Hey, he wasn't a one hit wonder- he also had a hit with "Frozen Orange Juice'..plus he kept working a a sing/gutatist at least up until a few years ago.
I saw Peter Sarstedt perform this with his brother Clive, 2 weeks ago in my local bar near Bedar Almeria Spain. Awesome and seeing Clive again tonight with his playing partner Maurice
I called my daughter after this song because I love it. She's Marie Claire O'Connor and I love her very very much. 'Her loveliness goes on and on, yes it does...' Can't say I didn't give you a great name! xxx
Yeah, I thought that even though it is a bit village people and if you were wearing one and were gay I think more can be read into it, but I might be wrong, just another urban myth.
@clownassasin Fantastic song. He was in Thunderbirds, he played Brains' father in 3 episodes. Some nice looking chicks in the audience, probably minging old hags by now [sorry ladies, no insult intended]. A classic song, I love it.
Couple of his other songs were "Frozen Orange Juice" which got plenty of airtime here in Oz. Also "Take off your clothes" which didn't get airtime! He was known as "The singer of Dirty Ditties". I enjoyed them back then and still do now.
always liked but creeped out at the same time by this song, much pefered his brother robins song - My resistance is Low, maybe just cos 1 of the first songs i remember hearing a lot on the radio as a kid
i was playing in a local rock band called impact when this was number 1 and decided to perform it one saturday night reading the lyrics from the sheet music i`d bought that day..it was the first and only time i ever had a standing ovation in 35yrs of semi pro playing in pubs n clubs pmsl....
Classic! What a great track. I am 28 and prefer the 60's music to any other decade. The beatles (my favourite) are the best band ever and released some quality tunes but many one hit wonders were also timeless classics during the 60's . thanks
The girl with the dark hair from 1960 - 1970 that u may be singing about...well...her head is very much like that described as Kate Nash, "Caroline's a victim." YOu don't want to really look inside her head. U had it rite the same time. One persona sounds like one persona looks like, one persona buys from here and like Caroline who wears a crown she has diamonds in it. I love your song. Yr not dead are you. Give us another song. U r a composer...composers don't die. u were smart singing solo.
Peter Sarstedt wrote the song about a girl he fell madly in love with in Vienna in 1965. She died in a hotel fire. The song was written in Copenhagen; confirmation of this fact can be found on the CD cover of The Best of Peter Sarstedt,
@Viking99 this is one hit wonder to be so proud of ,ther should be an album called "sing it then die"this would be track 1 side 1 ,the best of 1 hit wonders ,in the true sense of the word ,dave davies "death of a clown"would be track 2,ralph mctell streets of london track 3,,they have the right 2 dine out for eternity for creating such masterpicees ,,,,,id share my bourbon+cigars with them ,and feel honoured ,,,AMEN
The song is too short, the best words are at the end, and it finishes before that. Never mind. isn't the song about Sophie Loren? No doubt someone will put me right!

Not a 'one hit wonder' - frozen orange juice was a big top ten hit in the UK.
The The brothers came from Pollards Hill, Norbury, Croydon.
Peter 'retired' from the music industry because of issues to do with 'nervousness about performing' in public.
