  • THE band that redeems fusion as a genre! A guy (McLaughlin) who'd clearly studied composition and not just guitar solos. From that perspective, Mahavishnu blows EVERYBODY AWAY (YES, INCLUDING THE MILES BANDS WHERE JOHN GOT HIS FIRST INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE), only Zappa's bands getting near to making ultra-complex, basically orchestral music with a rock band set-up w/o devolving into endless, purposeless athleticism.
