Let me expand upon that: Roger Ebert is a hack because he has the gall to give a film like Blade Runner a negative review... but it doesn't end there. If a critic doesn't like a film, that doesn't make him a bad critic. First Ebert dissed Blade Runner when it came out, and then, after the film became a classic of the genre, not wanting to look like a fool, he went back and changed his mind and wrote a good review for it. He also liked Dogma (vomit) and hated A Clockwork Orange. Ebert is a hack.
"Today's best comedians—Eddie Murphy, Danny McBride, Larry the Cable Guy, Seth Rogen, Will Farrell and Steve Carell—can still learn from W.C. Fields..."
A few years back i noticed all the blurbs for shitty flicks had the name of Earl Dittman-Wireless Magazine under them. Im forced to wonder if he really exists
I'm rapidly becoming a fan of Brit critic Mark Kermode. I don't always agree with the movies he hates., but it's always interesting listening to his pros and cons on films, including moments where he go ape wild on movies that absolutely infuriate him.
Thanks, Proust. You're syntax inspires me to write back and say this: If I went to any high school in the US, sat down at a table of teenage idiots crowing about their latest cineplex experience, this mess would be on par with the Spill.com experience. Soooooooo down to earth, whatever the fuck that means.
Love you guys, discovered your show not too long ago, and I'm already hooked. Got you guys on facebook, and I'm absolutley rabid for more. Keep up the awesome work, guys.
Dudes, I was a fan of the facebook page. I love your show. But my facebook account was recently disabled. I don't feel like setting up another email account just to get back on facebook, so this kinda blows.
@ethansloan Sorry to hear about this. My advice is for you to join my forum at AVManiacs com. I'm over there and you can chat with like-minded people. Come join us! In the meantime, check out the latest video I posted on our channel. I think you'll dig it!
@equestrianstar4 >> I actually loved his comment about the MPAA with this movie: Passion, according to Ebert, hits the nail on the head that the MPAA will never get a NC-17 for violence alone. He said, "If this movie had been about anybody but Jesus, it would've got an automatic NC-17."
I really enjoy your reviews because you guys can review any film, whether they are b-movies or a-movies and be open-minded about it. I also love movies and I thing every movies is unique in its way. Like I tell my friends, if there werent bad movies, there wouldnt be good movies.
I just read White's District 9 review. Though a bit of a firebrand, I kinda agree with what he's sayin. But I didn't need him to tell me the movie was boring when I first saw it. I thought it could've been a better movie if it was about something else. The segregation angle was too heavyhanded imo.
@8pasta: Uncle Bob I was a passionate reader of Fangoria in the 80s, so much so I had subscribed to the mag and even endured the long shipping times having lived overseas at the time. So it's an honor to have you on board, sir.
I think I just learned how to pronounce Manohla Dargis, I shared a trip to the Alaskan set of John Carpenter's The Thing with Hoberman...a weird junket just for Fangoria and the Voice
@8pasta Thanks Uncle Bob, I was a huge fan of your work at Fango and I'm honored that you took the time to watch the show and comment. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the other shows and leave some comments.
Chris Gore seems like a complete douchebag. Some of you guys met him. What do guys think of him? Medved wrought The Golden Turkey Awards with his brother. Loved that book and it put Ed Wood on the map. But god he sucked on Sneak Previews with Jeffrey Lyons.
I fucking hate Paulene Kael. Her idea of what was god and bad was so arbitrary. At times she attempted to be Dorathy Parker, and say that she could write a better movie. But as we all know, she couldn't. All she did was bitch about some of the greatest movies ever made. I'm not saying she had to like Badlands, but she should have come up with some valid critisisms instead of just calling it pretentious.
Very entertaining (thumbs up from me) and great to hear your opinions with no holding back. This show is a definite winner! A couple of critics I like that weren't mentioned are Mark Kermode and The Filthy Critic. Here in Australia we have a weekly movie show called At the Movies hosted by Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton which is quite good and a respectable show. Anyway, I like all you guys, thanks a lot and best wishes!
Great, great, great episode. I feel so bad that At the Movies is getting cancelled - I never saw Siskel and Ebert on TV being in Australia but knew who they were through Cinemania and other places. So I was so pleased when ABC put all their old reviews online in a very impressive video archive - I hope it stays online...
I liked the Film Critics episode. I've always enjoyed Roger Ebert's work, I don't always agree with him (esp when it comes to his politics) but I dont let that get in the way of enjoying how he looks at movies. I wish we had more critics like him who, as Edwin said, have the balls to stand up for what they say about something, even if you dont agree with them all the time.
Awesome to see my Top 5 critic list on the thread: very cool.
I really enjoyed this episode; very insightful.
Ironic that Michael points out that he wants the show to be the next AT THE MOVIES. I've already made that comparison, although I call it Ebert and Roeper.
You guys do realize that At the Movies is back in production. It now has A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips, who are in my opinion, the best team to review since Siskel and Ebert - because they are actually intelligent, have a wide breadth of film knowledge and are actually entertaining to watch when they disagree. Let's not even start on the whole Lyons-Mankiewicz version. I didn't even particularly care for Roeper either.
Anyway, you guys do a good show .... keep up the good work.
I love hearing you guys tear Spielberg apart even though I consider myself a fan of his.
As for Ben Lyons, I'm with you 100%, I honestly felt sorry for Ben Mankiewicz because you could tell he really tried and to have that jackass Ben Lyons there was just killing him.
@ZombiesAteMyArm. I think Giliam it best: Spielberg is more successful. His films make much more money. But they're comforting, they give you answers, always, the films are answers, and I don't think they're very clever answers. Spielberg and the success of most films in Hollywood, I think, is down to the fact that they're comforting, they tie things up in nice little bows, gives you answers, even if the answers are stupid, they're answers.
I did feel bad for him. It looked like Mankiewicz was a passenger on a sinking ship and he knew it. I felt if he had another co-host, he would have been much better off. Lyons got where he is because of his father. That's the only reason he was on that show.
@cinefiles >> Yeah, at least Mankiewicz looked like he was at least trying to give actual reviews. Lyons was just terrible. Has nothing to say about movies.
Roger Ebert started writing for the Chicago Sun Times in 1967. He was already writing film reviews in college. I know he was writing about sports, but he wrote his first film review while working on a degree in journalism; that review was for my personal favorite movie, La Dolce Vita. This led him on a path towards film criticism. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was 1970.
Awesome show guys! I'd love to see more episodes like this discussing the film industry and the politics around it.
By the way I like the Spill guys quite a bit but I think that they're on the other end of the film critc spectrum and serve a different audience all together. They're more fast and loose while you guys are more astute and refined. Nevertheless you guys deserve to be seen by more people on Youtube, especially the true film lovers out there.
powerful stuff..somebody really doesn't like Armand White (whoever he might be)! Spielberg isn't as bad as you say though, surely..? love Duel, Jaws, Schindler's List, Amistad, whichever of the Indiana Jones films he did..and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of my favourite films. slight double standards Mr. Foltz, i have seen you recommend several films on the basis of nice tits, etc., and i'm not saying you were wrong to do so. very interesting, thanks again.
I love the show, too and I hope to see more 20+ minute videos from you guys. I appreciate the effort you all put into all the episodes.
Jeff: Please speak up more or stay home. Jeff always seems out of place in the midst of a discussion. I don't know if its because he sits next to Michael who tends to overpower with his presence (which is good since I like him alot, no homo). But Jeff, please speak your mind some more, man. Eric and Edwin are always on point, nothing new.
just want to let you guys know that I love the show, and please don't try and conform to making 5 to 10 minute videos. To be honest, your show wouldn't be as great if you didn't have enough time to basically talk shit to each other lol. Keep up the great job, can't wait for the next video.
