  • so epic(>_<)

  • Im 13 and I LOVE all of dave brubeck's work!!

  • Gerry FTW

  • Jazz and classical musicians are the snobbest (is it a word?) in the world. Seems like that if a tune is easy listenable there must be something wrong with it for a lot of them. Brubeck is amazing, a pleasure to listen to in my opinion, and I don't know jazz very well, so he MUST be really good.

  • @BezZo0 Dude, there's a big difference between jazz people and classical people. Us jazz guys know how to improvise. ;)

  • Actually, the best

  • Haha, the audio quality makes the sax players sound like they're flutter-tonguing the entire time!

Actually, that gives me some ideas...

  • The audio quality is bad, but they play so well, that this doesn't matter at all :-)

  • What I find so interesting is that only 5 or 6 years ago these guys were playing in suits and short hair while being filmed in black and white. Such a difference in such a short time. For myself, I prefer the old look. Don't know why. :-) At 2:52 Jack Six looks like he's seriously Jonesing for something!

  • Alan Dawson was Tony Williams' teacher.

  • Gerry Mulligan was Baritone, Eeugene Wright Alto

  • @niwillem it's Paul Desmond on alto. please get it right, as Desmond was with Brubeck forever and they were amazing. :)

  • Desmond was the player,,, jazz goes to college, jazz at

Oberlin early B, was his best by far.

Just like trad jazz, Oliver, Jelly Roll, Kid Ory, Harry Led:

    the days of civilization!!

    We won't forget!!

  • is he growling in altissimo?

    sounds crazy.

  • Huh, Gerry Mulligan sounds harsh and un-Desmond. I don't know how I feel about having them together. They work individually, I guess, but going from smooth to throaty was kinda odd to me. But I've only listened one time so far.

  • @sirjection , do you want there to be no contrast between solosits? i feel like it would be a terrible mistake if two soloists were chosen that sounded the same, especially one after another. that's one reason why they make different instruments. also, gerry mulligan isn't that harsh if you consider that he's playing a baritone sax, not an alto.

  • very good version, i wish the audio rate was better, but i'm not complaining, i guess ain't uploader's fault

  • The audio rate is really horrible. It's a vibrato in it which my ears cannot stand. Nice tune, though.

    TheAkelei

  • keep cool

  • How wonderful to see this. Dave's style is unmistakable - pared back and using a sophisticated crossing of the rhythm (eg 6.19). He manages to use deceptively simple little motifs in his playing that hit the harmony right on the nail. I'm surprised by certain comments below. Some people seem to treat jazz as one big competition!

  • JEASUS I don't believe I'm exposed to this TERIFFIC video thank you so much! desmond! Mulligan! WOW!!

  • So I'm pretty green in jazz but I mean I listen to it avidly and I enjoy stuff like Brubeck, Vince Guarldi Trio and the Play Bach Trio, I dont really enjoy Pat Metheny, though I hear alot of people hating on Brubeck, what exactly do people not like. Personally I enjoy his interpretations a lot but I guess being so green I just have very simple tastes. I'd like to learn any suggestions? Thanks guys

  • I think it has to do with the way he swings somtimes, like in the beggining of this tune its sounds very strange to my ears. For a person who listens to groovey music somtimes brubeck might seem to come up short. That said I dont think he deserves all the flack he gets from "musicains". Btw Pat has some great records check out the Quartet with Brad Meldau thats great, but on a whole I can understand if its not your thing. One guitarist you simply must check out is Bill Frissel, anything by him!!

  • Like Dave or not, but he has his own branch on the tree of jazz and I love it.

  • Comment removed

  • @jovesheerwater why so serious?

  • Paul Desmond' sound and style is so unique and amazing. I think he's different, but as good as John Coltrane. He's like the Duke Ellington of saxes.

  • Paul Desmond's sound and style is so amazing and unique. He might not play as complicated as John Coltrane, but I think he's pretty much just as good. He's like the "Duke Ellington" of saxes.

  • Now I can even enjoy Eric Marienthal's playing, and at first I hated John Coltrane's playing!

  • Gerry Mulligan absolutely devastates in this clip.

Brubeck, on the other hand...I still don't understand his fame in the jazz idiom. In this clip, he comps the chords on the downbeat of each measure (which is lame), and his solo sounds like that of an intermediate jazz student. Not only that, but his arrangement sounds like a 70s game show.

Brubeck's band is wonderful, but I think he has always sounded like a classical musician trying to play jazz. Maybe he should just avoid tunes...

  • in my opinion, I know of many jazz musicians who I have the same opinion that you do of DB. However, I grew up listening to all these jazz musicians and I know that I from then always loved all of their especially lyric playing. You should do yourself a favor and just have an open mind, I have hurt myself many times because my first impression didn't let me realize that some musicians including myself have bad nights for one reason or another.

  • I completely agree with ELPsteel. I am relentlessly amazed by Brubeck's level of recognition. Not only does he comp like an amateur, his choice of voicing is exactly whats on the chart. He never does any substitutions and his rhythmic sensibility isnt even dated, its just tasteless. Good job by the rest of the guys tho....he was definitely lucky to have them around.

  • You're a moron. Take a hint. If you stop posting idiotic, uninformed opinions like this no one will find out.

  • You meen Jazz - Brubeck meens Creativity

  • You meen mean.

  • I think this is a wonderful relic to savor in a mostly post-bop world. He may sound a little square by today's standards, but things like the Mozart-esque theme starting around 7:45 are rare and refreshing to hear.

  • Call him whatever you want.jazz meets classical.classical meets jazz..But do humanity a favor: don't listen to him anymore.

  • cant disagree with that, but listen to Koto song on youtube he plays real nice there.

  • the worst sound quality i've ever heard, besides this , its cool.

  • Dave Brubeck started modern "Smooth Jazz" in my oponion. Like Kenny G. And we all know what HE did.

  • No way. I've never characterized Dave Brubeck as Smooth Jazz. Just because some of his stuff was melodious doesn't mean squat.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the live album "All Together Again For The First Time," his 1972 European Tour. You'll never say it's smooth jazz again.

And, on that album, Alan Dawson laid down one of the most complex solos I've ever heard on Take Five. Just a drummer's drummer.

Meanwhile, Kenny G? Mood music for yuppies.

  • seems strange to watch if you dont like him

  • LMAO YES!!!

  • you really don't like brubeck?

ok: you don't have to listen to him.

    problem solved.

  • Before watching this, i thought Bud Powell & Coleman Hawkins had the best "All the things you are" rendition...but i cant help but say..this is excellent. paul desmond is a beast

  • love ya, Jeru... but the mountain man look? lol... it's great to see these legends playing together.

  • Hahaha! "mountain man look"

Thank you so much for uploading this gem!

  • chi ci darà ancora del jazz con questi grandi musiscisti? per fortuna c'è youtube che ce li farà rivedere ma comunque non li dimeticheremo mai

  • gotta show love to paul desmond. he is the shit on alto

  • Much as I love Dave Brubeck, I'm actually looking for Peter Sellers (funny) version of this song - anybody got it to upload please?

  • Awesome version, five extraordinary musicians.

    Alan Dawson: the teacher's teacher.

  • BACH in JAZZ

  • Jack Six has some big, meaty fingers. Like sausages.

  • yeah he does

  • Gerry Mulligan sounds like he ate Paul Desmond to get that tone. I love it!

  • Actually he's very good, but watch out advertizing your vids everywhere, it's kind of irritating and one some it will have the opposite effect of what you want to reach.

  • Vídeo DUCARALHO. Desde pequenininho eu curto Dave Brubeck e Mulligan. Baita som.

  • I really like this group. I have the album "we're all together for the first time" with this same group, and they are just amazing. I love how Gerry and Paul work so well together.

  • wow , this is cool . never saw Dave with Gery Mulligan before

  • It's difficult to tell from this video, but the drummer is the amazing Alan Dawson, private teacher to Tony Williams, Terri Lyne Carrington, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, Harvey Mason, Keith Copeland, Kenwood Dennard, and most humbly, me. Alan was a true unsung hero of drumming. I cannot say it better than Tony Williams, who said "Mr. Dawson didn't only teach me to play the drums, he taught me how to conduct myself as a musician and as a man. Thank you, Alan Dawson."

  • You are so right.I did a gig with Alan years ago and our conversations where so much more than playing. And he made me sound better than I really was.he also gave me sense that i was on his level...at least for that night.I miss him.

  • My dad studied with Alan, and I was able to meet him when I was very young. From what my father says, Alan was the sweetest and nicest man on earth. You're not the only one who misses him.

  • My dad performed with Alan a few times, too, as a bassist. He always raved about him. Cheers.

  • An ungodly drummer. And, yes, you're right about being an incredibly nice guy.

  • Yeah Brubeck's trousers ~ I think I have a pair like that left from highskewl ~ whew!

  • This is wonderful. That outfit Brubeck's got on! I think I've actually seen pics (perhaps from this concert) as covers of bootleg CDs from Europe. Is there any more info about where and when?

  • I've never seen a film before of Brubeck; Desmond; and Mulligan on stage together. I think that this was from a German TV special made during an early '70's (70-72?) European tour which produced the LP "We're all Together Again for the First Time". A photo of this session appears on the back of the original LP "Bruceck Trio & G. Mulligan Live at the Berlin Philharmonic" from around the same period.

  • The L P "We're Altogether" has 3 tracks from 4th November 1972, but not these. The photos on the back of the "Trio & G M Lp" (November 1970) are not from this session but the front photo maybe???

  • Dug up some info, this is from November 4, 1972 @ Berlin Jazz Festival. And Dave is stylin'!

  • Great, thanks for the info. This is a fantastic find. Prior to Youtube, this kind of treasure was lost to the masses of people who would appreciate it.

  • @Jesster2jazz Hey! Watch out what you say about Dave's outfit or he might club you with that collar!!

  • This is great and rare video. These three great legends together is a fantastic treat. Paul Desmond is even wearing "The Suit".
