All is well until the sobering rant at the end, I used to live there in '97 and there weren't too many drug problems then. Despite the openness of the transit system, if you snuck on, you always had to worry about the random ticket checkers on your trip. Paranoia was not worth a free ride. As for the bathrooms, I truly hated that, the best you could do was squat in the bushes at Broadwas station or be bold and use the elevator. Not good for a drunken night on the town though. Shape up Vancouver!
They plan on putting the homeless in emergency shelters for two weeks during the Olympics, so you will not see the true face of Vancouver. The majority of funding for transit does not come from fares but from advertising along with gas and property tax.
i bought into vancouver's best-city "advertisements," and watched your other video, (yes, it is terrible). but i was hoping to see some of the nasty criminals that you said were frequently on the train, not that i'm trying to say there aren't any.
The truth is that, when I shot the video on the skytrain, I had just returned to YVRtown after many years of absence & was still buying in to the big lie. I really wasn't looking to find negative images of anything or anyone! It was a year or two later that I posted this video and, as you can see, my feelings about YVRtown had drastically changed. One more thing - when I shoot video, I try not to focus on people I don't know. Somehow, I consider it to be an invasion of their privacy.
I take the skytrain five days a week across the expo line. There are occasional thugs and "druggies" but you won't come across them on a regular basis. If anything, I see more rowdy youth than anything else. My experience with addicts on the train isn't much beside them lecturing me on their personal views of society. The security system consists of emergency phones and buttons that calls up security personnel in the next station. I'd love to see turnstiles and a better security presence though.
Thanks for your thoughts. You sound very level headed. I tend to be much more cynical in that I think the behaviour of those "rowdy youth" is caused by the "crystal meth" and/or "BC Bud" that they using "for recreation" and that it won't take long for them to fall down the slippery slope and become full blown addicts.
I've been to Vancouver for only 1 month... love the city, the skytrain... but in 1 month.. I saw a incommensurate amount of aggressions, druggies, inside the skytrain and at skytrain stations and myself was attacked by druggies, as one of my friend just as I came out at my station going back home... Something has to be done.
the BC transit police were always kind and the Sky train employees which DO monitor the stations were always helpful and more then happy to carry on polite conversation . they could add a few features to the sky train system bathrooms WOULD be nice. they COULD go to RFID chips in their passes like Atlanta did. and use that to control access to areas . OVER ALL
I'd love on-site 24/7 security, washrooms, etc. Are people going to want the maintenance and operation of these entities reflected in their fares and property taxes? Probably not. Maybe just suck it up and deal with it instead of bashing something you don't fully understand. Mass transportation is NOT perfect. Driving, biking, or walking might be better suited for you.
Why don't YOU "suck it up" (as you canadian pig-cows like to say) and realize that not everyone can afford the time it takes to bike or walk to work/school and not everyone can afford cars. Gawd! What a fucking asshole!!! Maybe your nic should be "canadapigcow."
I Would like to mention that some cities are implementing a fare-free transit system. Island Transit in Whidbey Island, Wash. It's a serious operation with 56 buses and 101 vans. Ridership tops a million a year. Its operating budget is $8,392,677 -- none of it from fares, all from a 0.6 percent sales tax collected in Island County.
If you hate the SkyTrain so much, then I advise you to not ride it. There are pros and cons to any comparable rapid transit system in N America (BART, Metro, NYC and Chicago subway, etc.). It may surprise you to know that there is relatively the same or more crime, vandalism, vehicular malfunctions, and fare evasion in other systems.
Where do you get your vast knowledge of these impressive sounding statistics? What gives you any right to give someone "advise" because they happen to perceive things differently from you? Go fuck yourself, idiot.
great song.. that looks like a sick form of transportation
