • Great waves and some damn sho nice shore break there too.

  • florida....god i hate flarduh.....

  • at 0:52 he was paddling harder than shit and pooping

  • wtf i thought the first guy was paddling out so i was waiting for him to get pounded

  • That's amazing! I have never seen anything like that at Delray Beach!

  • delray?? wtf

  • its Delray? LOL

  • What hurricane was this and where in Delray in FL?

  • And the water is sooooo warm!!

  • My grandparents would always take us to Delray Beach every summer. Where the waves were so amazing. My brother and would pretend to be standing on the water in the middle of the ocean, but actually we were standing on a huge sand dune. As kids it was fun. Great memories that we will treasure forever...

  • maybe next time go to a little higher view point still good stuff for florida

  • shit here in melbourne florida we get pretty straight waves. ive been wanting to film some waves and post em up.

  • Just so everyone knows it never gets good in florida and it is super easy to paddle out. So leave us to our crappy waves. We are all kooks who have never surfed "real waves". I-95 is closed at the Georgia/Florida border, so catch your plane to Orlando and dog your rental to Sebastian Inlet, the only "REAL" wave south of Hatteras. Better yet, stay home and clog your own line-up

  • @rickitickidicki was that meant to be sarcastic?

  • are you sure that was Delray Beach? hurricane or after tsunami?

  • are you sure that was delray. hurricaneof after tsunami?

  • @aquarobinson hurricane. waves are NEVER this big here

  • @benjie414 duval. jax beach gets the best swell.

  • Swell of the decade has def. Been this year in sat. Beach florida solid 18-20 in aug and it's been close to 12 every month since

  • 5:34.....your ass is flat woman

  • It was 6-8ft and most, not all, were reeling. Not swell of the decade. Thats just what that doosher filming it thinks cuz he rides a SUP just like everyone else in Delray. No one out cuz its 5 ft too big for anyone who lives around here. haha.

  • @bobbodipper what is a SUP?

  • @bonehead711 Stand Up Paddle Bored Bonehead.

  • @IMUSTBREAKU82 dont you mean Board? And really it should be SUPB! not SUP at your not actually on the paddle but on the board! Thanks and read your dictionary.

  • @IMUSTBREAKU82 No its SUP Dueshbag. Kook!

  • hey indo boy.suck a dick and then swim in your toilet. we take what we can get here pussy boy.come to the beach here and run your fucking mouth and i bet youll go home with a new smile u fuckin bitch.

  • sweet.. i've lived there for 3 years and never scored anything like this in Delray.. missed out

  • these are monsters for us south fla boys

  • @ surfkook100

take your indo likeings back home. Let us florida boys have our " swell " that compared to your shitter...........

  • I was in Indo the same time this was flimed. They got there swell of the decade too. I saw waves in my toilet bowl that were bigger. The waves were hiting the cliffs so hard the F ing ground was shaking. True talk.

  • yeA i was out there but it wasnt that good way over exagerated

  • gay boys

  • bouncy, lame big waves....no barrels...go upcoast a little kooks..def not a korn section lol

  • What caused this swell.. In May!?! Just moved S FL, so here's to more of these. Btw - in Hawaii they now officially measure wave faces - to many tourists were getting in trouble after hearing the surf report and thinking 3 foot actually meant 3 foot.

  • its ALWAYS flat well when i went it was flat every time.

  • i remember that day, it was closing out bad. and theres been way bigger swells days then that.

  • yes really seems to be closing out. dumbass

  • I go here once a year delray beach I love it here!!! much props to whoever posted this!

  • damn bro thats insane i was just there the other day there was some pretty big sweellls there yo how far do yu go north from the paytoll parking?

  • Strong back hand surfing at 1:30

  • that would suck paddleing out there lol

  • Damn, looks a shit load like Spanish house.

  • No way "Bells" is bigger than Waimea, Bra!!!!

  • Wow.

What a "nice fella" this "Chappy" person is. How articulate he is. Right. This is the kind of guy who goes back to his $10.00/hr loser job on Monday.

These was are just an AVERAGE swell for California. We will get a swell like this in 3 weeks. And if this is the "swell of the decade" for FL I'm glad I don't live out there.

  • Take note,This was in south Florida. Delray Beach is Flat 10 months of the year unless a Hurricane hits direct and then its just a chop.

North Florida on the other hand see's swell like this regularly. Oh and I remember your the guy that always gives everyone shit on youtube. Whats your deal? Its so easy to type out your fustrations. Try it out in the street's!

  • oh fuck you, everyone know the swell is good in cali. Let us have are fun.

  • ohmygod thats fucking sick! I lived there last year for 6 months and didnt see NOTHING like that, haha. DAMMIT

  • nice waves, but it's a damn shame most of them are going unridden.

  • haha when the video started I thought it was actually gonna be a 10-12ft swell and I was going "holy shit, that guy is gonna get so worked with that set coming" then when it rolled through I realised it was about 5-6ft. Nice swell though, looks pretty clean and the banks aren't shitting themselves at all. And if this looks like pipeline then my bathtub looks like the Superbank.

  • chill out kelly

  • pause the video at 2:39. The surfer is probably 5.5-6ft tall. How is that NOT a 10ft wave??

  • I will agree that the wave has a 10ft face, but it's not a 10ft wave. I don't know, maybe you call wave sizes differently where you come from, but we call waves from how big they are at the back of the wave like most places do, not the front. For instance the same size wave will have a larger sized face if it goes shallow real fast (reef or ledge setup) or will have a smaller face if it is on a gradually shallowing bottom (typical beach break).

  • I've heard this most of my life, measuring the wave from the back. Well I don't know about the rest of you, but I ride the face of the wave. I understand what you are saying, but by your own description a 3' swell could have a 2' face at one break and a 6' face at another. When we get our info from the wave buoys how do they measure them? From the peak to the trough. So by measuring from the back one person could be riding a head high wave, another a waist high wave and both would be in 3' surf?

  • They are describing it incorrectly. Measuring the back of the wave is ALWAYS 1/2 the face height. I surfed my whole life, I live in Hawaii and I have worked at NOAA. A 3' wave will always have a 6' face. Measuring "from the back" is just determining the wave height from sea level to the crest, not including the trough, which is equal to the crest height.

  • You're going to have to "prove" that to me. I don't see how the back of the wave could ALWAYS be half the face height. In fact, even at my local break the waves bounce off of the jetty and make the waves next to it bigger than say 100 yards down the beach. Otherwise I agree with you, "Measuring from the back is just determining the wave height from sea level to the crest". So what do you do with the rest of the wave? Ignore it? I ride the face of the wave, not the back.

  • People just say "they measure the back of the wave." Thats not actually what they do, it's just generally the same height. Picture a series of waves on a flat line. They wave as much above the line as they do below, so therefore the "height" is always 1/2 the face becaue the crest and trough are equal. Yes, I think its better to describe them by their face height, I'm just explaining.

  • So, how big is it? Anyone who wasn't out that day to see the BACK of the wave couldn't know by that standard. Now this information might be old, but I saw a video of what was suppose to be the biggest wave ever ridden. It was said to be 85'. Now, was that 170' face, or was it 85' at the back? What were the wave buoys saying that day, 42 1/2'? I haven't checked, but I feel quite sure that the buoys were showing 60-80' waves. Why? Because waves are measured from the crest to the trough. So back to

  • ........this video. I've been to Hawaii. This would be about a 2-3' day by their standards. Now no one in Florida would call this 2-3', but in places like Hawaii where they are blessed with lots of big surf they can be smug and shrug this off as a small, 2-3' day, maybe even less. My only argument with this whole deal is this: By applying random standards no one is quite sure how big the waves really are when discussing a particular spot. By measuring from the crest to the trough everyone knows.

  • Do you ride the back of the wave? NO, you ride the front, therefore measuring it any other way is just pointless and vague. If you're referring to the height of the open ocean swells, well that's a different story. And FYI, the size of the face of the wave isn't calculated by doubling the size of the swell.

But of course everyone likes to feel cool by undercalling the size of the waves because saying it's 2 feet when it's overhead makes you the f*ckin man, right?

  • Exactly, it's just a way for those blessed with good surf to feel smug about it. Otherwise it's just a random way of measuring the wave, depending on how macho one feels or the locale. Can you imagine if NOAA decided to measure the waves differently in one location than another. When you went to check out the buoys you really wouldn't have any idea what the wave size was without allowing for the "local" factor. But in the end this is surfing and not science, so talking smack is part of the game.

  • The Hawaiian system, which many surfers use, is to call waves by the size of their backs, which is 1/2 the size of the waves face - which represents the actual wave height w/o the trough preceding it. Surfers never look at the size of the waves from the back, they always look at the front and 1/2 it. So these waves may be 5.5 - 6 ft, or 11 to 12 ft faces.

  • and yes i surf, and know what the fuck im talking about. i surf big steamer lane whenever theres the swell.

  • this does not look like pipeline. have u seen how heavy pipeline is. this is not heavy. its good sized but its not very hollowed out, kinda mushy actually. and 10 feet is decent, but not huge. pipeline easily hits 20 feet on the biggest swells, and is so hollow, steep, and shallow. these are fun solid waves though

  • sick vid man.. can u say pipeline

  • looks nothing like pipe

  • That must have rocked. Thanks for posting.

  • yeah, seriously. whatta day!

  • i was there

  • lots of waves, not much surfing

  • that tells you there are NO CROWDs in Fla I live 10 minutes North from Delray never crowded Now if this were Cali youd be running people over and the water is 80 + here

  • kinda looks like pipeline

  • that day i stayed out of the water fukn crazy

  • Wimp ass kook. That water is warm. Try Northern California.

  • Nice vid, nice music :)

  • Yes that is true.I saw the footage.I believe Kevin Welsh from Melbourne,Fl shot that footy.

  • If you want to see the biggest surf from Florida, call the local surf shops in Melbourne. There was a dude that shot footage all day Halloween, 1991 from the 3'rd story of Ramada Inn at RC's in Melbourne. Some of the wave face were in the 20 to 25 foot realm. Unheard of for the East Coast.

  • biggest waves in delray

1991 halloween "perfect storm" NE swell 18 feet

2003 Isabel "slot swell" ESE swell 14-15 feet (no drift !)

2007 Andrea NNE swell 11-12 feet all the way down to south boca inlet

  • Yes Halloween 1991 was the biggest I've seen Delray.I was 16 and there was no way I was gonna paddle out in 15-20 foot waves with only surfing waist to head high waves in the past. This would have been nice to see in person. Was the video shot at the north end or south end?My friends and I used to own that beach.GO HOME BROWARDS

  • that looks like a fun paddle out haha. definitley huge for florida

  • 1991 october 31 was much bigger 20 feet washing over A1A

  • Ya,I saw that news footy from that swell.I surfed it in Daytona Beach.I was a sophmore in High School.

  • @tomasleeman

I surfed that day as well, in Delray. I couldnt believe the size. we started the morning south in Boca, heard from someone that it was WAAYY bigger just a little further north, so we hopped in the car and pulled up and watched a 6-8' shorebreak and these gorgeous walls on the outside. I took some pics with a shitty disposal cam, and even with that you can see the size.

  • should have been at south beach. stand up barrels with 500 of your best friends.

  • dude I have never seen waves like that in Florida...head -high, sure but these are huge....Oh yeah on Delray Beach, aren't these breaking on rocks???

  • No,this is a sand beach break.A few miles north there are a few rocks.Reef Road,Palm Beach

  • great waves, certainly not 10-12ft

  • You did a lovely job honey..Mommys proud of you.

  • thats is so amazing i cant belive that shit !!!!!!!

  • dude holy shit is right those waves are fricken gnarly but im not all that impressed cause south beach was solid 8 feet and we dont usuallyt get much from northeast swells

P.S. why werent u catching the monsters out the back?

  • i was just there in march.. damn it looks cool there now..

  • Holly friggin molly indeed! If we could only get one like that every week...;-) I put my shots on magicseaweed too, under deerfield beach. Bring'em on!

  • Buzana's shots smoke yours.

  • Now I see the blurry one he asked you to vote for...because mine had higher ratings than all of his...I don't care that crap but seems like u do...Is that how you treat amateur surf photogs down here? All the nuts roll south very much indeed!

  • Buzana is hardcore dude. I wouldnt say "Bring'em on!" unless I had shots of Pipeline or Chopes.

  • I really didn't mean that in a defying way. I was just stoked to be off work that day and I wanted to see how the other lucky bums like me had wasted their time. I saw Jeff Steven's may 8th shots from South beach and he smokes us all, BIG time...They're not blurry, well lit and with a guy in the tube...Now that's what I call hardcore...shots!

  • Where can I find those (Jeff's)?

  • Just so you know my still shots are from moving streamline video. That is why they are blurry. All my stills are from video on the internet. If you check out magicseaweed and look at all 100 or so pics I posted on there ,you will see the SLR shots are more clear.I gave up the still because I am an Amature photographer and cant afford to shoot in SLR.

  • The stills from this vid are up on magicseaweed under photog. name BUZANA.

  • awesome! gotta post this!

  • Where the hell was everyone at?If there was a better spot than this on May 8,2007 I would like to know.

  • Holy fuc%ing sh!t. Dude!

  • wow i was just in delray in march i wish it was that cool when i was there...
