A lady who played this instrument when it was first invented had a psychosis or nervous breakdown or something; this gained publicity and is the basis of the insanity/death rumor.
If there was any lead in the glass then it wouldn't have likely been enough to cause problems. At the time lead was used in many medicines so going by that the bit that would be transferred through contact with the instrument would be miniscule in comparison and thus unlikely to be a cause of lead poisoning.
I think that the idea of the instrument killing people was made up out of a dislike of something about it, perhaps the people who started the idea disliked Ben?
To Sabrazille. The lead in glass is not poisonous, glass is completely nonporous and doesn't let any lead out. In fact, look into it, there is darn near no glass today that isn't lead based, in fact, the finer the crystal, the higher the lead content. You are wrong, no one died ever from lead in glass. No one thinks thats what happened to mozart but you..

whoa! i cant believe he blew that huge bubble trash then played with it like its some harmless selifane....i guess they werent hip to glass inhalation and the side effects back then. man was bad ass regaurdless.
elrojazz...i hope you realize...the original maker of the glass harmonica is benjamin franklin. i highly doubt he put gold in lay on an invention that threatened his life(after playing it people accused his instrument of being cursed)
Actually, at that time, pretty much everything had lead. Cooking pots, plumbing, and even medical prescriptions. Lead is hardly soaked by skin. It is rather ingested or inhaled.
Even though crystal contains lead, it is only rumorous to think it is the cause of the disappearance.
It is most likely because people associated events with the instrument. And being called "Voices of Angel", the glass armonica is subject to being referred to Hell as well when something happens.
Additionally, the paint was inside the cup which was not in direct contact of the fingers. Having the paint outside would render the instrument to be unplayable as it is a matter of friction between the wet fingers and the glass.
The main reason why Glass Organs/Harmonica's became obsolete is because anyone that played the Glass Organ would die a few years later. The instrument was thought to cursed or sound to close to the sound of Angles or the voice of GOD. Any one who played the instrument would feel GOD's wrath.
Unknowingly the reason why every one was die-ing is because the original maker of the glass Organ would decorate the organ with gold inlay which contained Lead. Thus the players fingers would soak in the leaded gold and get Lead poisoning and die. Thanks Alan Alda!

People died because there was lead in the glass they used back then. Some people think that's what actually killed Mozart.
