i ran a marathon few months back and it was very tough for last 6 miles. i didn't really train as well as i should, but the point is when you know that you are close to finishing your body starts to shut down unless you are just before the finish line.

knowing that this is an ironman it must be 10X as difficult and i feel bad when someone does everything right and they are unable to finish.

If I run a steady pace the whole way through and you run faster but you stop and rest for 10 or 20 minutes yet still make it to the finish line before me, under your own power, you deserve to win because you did the same distance in less time.

i don't really agree with those who think it was wrong that she was passed for third at the end...why should an athlete give up their own personal achievement just to give another a sense of personal achievement, especially to someone who had already accomplished as much as Paula? The woman who got third finished stronger than Paula, and so she deserved third instead of Paula. I think that the only thing the 3rd place woman did wrong was not give a consoling pat on the back as she went by.
