Whitney tor it up too!!! Got to give her that one.Donna ruled the air waves in the 70's and this song has such great words in it that we all have that one that this song belongs to.you go Donna!!!!!
no matter how many times i watch this-Donna's version is sooo much better than whitneys because Donna has sooo much vocal control and clarity to her voice, her voice is just rich and full, whitney just did'nt put any feeling into the song, i'm sure she could have if she wanted to.
DONNA SUMMER, was everything that Beyonce' is today...she is the one that, in my mind, is the direct link, to the success of someone like Beyonce'...Tina is A VERY close second. But when you think about how Beyonce' is produced, managed, promoted, and has all the best producers waiting in line to work with her, Donna was EXACTLY that kind of performer in the 70's...IT DIDNT GET ANY HOTTER THAN HER. Beyonce', owes Donna a debt of gratitude, definitely.
Regardless of what people say or think about artists and the various ways they convey a song, this one will go in the record books and the one that raised the bar so high that most artists now need studio magic to achieve what Donna did with just a microphone. This was just so amazing. She is just absolutely amazing. Love or hate her, you can't deny her gift of song. I am so grateful for it. Thank you for posting this piece of living art.
I don´t know if this version is better than Whitney´s or not but one thing is for sure: It´s 1000 times better than Beyonce´s. I still can´t conceive why some people try so hard to put her on the same level Donna, Whitney and others are. Sorry but she will never be. Those crazy fans who don´t know about vocals... I can´t handle it anymore!!!
Look up the meaning of the word "diva". The vast majority of singers and women called "divas" these days...simply AREN'T! They don't qualify. Donna does. She's also one of the most beautiful women to ever grace a stage. As for Divas; Aretha certainly qualifies. I ain't so sure about Whitney though.
You people make me laugh. I love Whitney, i really do but i just don't see what all the fuss is about. Even with the horrible audio in this vid Donna sounds so much better. Whitney needs to scream & yell to belt, Donna just belts. Yes it's a matter of opinion but i've listened to so many other covers of this song & with all these other so called divas out there no one can touch this like Donna or Whitney for that matter!!!
I really like this version, Donna's incredible ( and beyonce is not the Donna of today because she cannot sing like Donna), but Whitney's version of this song is my favorite

im sorry because I know im going to get a bunch of thumbs down on this ; i love Whitney and Donna Summer but Whitney literally murders this song ( in an incredible way) which Donna could never do , Donna's is common .
Whitney cannot sing this song now. We all know that her voice is shot to hell. Donna never gives a bad performance. Even at 60 years young. Sorry LERi1991
I don't see it. There was never anything like Whitney. I would say she was the Beyonce of the 70s or better yet....Beyonce is the Donna Summer of today.
Why don't you just appreciate Ms Summers version and not compare. One is not better then the other just different. Both are two unique version of the one.
I'm so sick and tired of people trying to compare this woman's voice to any other female artisit who's ever sang contemporary music. It is certainly NOT a fact. It is YOUR opinion (matter of taste)and were all glad to hear your say. U want real power, technique and belting from her, listen to her rendition of "Impossible Dreams"
BOTH divas truly have great voices, and great qualities about them and need NOT be compared. Summer to ME has way better control and versatility. She SANGS like this whether it's R&B, Pop, Dance, Country, Gospel, Rock, u name it and in multi languages, who else does that?
thats a ridiculous statement, countless gold/platinum albums, countless top 40 singles, a string of million selling singles, an academy and numerous grammy awards, she charted throughout the 80s her last big dance/pop hit being 1989s "this time i know its for real"....true not many have survived, but donna did.. the others didnt survive because of the late1979 early 80s disco backlash, which by the way, was only in the USA
This was fxcking incredible. I wish i had a CD audio of this and i would play it to death. i have another version of donna singing this song but this is definately the most beautiful version that she did.

Donna sang up a storm here no 2 ways about it ...opinions opinions we all have... Whitney blew this away and her voice is not at all as NASAL as Ms. Summer...Christina blew it away with Herbie too...Nancy Wilson tears it up in her most original jazzy bluesy style...and Donny Hathaway must be so pleased that his song has stood the test of time and is soo very much a classic...;-))
Artist do this all the time...Alycia Keys, MaDonna, Patty LaBelle, Beyonce...Please get use to it. I know you want to sing the lyrics with them or there's a certain phrase you like, but "lyrics" aren't written in stone these days...there is ROOM FOR ABLIBING,SORRY!
Why are you apologizing on behalf of these artists? Regardless, I know for a fact alot of these covers are sang differently in terms of lyrics, to cover up the fact that they forgot them (usher's) or, can't sing that particular note/range as well. Not to mention it can be a slap in the face for the original writer of the song, who felt something when writing those particular words. I wouldn't take that away, especially with such a beautifully written song like this. Thats in my opinion.
Elliot Yammin? are you crazy, I heard his version and its not bad, but I just think that this one and whitneys are so unique and rich, but completely different at the same time. I just dont put christina and Elliot in the same league
Every time I listen to this, I am reminded of the incredible talent of this woman - the amazing depth and range of her unbelievable voice. Too bad songs like this never became part of her popular repertoire and too bad most people only connect her with disco. Most of her best stuff were her ballads, which often when unnoticed in the popular media. She is truly the most incredible female vocalist of all time. Thank God for Donna Summer!
One of the best modern pop voices! Donna Summer possessed both sensuality and purity in her sound, with absolutely beautiful and rich coloring in her voice. I believe she was capable of singing most anything during this era. What a powerhouse!
Thanks for this post....Who knew that Ms.Summer could sing like this....not all about the disco right....???:...FABULOUS...I think\suspect that Ms.Houston was influenced by this version....some tones and arrangements are too obvious....:-)
can't decide which is my favorite, whitney's or Donna's i like both for different reasons. But come on beyonce and them can sing, but its not just about singing an nice note, its about having a voice thats unique and can come through a record

Donna Summer has some great hits, but she does nothing for this song. lol. Is it just me, everytime I hear a ballad from her, I keep expecting her to segue into Last Dance!
Donna did a great job on this song. In my opinion, her voice was sometimes overshadowed by her music, or at least her style. Many people were so into the beat, that they paid her vocals no attention, but she was always SANGIN', no doubt. On another note, I have seen Beyonce in concert, and she can sing too. People from different generations often feel as though the singers they grew up with are the best, and often put today's singers down. (Not pointing any fingers. Just making a point.)
How could anybody be stupid enough to compare Donna Summer to the talentless young twits of today-such as Beyonce and et-al!!!! Also, although Whitney does have a beautiful voice she is not at all as proliphic as Donna Summer. I just saw Donna in concert in Bethel Woods New York. She was phenominal-I got goose flesh listening to her!Her voice has an incomparable quaity to it- a gift from nature, God, Jesus or whatever you will!
I would give almost anything to have a good audio of this song. Just the absolutely BEST. So much soul...thank your Buddah, your jesus, Wow! Was this from her Live and More concert or Bad Girls?
This is it for this song: Not available on any recording she's done. It's a pity she doesn't release an album of songs like this. It would be huge. That voice!
Donna tore this song up!(wish the audio were a bit more clearer though)non the less, this proves that she clearly was capable of singing more than just"disco" at that time in her career.
Best singer ever to grace the earth. I am so happy I am living her era. It is a sin to compare Beyonce w/ Donna. Beyonce has no voice the studio enhances her voice.
Love you Donna and always will. I thank Jesus for you! It is so nice to see you talking about Him. See you in Oakland. Your new album is great!
Best singer EVER. Her voice touches my soul like no other. She's an angel from heaven so please be happy that you can experience her comeback in 2008. There won't ever be another Donna Summer. She's more than a legend, she is a goddess!!!
It does not get better than this ! Yes, there are other female singers that i could mention, but why ?. No one can touch Donna when it comes to her artistry, and her real, down home persona, NO ONE ! As other posters have noted, this clip gives me chills. As Larry Flick from Billboard magazine ou it, "There Are Divas, THEN there is Donna Summer". Donna, I Love You So Much!
There are singers that are called legendary and then there are those that are legendary. This woman is increadible. She doesn't show off. She just gives the songs she sings a life that makes it worth listening to. Thanks for sharing this amazing piece of artistry that gives me chills.
Donna Summer and Diana Ross were the only 2 black women filling stadiums at that time. They both opened the doors for all the other black divas since. Singing a gospel song in a hooker dress and wig is totally HOT!
Read her autobiography 'Ordinary Girl' and learn more about this remarkable woman. She has a strong spirit and a voice to match. FOREVER DONNA - WE LOVE YOU !!!!!
such a powerful voice and she shows up beyonce and xtina's febble efforts and she aint even that known for her voice. Whitney's still the best though.
That's really nice of you to say.... I love Patti but she screaches sometimes when she gets worked up- a little much for me, but her fans adore her too.
I had an audio version of this by Donna that was even better than this ..... she tears this song up! Its hard to explain her voice to some people because to really understand the magic, there is nothing like hearing Donna's voice LIVE in concert. POWERFUL lungs with that amazing tones .... she'll give you chills.
She sure has a powerful voice. It is very rare a singer who can sound just as good as she/he does on a recording. Check out her rendition of CELEBRATE ME HOME also available here.
Actually..... this is right before that..... I can tell (dont ask me how).... gospel has always been a part of her, she was raised on it, and sang gospel and could rock out before renewing her faith just as well as she could after renewing her faith. In doing so, it saved her life, she believes, and so for that I am grateful.
I've never seen her sing live. I'm happy i started with a cover song like this. She's great and def. manages to give it her own style. love it. I wish I was alive when she was big. We got whitney instead. She da bomb too. ha
Donna paved the way, as did others like Diana Ross, for black women to be respected in mainstream music and to be treated just as well as white counterparts. Also, Donna is the first black female artist to win a grammy in the Rock N Roll category. The styles of Whitney and Donna are very different- both sing beautifully. My favorite thing about Donna is how powerful her lungs are- blows me away sometimes. Glad you like her- we love Whitney too.
I absolutely love reading/seeing when folks who only know the hits of Donna Summer have the realization that there is a huge powerhouse of a voice behind the woman as well. I think it's awesome because since she has continued working all of these years, that instrument has just become more & more developed. Everyone knows the dance stuff - but Donna can belt a ballad with the best of them. Try & check out "If There Is Music There" from her Live & More Encore. Astounding!
i wish there were a decent recording of this...

Thats in my opinion.

whats up with the slight distortion in the audio? i love ALL versions of this song. RAY wrote us a timeless classic.

i love whitney and christina but for me this and elliot yamin's are the best cover versions of this song.
ch1ch120 3 years ago
Elliot Yammin? are you crazy, I heard his version and its not bad, but I just think that this one and whitneys are so unique and rich, but completely different at the same time. I just dont put christina and Elliot in the same league
Bahia82 3 years ago 2
i agree. Whitney's is so unbelievably good.... srsly one of whitney's best performances, and definitely in a category of its own.
this one is quite remarkable too

She really belts this one out! INCREDIBLE!

Thank God for Donna Summer!
rcli59 3 years ago 4
One of the best modern pop voices! Donna Summer possessed both sensuality and purity in her sound, with absolutely beautiful and rich coloring in her voice. I believe she was capable of singing most anything during this era. What a powerhouse!
mikel3363 3 years ago 3
Thanks for this post....Who knew that Ms.Summer could sing like this....not all about the disco right....???:...FABULOUS...I think\suspect that Ms.Houston was influenced by this version....some tones and arrangements are too obvious....:-)
GO Ms.GAINES...uh....Summer....:-))))

can't decide which is my favorite, whitney's or Donna's i like both for different reasons. But come on beyonce and them can sing, but its not just about singing an nice note, its about having a voice thats unique and can come through a record
Bahia82 3 years ago 4
I love it when Donna pulls that "little" black gospel girl out of her soul. Girl was meant to sing.

This is it for this song: Not available on any recording she's done. It's a pity she doesn't release an album of songs like this. It would be huge. That voice!
bergenagain 3 years ago
Donna tore this song up!(wish the audio were a bit more clearer though)non the less, this proves that she clearly was capable of singing more than just"disco" at that time in her career.
stevenk79 3 years ago 2
Best singer ever to grace the earth. I am so happy I am living her era. It is a sin to compare Beyonce w/ Donna. Beyonce has no voice the studio enhances her voice.
Love you Donna and always will. I thank Jesus for you! It is so nice to see you talking about Him. See you in Oakland. Your new album is great!

Donna, I Love You So Much!
krapug1 4 years ago 2

I had an audio version of this by Donna that was even better than this ..... she tears this song up! Its hard to explain her voice to some people because to really understand the magic, there is nothing like hearing Donna's voice LIVE in concert. POWERFUL lungs with that amazing tones .... she'll give you chills.

This was a point in her life when she became a born again Christian. You can tell. She is one of a kind
beugene81 5 years ago
Actually..... this is right before that..... I can tell (dont ask me how).... gospel has always been a part of her, she was raised on it, and sang gospel and could rock out before renewing her faith just as well as she could after renewing her faith. In doing so, it saved her life, she believes, and so for that I am grateful.
SWSimpson 4 years ago

SWSimpson 4 years ago
I absolutely love reading/seeing when folks who only know the hits of Donna Summer have the realization that there is a huge powerhouse of a voice behind the woman as well. I think it's awesome because since she has continued working all of these years, that instrument has just become more & more developed. Everyone knows the dance stuff - but Donna can belt a ballad with the best of them. Try & check out "If There Is Music There" from her Live & More Encore. Astounding!
kennyone2006 5 years ago
Pete bellote and giogio moroder always made her sing in falsetto,to bolster their disco productions. But as we can she she can really sing.
