Well, I'll repeat what you said... "Helens' has no heart..." Helen is unable to sing with no heart. That is my point. She said in an interview that she wanted to speed it up because it dragged. Because of her incite, she had a No.1 Adult hit and a No. 15 pop hit. Mr. Roberts will always be known as a one hit wonder who sang the forgettable "Rocky".
@ReddyRockedThe70s Exactly, I said her version of the song has no heart, I did NOT say her voice has no heart. I actually like some of her other songs, but not her version of this one. Just as I don't like "Rocky" as much as I like others that Austin has done.
I love this song - i lost the 45 in a bad storm we had back in the day! I've searched and searched for this song by him as well as the flip side of this 45 record! THANKS! Now...where can I purchase both songs as a MP3 to place on my iPod?
Great song. In high school we used to sing this with I Believe in Music as a counter point. Same Chords with similar sound and feel. I had a version of Aileen Quinn, the movie Annies singing this too!
I mentioned this elsewhere here, but if you dig Austin, he has a Yahoo group and will GLADLY discuss ANY records he was involved with, from the Virginia Wolves on ABC on down to co-writing Lee Greenwood's smash country hit "IOU".
This was a Top 10 song in my region of the country in early 1973. Wonderful song. I was not so thrilled with the Helen Reddy version. This was Austin's song and always will be for me. He had another great one later in 1973 called "One Word" that sadly didn't chart nationally.
The applause at the end seems to symbolize that the father's son had finaly became a singing star and made an audience happy as indicating by the cheering.
His father insipred him to sing, and when the father died, the son pushed himself to be the best singing star he could be.
This song came in the summer of 1973.For the past 35 years,I cannot even see it in any record store again. The only version I can get is Helen Ready but I don't like. Thank so much. Ican hear it here again...Fantastic!
I can't decide if my turntable was playing just a tad slow when I recorded it. I thought it was just a little bit faster but I could be wrong. It had been years since I listened to it.
Thank you for this song. I heard it over in my country when it came on the scene. Sad to say, it was hard to get the "single" during that time. Helen Reddy's version is not as good as Austin.
Part of the reason nothing's posted is that the song has never been reissued on CD. I've known Austin since 2003, and several labels have wanted to do something with his back catalog but something always goes wrong (cross licensing issues, missing masters - think Private Stock - et al). It's sad because the demand is clearly there.
AWESOME! You're The first one I and many know who placed this avaialable on the web!! ThankS!!! woohhoooo! it's been yeears since i heard this version.
Can someone please tell me where to find Robert's version of "Pretty Mary Sunlight"

This is good.... but Helen's has more oomf and her voice is amazing. Sorry. :(
ReddyRockedThe70s 8 months ago
@ReddyRockedThe70s True, but Helen's has no heart, just a commercial sound and beat to fill her bank account.

@TimothyQStanton
If you think Helen Reddy's voice "has no heart" then I'll just leave it at that.
ReddyRockedThe70s 8 months ago
@ReddyRockedThe70s That's not what I said. But since your reading comprehension skills aren't so good, it's better I don't try explaining.

I like this slower version of Austin Roberts. Helen Reddy's version is great, but it's so fast.

Wow, I cannot believe how similar this sounds to "The Man in Me" by Bob Dylan. Still good though.

I think the speeds right on, helen Reddy's version was more uptempo

This is definately the right tempo. Austin sings it with more feeling and passion.
