just left martial arts class at 8pm.. lucky to be learning this wonderful style "tang lang" ... I was surprised when I happened across this animation.. it's absolutely wonderful.. Thank you for sharing it with us.. I WANT MORE :)
i herd in the original tale the monk spied a mantis fighting a sparrow. he was observing the battle watching the sparrow tentitively learning its movements. then to his suprise the mantis defeated the sparrow. this shock the monk and from that day on he dedicated his life to mimicing the movements of the mantis.
i've heard the same story...but i heard of the monks history at the shaolin temple. he was losing all of his sparring fights went for a walk and seen the sparrow fighting the mantis and your story takes over from there. after that he won every single fight and became a famous teacher of mantis style. i've heard the stories from credible people soo i would say what you said was true.
Actually there are many versions of this tale: some say it was a Mantis battling a grasshopper, other say it where 2 Mantises fighting. But also the version with the sparrow seems good as tang lang (mantis) is a style where you don't retreat. Also for the Monk: his name was Wan Lang and he wasn't a monk but a kung-fu master who knew over 30 different styles and the shaolin temple master was a friend of his. That's what I heard. But as I said there are many versions.
A very pretty animation, the style really kept my attention and the emotions of the characters I think were more expressive because of the style. A great piece, especially with such a small team, better than half the stuff shown on TV now.
I F*IN LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ITS AWESOME. I LOVE YOU. no really I do mantis is my fav style and I never see it and this was so awesome I love it congrats on such a amazing piece hope you got a 100%
Thank you very much for all the comments. The film screened at the 2D or Not 2D Animation Festival in Seattle this past weekend where we received 1st place for animated student production. It was a great time; I got to meet Roy Disney and a bunch of talented artists.
As I've come to understand.. It's all so shrouded in legend and mystery, it's hard to say exactly what he looked like or what he did. Or even that it was created by one man.
However, this depiction is one of the most common legends that I have found.
But to drive home the point, even Wang Lang's name is up for debate.
nice video

The monk must be the life of a party:
"Hey, watch this!"
Just kidding. I like this animation, kung-fu, and shaolin monks.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO ON MANTIS BOXING
the video is based on true story on the founder of mantis boxing, Wang Lang(or Yu Qi)
there are a few variation to the original version:
1- Wang Lang is short and chubby compare to most Northern Chinese
2- Wang Lang taunted the mantis with stick and learnt
3- Wang Lang overwhelms his senior with his technique and his senior was striked few steps backwards.
