Even an AWD vehicle with terrible traction will do terrible in the snow. It's all about traction. 4 SNOW tires and a bit of weight in the trunk will work wonders.

I drive my '92 all year round in arctic conditions. All that is needed are good snow tires and a little practice. On the first generation (1989-1997) 185/60-14 is the ideal size for a snow tire. Almost everyone here has two sets of wheels for their cars, with dedicated winter and summer tires. Going cheap on tires is like going cheap on a parachute, sure you can do it but do you really want to?

You should get a limited slip if you dont have one. My Supra with stock limited slip is great in the snow, and it's 27 years old with blown out shocks.
fwd is easier to drive in the snow but you can lose control with both and if you do lose control then you're better off with a rwd because you can still steer it a bit.
your miata is 50/50 in weight distribution, works just nice in the snow. If you don't use winter tires then miata or not youll be in the same situation. It's a low car, but as long as you dont try to drive in 12inches of snow it will do fine. And the miata is a stable car so it's easy to drive even when slipping sideways. Learn it or buy winter tires CHeers

Maybe. I am pretty sure a miata is worse. Also rear wheel drive, extremely light, tiny wheels... I have seen some mustangs in the snow, but i have a friend who absolutely cannot get his miata anywhere in the snow whatsoever. Mustang GTs may be a bit overpowered for snow driving though but you have the weight benefit. I live in Utah and get pretty snowy winters.
I drove my 91 miata 2 seasons in the snow with bald tires. It was a handful. I never got stuck, even when I was pushing snow with the headlights. I had to keep getting out to brush off the headlights so I could see.

You should move to san jose. where i live in 10 minutes from down town 5 minutes from the country 3mins to the lake and about 1hr to my cabin in pinecrest but i drive around 150mph check out my first video i need to make more but i need to learn how to edit the videos it

Might have had snow tires, but good ones will make all the difference. Ran Nokian Hakapellita 1's in a thin 155 or so. Tore through the snow.
Though, I did get caught at the mall with summer rubber, kumho 712's, in about a centimeter of snow, and it would not move. ha ha ha

I live in Minnesota. I drive a Miata with no ABS or power steering. Some peoples IQ's lose to their fitted baseball cap size. Advice - Blizzack if you're poor, Nitto if you're not. Hopefully you didn't drop out of college. If I can rally race on snow and Ice with the Audi Club, you can drive one mile home in a couple inches of snow. I think this has less to do with gender as it does with intelligence. I won't be the one to point out any relations between the two.

i also own a mx-5 and I live in canada. if you are a sensible person you can drive a mx-5 in any condition. what is the toughest thing about winter driving? traction. good tires help and also some weight on the driving tires is a good thing. now you need to keep your traction by being lighter with the accelerator and the brakes. also, you should know how your car behaves in the snow. there is nothing wrong with going to an empty parking lot and doing some donuts. drive safe drive smart.

@B61pmiata. certain cars are "chick cars", V6 mustangs, Jettas, Rabbits/Cabrio, DEL SOLS (i had one and was sooooooooooooooo much ch fun) and Miatas. sorry its a chick car. i know you can shove a 5.0L in them too and get those Borbet BEAR rims too. If i can find a Miata to drive, i would in a second but with a family, why i sold the Del Sol, i need 4 seaters. Custom built an Isuzu crewcab longbed for a hauler, so im no stranger to customizing ;)

@B61pmiata yeah my wife, when i met her, had a 4x4 Toyota longbed with a cap and 4" lift too....there are expections to everything but certain cars are classified that way and not by u or me......i miss my delsol and i want a miata one day.....and that doesnt make me a chick either ;) lol!! have fun drifting!! we have NASA up here in NJ at the Meadowlands for SCCA type time trials...its FUN!!!

@JgHaverty as far as the demographics go, More 50-up old men buy vettes, 30-40 males cant afford Vettes (or other high HP rwd 2dr sports cars) AND the insurance,and i'm 36. Men are the majority on any auto forum statistically,regardless of age, at least 15:1, especial hands on/racing/mechanical type members. On my SUV forum,of 6700+ members, only 8 or 9 are women. Used miatas are under 10k. An affordable rwd convertible and cheap to insure.

my miata is my winter car up here in Alaska and it does great :)
almost all of my winter cars have been RWD :P once you get used to snow and ice you get good at driving in it :)

Maybe. I am pretty sure a miata is worse. Also rear wheel drive, extremely light, tiny wheels... I have seen some mustangs in the snow, but i have a friend who absolutely cannot get his miata anywhere in the snow whatsoever. Mustang GTs may be a bit overpowered for snow driving though but you have the weight benefit. I live in Utah and get pretty snowy winters.

I drove my 91 miata 2 seasons in the snow with bald tires. It was a handful. I never got stuck, even when I was pushing snow with the headlights. I had to keep getting out to brush off the headlights so I could see.
