  • been using pe foam instead of insultex which is the middle component of insultex as a pad like you are testing i made a double layer hammock and put it inbetween layers. I have been doing it for a year now been down to 12 degrees like that .

  • As a few have said Big Agnes has been doing the no insulation on bottom thing for years. Unfortunately they don't do it ultralight. Their bags are much heavier than other manufacturers conventional bags. Lately I really like using my bags unzipped in a quilt like configuration. Very comfortable and customizable.

  • @pda56 Thanks for the info I was thinking the same thing and may end up using one of these bags in the end.

  • I second the folks about Big Agnes. They've been selling bags for awhile without insulation on the bottom.

  • Im not sure if this wa mentioned but Thermarest makes a sleep system that is used with their mattresses. its called the haven 20 top bag. Its a slleeping bag witht the bottom cut out and can wrap around a neoair.

  • I'd have to think it would be difficult and inefficient to manufacture a sleeping back without down in the back. Every try to work with down feathers? It's not easy.

  • Just goes to show how things go in cycles. I have a Gerry ™ brand bag i bought in the 1970's that had no side baffle so you could shake the Goose down just to the top side of the bag if you wanted. I used (still use, actually) as a summer bag and as a liner bag in the winter.

Great product. - weighs just over a pound, which was remarkable for a 1970's bag

  • Add thermarest to the list of companies that make tha kind of bag

  • Wow, The enormity of your EGO never ceases to amaze me. Glad to know your here to save all us lemmings from the cliff. Once again Tinman you sure are a class act.

  • @HomeMadeHiker You are welcome--glad to help

  • Tinny i just came in it's raining here .looking back the product i saw came from"PerSysMedical"."Blizzard survival system" now DS1150 testing out the blizzard survival tube..looked very interesting .havefun

  • Did I get that right, that the insultex is supposed to go inside the hammock, because it does not compress and therefore retains its insulation? Sounds really great.

    Cheers

  • "Everything that can be invented has been invented."

    Charles H. Duell

Director of U.S. Patent Office, 1899

Obviously Mr. Duell never meet Tinny! LOL !

  • There ARE sleeping bags without insulation?

  • @wildwhippet And birds that don't fly---LOL

  • Tinny Peak survival reviewed a plastic emergency mummy bag that inflated.maybe something like that would work as an under quilt .it didn't weigh very much and would be off the ground ,better than leaves right .have fun

  • @MrJanaRobi I went there but could not find the review any ideas?

  • Tinny - check out Kelty's lightyear. It's a down mummy bag with little or no insulation on the bottom. Nothing new there. As to the insultex, I understand your concern with underquilts, but the tradeoff you're going to find is that the pad is going to shift under you while you're sleeping, which will be a pain. If you want a smaller/lighter underquilt, check out Warbonnet or Hammockgear. Both make UQs that weigh < 1 lb.

  • Hammock camper here. Don't have time to be "creative" and experiment with every aspect of my life. I tend to follow the lead of those who do. If I see something blairingly obvious I will change it. It's not that hammock campers are a certain way. Most people are in some aspects of their lives.

  • Always enjoyed your videos... but to say hammockers are lemings doesnt hold water. The DIY forum on HF.net alone is a massive index of innovation of not only varriations of the old /but completely new ideas. Sorry I just don't share your thoughts on hammockers. And i think the reason why everyone hangs the insulation under them is to avoid compressing the warming materia, question is does insultex require loft to retain heat?

  • @lowclasshammock Good question

  • Redwood outdoors has links to down sleeping bags with just fabric on the bottom

  • I have seen a few bags with less down in the bottom and one by rab with no down in the bottom. I don't thing main stream company's want to make them because people might think them un-safe

  • Big Agnes has a sleeping bag that doesn't have insulation on the bottom

  • Nunatak makes some bags without insulation on the back. Gossamer Gear used to sell one of these, too. They all based on the ideas of Glen van Peski.

Than there's the RAB topbag made in the UK. Sleeping without insulation on the back is not quilt only! ;-)

  • I also own a Big Agnes down bag that a few have described. I bought it because it didn't have insulation on the bottom. The sleeve for the air mattress is nice because it keeps the insulation on top when you turn during the night. Love it.

  • Some how 1st half was lost, I use a under quilt because -

MY Problem is the large amount of sweat from my nether regions,

    - the only thing that prevents me from lying in soggy wet, or jest cold bedding is the air space that an under quilt gives me, All insulation is just a matter of air space, and any condensation turns perspiration into non-insulating dead weight

This is just one mans Personal Opinion, tho I have heard other hikers, state similar thoughts Big Al

  • Big Agnes makes some bags that have no insulation on the bottom of the bag but they are made with a sleeve for a sleeping mat

  • _ again, this is My personal problem tho not that uncommon, cold weather camping,- generally not Your thing, makes the whole problem much worse, as

will several days of wet, drizzley weather, Rain or any hiking event that does not allow for airing out bedding ! Again this is a problem not every camper experiences, tho it does seem to be

common in hammock and other types of ultra lite camping

    .

. In My Opinion Big Al

  • I agree with you Tinny. How can you discover anything new by doing things the way they have always been done. I'm a little hesitant to make this a political issue. However I will, 'cause I think you might appreciate it, doing things the way they always have been done is such Reaganomics thinking! Hehe. Good for you Tinny for thinking outside the box!

  • I use an under quilt because, i need an air space between my nether regions

and any insulating ( read water adsorbing ) material, due to a near universal condensation problem. Some of us sweat so much, that we soak thru any thing that is compressed underneath us, MY major sweat area corresponds w/ my butt !

insulation that provides basic protection and warmth, results in a Wet, Cold,

and clammy, butt, bad for sleep, and a poor way to start the 2nd day of along weekrend hike !

  • Big Agnes makes a bag without insulation on the bottom. They have a sleeve that enables the pad to be placed.

  • @Nojack71 love my BA bag.

  • if insulation is compressed it fails so it should be under the hamock simple

  • if insulation is compressed it fails

  • tinny- what i do is use my ultra lite thermarest stuffed down into the upsidedown sleeping bag footbox and let the rest of the bag curl playfully around me. in sub 30 temps i put the entire thermerest inside my bag and adjust the air pressure as needed for support and warmth. both have worked well for me.i use a thermarest prolite 4 reg. 1lb 6oz. cant afford great down bag quite yet. i own lots of youre stuff, thanks for all the great info!

  • RAB also has made some bags with no insulation on bottom, several hammock forum guys have converted them to top quilts.

  • Yes Sir I agree Big Agnes. They have in fact pushed the boundaries in sveral aspects. One day I will have the funds to buy their tents.

  • Big Agnes does that

  • I agree with the under quilt business. If your going to do that you might as well get a two layer hammock and throw insulation in between in winter

  • Tinny, I would encourage more research into a few areas before you make your next video. There are already bags with out insulation from a mainstream gear manufacturer none the less. Your IX pad weighs more than comparable under quilts. You have amassed great stove knowledge I just think you need to do more research before speaking out about hammocks.

  • Tinny you have to stop with the common sense/logic stuff, your confusing way too many people:)

  • yeah top qulits with straps is what your talking about tinny also try something line a worbonit yettie. theres much less excess coverage.

  • Big Agnes

  • Big Agnes makes sleeping bags without insulation on the bottom.

  • Sleeping bag with no insulation on the bottom? That's just crazy talk. Why you might as well just go with a top quilt at that point and save the weight of the fabric under you altogether.

  • Tinny I'm not sure you really understand the hammock community. We are not lemmings. Most of the innovations you're having fun with now are from people who have tested, designed and retested many things you are just beginning with. Cuben is being integrated into quilts/under quilts and IMHO partial under quilts weighing 11.5 oz can get you into the 30*F no problem. New things to make hammocking easier, lighter and more efficient is being done constantly. SGT Rock made a sub 1 lb hammock set up.

  • There are lighter underquilt options. Check out the Baby Orca IX by Molly Mac Gear. It is 8.5 oz underquilt out of insultex.

  • Tinny, Big Agnes sleeping bags are made exactly as you describe they don't have any insulationon the bottom.

For insultex try Mac at Molly Mac Packs he makes allot of insullation items with it.

  • Sew the insulation right to the outside of the hammock just where you need it.

It would be fine to have a sleeping bag w/ no back if it has a draft free attachment to the insulated sleeping pad. The catch is that you'd have to turn inside the bag when you roll over on your side, rather than rolling the bag too.

  • wouldnt it only be good for hammock camping ..lol i toss and turn so much i would end up with no insulation on top .lol i never know where my zipper is

  • big agnes

  • Very cool idea. I use a very fine woven wool blanket because of that concept. My down bag was just a pain to pack and not efficient enough on the cold nights.

  • Big Agnes of Colorado make this type of bag. All there bags only have insulation on the top!

  • those style bags already exist and made by major manufacturures. i can make a video of a few tomorrow if i can get into our rec room at school. they are made with a sleeve instead of batting or insulation so you can slip your mat into them.

  • have you heard of big agnes bags? they use the same concept as that. i own the cross mountain model

  • You have some very good points i would like to see where you go with then!!!

  • I like your way of thinking. I wasn't going to post a comment here because nobody else has yet. And then I thought "why not be creative?" So here I am going out of the "comfort zone" And posting that I like your vid. Thumbs up!
