It's interesting how Clannad and Air are so contrasting. Clannad deals with a more paternal relationship with their daughters as well as the main characters being more lively and interconnected. Air had a very small cast in comparison and was just very..secluded? Misuzu also had a huge maternal relationship with her mother (whose name decides to fade away now, god knows why) and not so much with her father.

I agree. Top emotional OST indeed (I'd liken it to the piano version of God Knows from TMOHS). When I saw the scene with this song in it, even though I haven't even watched the entire series, I cried. The line I remember whenever I hear this song now is "Nagisa...please save Ushio..." Glad things turned out well in the end. That would have been tragic if things had proceeded as foreseen.

Clannad is mostly one of the most emotional story I could ever watch, it had great timing and really dragged people into the emotional story behind it. There wasn't any point that made me cry in season one, but I literally broke down crying in many of the sad moments in season 2 TT_TT so watch it and be amazed

Dont forget Clannad was originally a Visual Novel, that (imo) hits your emotions harder than anime (the melody is from VN OST as well). But the anime was well made as well ;_;

A few years ago my mom and dad had a big fight and I was the only one to wake up in the middle of the night to see it. The year after it our mom our mom just drove away from home for hours because she was mad at dad. The year after she didn't come home for days. And last year our cat died and mom told us, that they're going to divorce

@Kurarayanson I recommend it... it's one of my faves. Nagisa and Tomoya's love is very sweet, but the anime has many heart-wrenching moments as well... The second season was much better than the first in my opinion, but don't just watch the second one 'cos I think the impact will be lessened as you wouldn't really know the characters as much ... hope it helps :)

everyone please understand that although clannad is an anime with all the exaggerated comedy, pretty girls, and a supernatural world it is still an show that displays the pains and joys of reality. it shows a lot of real life problems like discrimination (tomoya hated as a delinquent), sibling problems, gang wars, parental conflicts and pains of losing a loved one. so that's why i believe it's one step above other animes

While Clannad does harbor the themes you mention, the theme above them all is still "Family" (Clannad means "Family" in irish), and that is what i loved the most about it.

You see so many different kinds of "families", and how these stick together through all kinds hardship, being it suicide attempts, gangs or father and son drifting apart. Clannad has taught us all a thing or two about life, and it is certainly one of, if not the best anime i will ever see.

I would bet for most people, though, that they take the "good" things, shelter, food, enough money, as something for granted, which is what is basic.
