  • A Beautiful Song ...

  • wes anderson brought you here

  • A rather premature ending here : This fellow was Indian born but looks like a frog & like so many Frenchmen of old, he got chopped in the end.

  • zo voel ik me moedder

  • Is this what the fucking French Revolution fought for??

  • PENIS

  • where is the full length version of this from the dame progamme?

  • Thanks Skrillex!!!

  • eden kane is is brother inreal life i recall

  • eden kanes brother in real life

  • he's got the most beautiful eyes

  • Hey, he wasn't a one hit wonder- he also had a hit with "Frozen Orange Juice'..plus he kept working a a sing/gutatist at least up until a few years ago.

    Anyway it's a great song..a classic.

  • Sasha Distel RIP..

  • "He sent you a racehorse for christmas and you keep it just for fun, for a laugh ha ha ha" I wish! Brings back memories this song, thanks :)

  • Gänsehautfeeling!

  • This guy's a bit of a creep.

  • @Ultraspur You sound like youre a bit of a asshole.

  • @pushkint1 You sound like you're a large Yanky cunt.

  • @Ultraspur You sound like youre a moron northerner, and a nob 'ead to boot.

  • @pushkint1 used to play this when i was banging your tart of a mother....she enjoyed us northerners up her

  • @petertownend Hey peterwankertownend, youre not showing me much gratitude for getting men for your mother and sister, those well known whores.

  • This guy's a bit of creep.

  • thanx for the info

nice to hear they are still making music

  • heh I feel very adventurous today any Guys want to have an adventure

  • @jessica01412 Yeah, ok then.

  • I saw Peter Sarstedt perform this with his brother Clive, 2 weeks ago in my local bar near Bedar Almeria Spain. Awesome and seeing Clive again tonight with his playing partner Maurice

  • Klasika.

  • hotel chevalier..<3

  • he had 2 hits and multiple singles and albums... not a one hit wonder.

  • Not a 'one hit wonder' - frozen orange juice was a big top ten hit in the UK.

The The brothers came from Pollards Hill, Norbury, Croydon.

Peter 'retired' from the music industry because of issues to do with 'nervousness about performing' in public.

  • Whenever this was played on the radio at the time, he was always anounced as Eden Kane's brother. How irritating for him.

  • @johnniescarlett who is Eden Kane? Please excuse my ignorance.

  • @aaronmonkeylover He had a hit called "Boys Cry" in the early sixties.

  • ouch! that cut off ending hurt!

  • great video. love the crowd shot at 1.47. geezer in audience amazingly bored and rigid.

  • i just love this song...

  • Peter Sarstedt får en att minnas -69 i malmö city.

  • Em where is the end of the song, just streamed for nought, thanks

  • peter sarstetd robinsarstetd and eden kain brothers. what a sad story but what a great song to come from it

  • I DO LIKE THE WORDS, GREAT .... WONDER WHAT INSPIRED IT?

  • @1:37 and the crowd goes wild, lol

  • I called my daughter after this song because I love it. She's Marie Claire O'Connor and I love her very very much. 'Her loveliness goes on and on, yes it does...' Can't say I didn't give you a great name! xxx

  • I think this bigoted faced singer is rather psychotic about love itself rather than madly in love with her/him hehehe

  • Those were the days ... :)

  • 1:42 those chicks look stoned.

  • so cheeeeeeeezy

  • the song cuts off! boo!

  • I think Zizi Jeanmaire was a French ballet dancer, If you Google it you maybe able to find some more.

    Peter :O)

  • Who was the dancer Zee Zee Jeanmare? (at least that's how it sounds) -:)

  • Comment removed

  • @johnalexandermunro

    zizi jeanmaire

  • what a cool moustache

  • Yeah, I thought that even though it is a bit village people and if you were wearing one and were gay I think more can be read into it, but I might be wrong, just another urban myth.

  • I had to idea Sarstedt was born a Delhi wallah. The song: the branding - I don't think any 60s song had so many brand names squezed in to 3 minutes.

Sarstedt reminds me of the late Queen front man Freddy Quicksilver

    Tohtori Juhani

    Bangkok wallah

    CarSanook (dot com)

  • he's synching to the record...

  • wheres the rest of the song, dude?

  • it was all i got of the song, but have the full version in my favourites

  • @clownassasin Fantastic song. He was in Thunderbirds, he played Brains' father in 3 episodes. Some nice looking chicks in the audience, probably minging old hags by now [sorry ladies, no insult intended]. A classic song, I love it.

  • @dantakeoff I agree with you, it's terrible when they chop songs off.

  • you forgot lebanon - written about the troubles there in the 70s - what's changed eh?

I was at the Guildford festival in the late 80s and a guy was murdering thi song.I was only after 2 minutes I realised it was Sarsted himself

still - he wrote it and i didn't, and I wish so much I had

  • Comment removed

  • ive listened to this about 23 times now lol! im sad, but its good aint it?

  • Couple of his other songs were "Frozen Orange Juice" which got plenty of airtime here in Oz. Also "Take off your clothes" which didn't get airtime! He was known as "The singer of Dirty Ditties". I enjoyed them back then and still do now.

  • Some one a lot better than most of todays so called stars, singing a timeless classic

  • Comment removed

  • always liked but creeped out at the same time by this song, much pefered his brother robins song - My resistance is Low, maybe just cos 1 of the first songs i remember hearing a lot on the radio as a kid

  • Look its FREDDIE PRINZE THE FIRST

  • me recordará a ti ... :-)

  • Beautiful song. THOSE WERE THE TIMES

  • Jackie kennedy

  • so who was "Marie Claire" ????

  • Sophia Loren was actually Marie Claire

  • i was playing in a local rock band called impact when this was number 1 and decided to perform it one saturday night reading the lyrics from the sheet music i`d bought that day..it was the first and only time i ever had a standing ovation in 35yrs of semi pro playing in pubs n clubs pmsl....

  • Shame you cut it short at the end..any chance of reposting the full song?

  • Really a lovely song ....I can feel his sadness and longing for a lost dream he lived once

  • Why does it not finish?

    Bit wierd!

  • just love the song and fullstop

  • probably one of the best peices of music and lyrics ever . by a master

  • Classic! What a great track. I am 28 and prefer the 60's music to any other decade. The beatles (my favourite) are the best band ever and released some quality tunes but many one hit wonders were also timeless classics during the 60's . thanks

  • oh the memories..sweet sweet !!

  • The girl with the dark hair from 1960 - 1970 that u may be singing about...well...her head is very much like that described as Kate Nash, "Caroline's a victim." YOu don't want to really look inside her head. U had it rite the same time. One persona sounds like one persona looks like, one persona buys from here and like Caroline who wears a crown she has diamonds in it. I love your song. Yr not dead are you. Give us another song. U r a composer...composers don't die. u were smart singing solo.

  • jolie stache

  • How stupid!....loading a song, and a third of it missing at the end. Yep you're a CLOWN !

  • Peter Sarstedt wrote the song about a girl he fell madly in love with in Vienna in 1965. She died in a hotel fire. The song was written in Copenhagen; confirmation of this fact can be found on the CD cover of The Best of Peter Sarstedt,

  • Cheers Viking

     the info is appreciated .

    Clownassasin

  • @Viking99 this is one hit wonder to be so proud of ,ther should be an album called "sing it then die"this would be track 1 side 1 ,the best of 1 hit wonders ,in the true sense of the word ,dave davies "death of a clown"would be track 2,ralph mctell streets of london track 3,,they have the right 2 dine out for eternity for creating such masterpicees ,,,,,id share my bourbon+cigars with them ,and feel honoured ,,,AMEN

  • @honkydudeman Best youtube comment ever. Totally true!

  • great song, wonderful.x

  • The song is too short, the best words are at the end, and it finishes before that. Never mind. isn't the song about Sophie Loren? No doubt someone will put me right!

  • such a lovely song.

  • A brilliant song the best ever - true and very sad really story behind it !! and he also did One more frozen orange juice - thoses were his hits but he wrote many hits for others !!!!!!!!

  • @lonelywolfy

I saw it recently on the shitty american teen 'comedy' Accepted with Justin Long & Jonah Hill.

  • @lonelywolfy Maybe The Darjeeling Limited

  • @lonelywolfy Was it The Darjeeling Linmited'?

  • @lonelywolfy The Darjeeling Limited

  • Wonderful song! The Lyriks are so true still, how much is taken just for face value!

  • whos the georgeous girl at the start introducing lovely legs

  • Probably Uschi Nerke, the female presenter of Beat Club.

  • wasn't that susan jacks the camera focused on ?

  • This song is featured in the short film "Hotel Chevalier" which is freely available and shows Natalie Portman without cloths - yummy. It's a really nice song, I like it. The way Peter pronounces the word "thoughts" make it sound like a german swearword (german word for cunt), which is kinda funny to think about.

  • First heard this as a little kid from my mother's collection. Ahahaha ahahaha! Beautiful.

  • this is a great song, but my god, those kids look fucking bored.

  • hahaha, yeah one of the chicks starts to dance a little bit but then gives up while the others are just staring into space, guess you can't really do anything with this song but listen to it

  • Yeah, you are right ... fucking bored :-D.

  • I remember that song influenced many artists of the time, it is clever and melodic and I doubt many could have pulled it off quite as he did. I wonder at the poor sods who need to belittle it, what have they recorded?

  • Who is he singing about does any one know

  • he sings about holly golightly from breakfast at tiffany´s- thats what somebody told me :-)

  • Thanks for this response

  • The rumour is that it is about the dane Nina van Pallandt.

  • Actually many believe it could have been about Sophia Loren, as it mirrors her story apparently! Bought some Balmain aftershave the other day & this song has been going through my head ever since!! Classic 60's moustache!

  • Awesome mustache, and pretty chill music too.

  • phuck your comments reflect who you are... and good luck with that.

  • Such a good song

  • show some respect

obviously you haven't got any from others

    God loves u anyway

  • this is one of the best songs from the time.. tbh a great song

  • Well it looks like Neanderthal Man is alive and kicking going under the name of Phuck?

This obviously proves that Care in the Community does not work.

I am not going to bother trading insults with this Moron. I would just like to ask him one question. Why do you bother to write on You Tube abusive remarks about a song that was recorded 40 years ago?

Have you nothing better to do with your time?

    Is your life that sad?

Now go back to your playground.

  • bernie seems to have tagged you phuck

  • phuckuSOFA...Are you talking to yourself?MORON!

  • love this song , been singing it all day. . . im 26!!! How old is it?

  • it was released in 1969 so that makes it 40 yrs since it was a hit

  • pure quality!! singing this at work today!!! im only 32!!!!

  • wow, look at that audience....wild

  • I thought it was The Kinks !

It's in the movie, Darjeeling Limited

    finally I found it !

    Paaaaris ♥

  • A classic.... :)

  • i love the music...it's beautiful and very psychadelic..but the words are pathetic!

    sorry!

but they give me the shits!

  • yes he was born in India to parents of mixed Indian and european heritage (mixed race)

Even in the 60s 70s and right up to the late 90's people were afraid to reveal there identity because of the stigmatisation of being labeled black.

thankfully the world is getting more tolerant.

  • e.g. Freddie Mercury

  • What do you mean? Gay or black?

  • Freddie was of Indian descent and he did his best to hide it for years to help avoid racism.

  • No, he hid the fact that he was gay; not that he was born in Africa of Indian descent. Mind you, having a Peter Wyngarde 'tash ought to have been a dead giveaway.

  • Freddie did hide his Indian ancestry. Brian May evens talks about it nowadays. There was a lot of racism in England in the 1970s due to the National Front and other white pride gangs.

  • How can you comment about England in the 60's ? I am English and remember the 1960s from personal experience. The National Front wasn't the cause of racism. What were the other gangs that you mentioned? Over the years there has been so much immigration into England that we must be one of the most tolerant countries on earth. There was no more racism then than now. Goodness knows why Freddie Mercury felt the need to hide the fact that he was of Indian descent. Don't blame the English for that!

  • I'm not one bit anti-British. The racist gangs I am relating to include the Teddy Boys, Blood and Honour, Combat 18 etc etc. The reason Freddie was brought up was a few months ago someone was asking if Freddie was Indian or not.

  • Teddy Boys were more of a fashion group from the 1950's when I was a lad. I've never heard of Blood and Honour, but apparently they were formed in 1987. Combat 18 formed in 1992 - a year after Freddie Mercury died. I fail to see how any of these "gangs" could have had any influence whatsoever on Freddie Mercury's career in England. Maybe it was the attitudes of other counties that bothered him. England is VERY multi racial and multi cultural.

  • Anyway, why are you talking about Freddie Mercury when this video is about Peter Sarstedt?

  • What about the Teddy Boys activities in the Notting Hill riot of 1958 where the West Indian community there were attacked.

  • I think you might be getting a bit side tracked with that - Teddy Boys weren't a racist organisation and wouldn't have affected Freddie Mercury's career. Anyway, from what you say he obviously had some fear or reasons for hiding his Asian roots. He may have thought it would held him back in his music career which is a shame. Personally I don't think it would / should have made any difference. Look at Britain's musical output over the years and you'll see it's not all white and English!

  • That it is a bit sad but I suppose we all have our weaknesses and Freddie saw his Asian roots as his weakness. I doubt anyone would have cared back then where he came from because he was way too talented for his race to hold him back. Oh I totally agree that most English people aren't racist at all BUT it's the extremists that makes it look bad for the rest of the people.

  • and they've being do it to white people ever since. it's a real shame that they have to behave this way.

  • What do you mean?

  • assaults usually with robbery in mind. don't you read the papers?

  • I thought he was born to white British parents?

  • he's Indian according to the director of darjeeling express!

    I thought he was mexican!

  • Yeah, he was born in India, The song is great and so is the darjeeling limited ;)

  • Jason King with a guitar, no, kidding, great to hear this again.

  • "With your carefully designed topless swimsuit".

I like topless women on public beaches: not in the USA. Come to Europe dudes! You'll see there what's ridiculously forbidden to you!

  • in live in Melbourne Straya and with temps topping the ton all week the beaches will be chockers with bathing beauties in all stages of undress.

    cheers Mate

  • I think that is present everywhere ;)

  • I sang this in an irish pub back in ....1992....it `s the first and only time i`ve ever sang in public...ha ha ...it`s a good song to sing to because he more or less talks through out the song, ....amazing song ,all the oap`s were dancing...god i thought i was GOD!!!!!!!ha ha
