Cute i subsribed he probably said if he was reading this comment he would probably say "YAY IM GONNA BE FAMOUS WOOT WOOT HAMMER TIME". PLZ reply back cause im bored of getting no darn email.
@Rockisrandom I have always heard that we need at least a 40 - 50 gal tank to have a viable salt water aquarium. So I started out with an existing 10 gal tank, thinking that if I can keep a 10 gal tank balanced in ammonia, ph and salinity for salt water animals, I can eventually keep a bigger tank with more expensive animals. I started out with tide pool animals because they can tolerate room temperature. To my surprise, I have learned enough to have successfully raised 8 to 9 octopuses.
@elai001 That's amazing! I heard about my loaches I needed a 20 gallon, but I've kept my first one in a 5 gallon when I first got him, and he was fine!
@elai001 If he is a bimac he needs a chiller and a 50+ gallon tank, the octos you 'successfully' raised probably died from stress, lack of oxygen, poor water, no stimulation, or improper temperature. You shouldn't attempt again without learning about them first.
@xcoffeinex their very good, but i would never eat one alive. haha i havent eaten one in like 3 years because i used to have a pet octopus and i just cant stand to eat them now! R.I.P Ursula!
Now I want one of these! I shall name him Cthulu. And he shall dine on lionfish. Then he shall die because of the Lionfish venom. Then I shall get a second octopus named Cthulu II, and he shall dine on everything EXCEPT Lionfish! HUZZAH!!!
@Eragarev I think it does. When he is calm, his color is light, almost translucent. When he feels excited or threatened, he turns darker, sometimes even forms spikes on his skin.
@Eragarev I don't think he likes to be touched, but he likes to explore by touching. I let him touch me when I am changing water in the tank and one time he tried to climb out and I caught him in my cuped hands and put him back. So I don't do it on purpose, but think of it as special when it does happen.
@MrMoehomer1 I collect fresh ocean water and live food like mussels, snails, clams and crabs every other week at a local ocean beach. Then I clean the tank, change the charcoal filters for the underground filter and change water. That's it. If you don't live near the ocean, it may be more expensive and extra work. But doable for the fun of it all. Good luck.
@hotchillibot He came from the ocean in southern California so the water is pretty cold. But he is used to tidepools and so he can do well at room temperature.
@pizzamaster110211 He is a bimac, one of the easier kinds to take care of. I raised him with very little cost. Other than the initial cost of set up which is less than $40, we collected him from the ocean, get free fresh ocean water and live food every other week, and that's about it. It would be different if you don't live near the ocaen. Good luck.
@thatbboyrandom1 They are amazing and smart animals. They move with such grace and can solve problems. I have enjoyed watching and taking care of them.
@MegaGhidorah Good question. They are pretty intelligent and evolved, unless they get hit by radiation and mutate. Then who knows, the sci-fi movies may be right after all.
@MeghanOnStage They only live 6 to 18 months in the wild. I usually release them back to the ocean after 12 to 18 months. So if you buy them from a pet store, make sure that they are babies, otherwise you may only enjoy them for a few months.
@elai001 I deal with collecting live marine life in Alaska and we have to have an "educational" permit ffrom the state. We do collect live octupus for salt water aquariums. We cannot return any marine animal including octupus back into the wild since being in captivity they may aquire diseases and spead them with devastating results to wild stocks. Just thought you should know because in all wildlife some of our best intentions may have unintended consequences.
@leemayh Very good point. That is a possibility. I tried to minimize that with frequent changes of fresh ocean water and use nearly all food and material from their natural habitats. What kind of octopus do you collect and how long do they live in your tanks?
ok sorry i know this sounds really ignorant xD but... can someone tell me if it is possible to have the octopus out of the tank from time to time? would it move on the ground? can u hold it and it won't harm you?????
@nievedeuva In nature, like tidepools, they can go in and out of water in pursuit of prey or just going from one place to another. You can google amazing videos that show them leaving their tank, crawling to another tank nearby, getting a fish and then going back to their own tank. I had one trying to get out of his tank, but I was there to catch him and put him right back. If you handle them, be careful of their powerful and sharp beak on the underside of the body.
@LETTHEBEETROCK They seem to be content and not try to escape when there is ample live food and plenty of hiding places to move around just like their native surroundings.
@3Deditor Of the 6 or 7 that we had, one tried to open the cover lid and climb out once, but I was there to discourage it. Then there was one that was spooked and inked once, but I quick changed the water and no harm done. Other than those 2 incodents, I haven't had much trouble.
@3Deditor Not really because they were small and I used mostly native surrounding, including live food and water from the ocean. The only hard lesson I learned was not to have 2 babies in the same tank because as they get older, the bigger one will eat the smaller one. But then it probably happens in the wild.
@chrysanthos66 Guess we will never know for sure. But he looks for me when I try to hide from his view and he doesn't change color nor show spikes when I am near. So he must not be threatened.
What a beautiful baby! I've always wanted an octopus or cuttlefish, but I don't know if I could handle the heartbreak knowing that they just don't live very long. :/
@MrBeautymyths We collect ours snorkelling at a beach in Southern California and only choose baby ones. Some pet stores and online sources have them sometimes. Getting a baby from them is probably going to be harder. Good luck.
@swizzplane Maybe he does and I just don't recognize it. I know that he doesn't change color or show spikes when I approach the tank. So he must be comfortable enough with me that I am not a threat.
@roark100 My son and I collected hin snorkelling at a beach in southern California. Every now and then, I see octopus for sale at pet stores and on the internet.
@birdguy05761 He passed away. They live 6 to 18 months in the wild. We had him for over a year. These videos are my way of remembering him and sharing with the world how he lived and how fun and intelligent he was.
@SuperFrankNStein He stays in the tank and sometimes grabs the cleaning tools. I just wait until he lets go. I never empty more than 2/3 of the water anyway.
@SuperFrankNStein He loves to eat live food, like snails, mussels, crabs, limpets, etc., but will also eat defrosted shrimp if I move it a bit. I get food for him from tide pools every other week. Since he doesn't over-eat, I can just put all the food in. You can see them in the video.
@daggeron8 We made that mistake one time and collected 2 babies in the same tank. As they grew older, the larger of the two ate the smaller one. We won't make that mistake again. Further research showed that that's what they do even in the wild.
@IggyHazard I think you are right. I thought it is only for slugs and snails, but further research shows that it is called the same for the octopus. Thanks for sharing.
@NoSuckaMC My son and I collected him snorkelling at a beach in southern california. So he was free for us, other than a fishing license, just in case.
@elai001 bah id prefer them showing letters on their skin..and tryin to make a conversation with ya..lol...how do you play with him?...hope its nothing like fetch...:)
@notdacoolest Wish I could talk octopus. Maybe he is talking to me. I play hide and seek with him by moving just out of his view and he would strain his eyeballs or come out of his hiding place to look for me.
@09kitty23 Not this one, but I had one before that opened the lid and climbed out. Luckily I was right there and caught him in my cupped hands and put him back in. Quite an octopus encounter!!
he dont play, he try to get out of there. i have them at home too once in a while but never keep them longer than a few weeks. they are too intelligent to be living in there.
@cheripieuk Maybe, but I have seen them about the same size in the ocean. No way to verify how old they are, but since they only live between 6 to 18 months even in the wild, it may be just academic.
I have been looking to buy an octopus for a while. I was wondering if you knew a place on the east coast of PA where you can get one from a store or order one.
if you listen close you can hear the octopus telling itself if i do this, and go up here i can get out of this tank, and crawl back to my cave in long beach with my female octopus, and get away from this human videotaping me at the moment
@dalecanonrock We have moved to northern California where live food for the octopus is not readily available and I may not be able to release them when they are too big. But I stilll travel back to southern CA every now and then. I hope that one day soon, I will have another one when I can work out all the technical challenges.
He's sizing up the tank and trying to work out how to escape! I caught one last week while diving and it took my dive knife off me. I think you should let it go before it escapes and commits a crime while you are sleeping!
how big can they get?

beautiful.do they grow only with the tank size.i have little idea,i do love them though x
cheripieuk 1 year ago
@cheripieuk Maybe, but I have seen them about the same size in the ocean. No way to verify how old they are, but since they only live between 6 to 18 months even in the wild, it may be just academic.

if you got him from the ocean, you should give him a largerr tank. cause its 2 small 4 him.

I have been looking to buy an octopus for a while. I was wondering if you knew a place on the east coast of PA where you can get one from a store or order one.
tashaxxava 1 year ago
@tashaxxava Sorry, but I don't. We collected ours in the ocean.

can i keep one with a 14 cm red eared turtle?
mikaboom123 1 year ago
@mikaboom123 Isn't the turtle fresh water? The octopus lives in salt water.

If u look at videos of octopi, that is more of an evasive and aggressive display.
Still, amazing creature, and beautiful aquarium!

actuiley your suppose to say octopuses not octopi. I read it in science book.

@dalecanonrock No, he passed away.
elai001 1 year ago
@elai001 These videos are my way of remembering him and sharing with the world how he lived and how fun and intelligent he was.
elai001 1 year ago
@elai001 you have a new one ?
dalecanonrock 1 year ago
@dalecanonrock We have moved to northern California where live food for the octopus is not readily available and I may not be able to release them when they are too big. But I stilll travel back to southern CA every now and then. I hope that one day soon, I will have another one when I can work out all the technical challenges.
elai001 1 year ago
how can these freaking koreon people eat them and say their stamina will increase by eating these?
FunKCX 1 year ago
@FunKCX Hopefully my videos give a different perspective of what an octopus is and how intelligent it is.
elai001 1 year ago

nynono 1 year ago
@nynono I understand that the bimacs live 6 to 18 months in the wild.

I really want an octopus as a pet, at first, I wanted Hermit crabs, but then changed my mind to octopuses because they're way cooler
artz900 1 year ago
@lostkid19 They are and so smart, too.

He's sizing up the tank and trying to work out how to escape! I caught one last week while diving and it took my dive knife off me. I think you should let it go before it escapes and commits a crime while you are sleeping!
