Hey, NUTNFANCY, you probably won't read it, but I'll post anyway:
How about CS Kukri Machete review?
It's rather obvious that Gurkha Kukri will outperform the Kukri Machete-but the BIG question is:
BY HOW MUCH?
Given that the Machete is over 10 TIMES cheaper than Gurkha Kukri ($26.99 vs $299.99 on their website) I was thinking that maybe-just maybe- the Machete would be a better choice if you include cost-effectiveness factor.
The price difference is HUGE,but is performance difference that big?
@ryc3rz Read the description; SK 5 steel. I own a CS kopis machete and good luck splitting or chopping wood with that! I own the CS kukri SK5 older model, black coated or painted blade. It's a beast, you can't compare those two. The kukri machete is probably the best chopper in machete category tough.
Hey have you guys checked out the Ontario Knife Co. kukri? A great blade! Very comprable to the SK-5 CS kukri and made in the good ole' U.S.A. from 1095. About $55 online. Check it out! Long live the kukri!
I got the Ka-Bar kukri for around 75 bucks. In my experience i've taken down full size trees with the hand battle axe. Take it or leave it, thought I'd throw it out there. But it does come with a leather sheath. My biggest criticism. I've also done some small amount of knife throwing with it and I had some success.
Love the video ! Keen subscriber of yours now. Would be great to see you do a video on a native kukri . Awesome quality native kukri's from "kukri house online" . They make kukri's for the Gurkhas in the British army. Love to see your take on them.
Guys, I live in northern Australia, Id like the SK5 version. Is there any way to get my hands on an already duracoated kukri so I dont have to send it back to be duracoated?
just picked up the SK5 version for $126.00 SCORE!!! you can get them on Ebay for this price by the seller named Poor-Fish...this is the BEST price on line at all anywhere right now i would seriously recommend buying this blade!! it is awesome!! nutnfancy this is a great review...i have a lot of diff cold steel items but these things are BAD ASS...
I got a real problem with people praising the so-called original or genuine kukri's.
Not buying into it, period.
I don't believe in the pretended curls, or you'd have to do your best at sucking to sharpen.
And I don't believe a word of these people popping out of the high grass with "months of experience" with the blades. Reeks of lies, look like lies. And lies they remain without an attempt at a demo. Nor do I think you can make a sturdier kukri without adding a LOT of weight. like double
Nutnfancy huge fan of what you do. I've purchased a Khukuri from Nepal through KHHI and I think you should get one from them for a review. I've had mine for three months and it goes through everything and its a third of the price of Cold Steel's. Check em out and keep reviewin!
@FranklynFamine It would definently not perform the same, that one is basically a machete shaped like a kukri, equally thin and flexible, this one is built like a real kukri, huge thick knife.
I had a kukri gifted to me by my Dad that he brought back from one of his business trips abroad when I was kid. Although the steel was not as good as the steel used these days the shape and weight and function was so different than the other knifes I had it always impressed me. I've been carrying and collecting knives since I was a little kid. (I'm 50 now).Right now my all around favorite knife for "expeditions" is a Bear Damascus Bowie. But the kukri in this review has caught my fancy. Thanks.
you gave me the final push i needed to purchase this, nutn. and I never looked back. The ony critisism I have about this item, get it coated. Coating prevenst rust in regular use, and there is no reason you couldn't scrape it off to work with your firesteel if needed. Fuck excuses, get it done.
@ViolentKisses87 basically 1/8 of an inch down to the bevel of the blade. there's not much of a wedge, but it still works ok for batoning, it just gets stuck sometimes. the ghurka might be ok at batoning, but im not sure how the kukri angle would affect it.
you know for the first 30 seconds or so, i thought this would be it - the video where nutnfancy would finally shut up for a minute. i soon realized the huge mistake i had made
@Novashank You know, for the first 30 seconds or so, I thought this would be it - the video where trolls would finally shut up for a minute. I soon realized the huge mistake I had made.
Cold steel definitely has good blades, after I watched the "San Mai III" video I plan on getting one for a WROL knife. Terrifying, great video as always by the way.
this is the san mai 3 version in the video he says its not buts the san mai 3 is distinct by the cross blade marking on the blade. the sk-5 version does not have this marking.. go to the cold steel website for verification. sorry
Okay, i just revisited my point about the CS Gurkha Kukri. After few month of woodland serious use, (not even true abuse), the thin edge can't withstand the power that blows through the thick spine of the blade. The edge just get curled (no chipping actually) and you have a very hard time getting it back hammering it. Coming back from Nepal, bringing back 2 Khukuris from the honorable company "Khukuri House" at Thamel at an outrageous price and a amazing quality, the CS Gurkha kukri is a toy.
@Rhinoch8 wow, that's a shame. for the price you would think it would hold up better. what kind of chopping (what species of wood, etc) were you doing? nuttin fancy seems to chop mostly softer wood like pine. i live in central texas and would be chopping harder woods like oak (maybe even osage orange, but that will ruin any blade). then again, if i am going to be doing a lot of chopping, im reaching for a hatchet not a kukri.
@xekul Mostly Pine and dried sticks of beech from Europe. With the CS Kukri, what you gain in deeper bites is lost with a finer edge fragility. I was waiting for a blade that could withstand abuse, but i think it is fine as long as you whack through pieces of meat like what CS designed it for. It is a great butchering knife in deed, but i wouldn't recommend it as an outdoors kukri. Better stick to the traditional shape that has been used for long times.
@Rhinoch8 if i ever heard a nonsensical attempt at marketing on this channel this would be it. You wouldn't believe what I splitted with this thing. And I challenge any ANY nonsense you spout buddy. I don't believe a word you say. And not wasting a drop more of saliva on you.
@Xarcas Sure... I'm still using the CS Kukri you know. I'm just pissed of its edge being all curly, when it is supposed to be some sort of badass knife. It is fine in survival, but this edge has been designed to slice through things, mostly meat according to the CS Manager movies, and not fat twisted like shit chunks of pine...
@Rhinoch8 sorry, I went a lill overboard.. I do however stand by this particular piece of equipment. I swear by it. And your approach just screemed bs all over it. Is it the perfect kukri, no.. for it's price yes! And talking about reforging the blade doesn't exacly help your argument. This is THE kukri for the surivalist no doubt in my mind, all the way down to the sheath. CS will regret taking it out of production.
24:15 you are talking about native kukuris. check out kukuri house 3 chira beast. hone it to a razor sharp edge and BAM. also get a modified handle on it. DO NOT GET THE ORIGINAL HANDLE. BECAUSE THE FLARED END SUX and hurts your hand if you have big hands. i am going to get the end cut off.
after i first wanted the kurki machete from cold steel i thought hey i made my self a bowie so i'll make one it your right that front end of the blade is magnificant it is awsome it works.
Yep, I purchased the san mai becuase of the rust reasons. I took it to a bon fire party (bring your own chopper). The guys about wet their pants when I cut the first limb in one stroke. I rendered many trees that day. Amazing knife/axe/minisword. I beat the bejesus outa that knife and only managed to roll the edge on a locust tree( really hard wood). Smacked it back with a hammer, perfect. If you get one use it, it can take it. Take your time and don't cut off any body parts. (NO JOKE)
Hey Nutnfancy, I really want to know something. How does the Buck Hoodlum compare against the Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri? I really like those two, and they are extremely functional as they are cool-looking. But the problem is, is that I can get only one. So how do they compare in anyway?
P.S. ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO MAKE A SECOND NUTFANCY KNIFE SHOWDOWN LIKE YOU DID WITH THE TAC-FOLDERS, entitled,
"Buck Hoodlum VS. Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri: Showdown!"
I would like to say shame on you for even considering cold steel. I've never been a fan of cold steel, they're just way too over the place in products making "cool" stuff. You're right that you have to be picky about knives overseas. I've seen a few "made in china' knives for pennies on the dollar.
As for me, i am more of a traditionalist (yes heavier stuff is my thing lol)
Could you do a ontario kukri review? Price difference is there and the SP series (minus sheath) has always been amazing.
Hey great review. I do own the San Mai III version and have to say it works just as good. One person said it would chip and I have used mine with no problems. I got lucky and only spent $350 for mine, but I knew the shop owner and he hooked me up with dealers cost. Great knife and great review. This knife is always on my EDC. I did take 10 feet of rope and looped the kukri over my shoulder with two surgeon knots, made carrying the knife better.
The cold steel Gurkha Kukri is better than any Nepalese one I have had. Cold steel made a better knife than the original designers do. This is probably all around the best fixed blade knife in the world, no joke, no exaggeration.
I have heard from my friend that you can't truely call it a Gurkha Kukri until you have killed with it. I don't particularly know that it's true but it would make sense if it would be the case, wouldn't you say?
@kop4321 that the san mai version, this is sk-5 which can be bought for 170. and the san mai is somewhere in the 250 range if you look around. don't forget you get what you pay for
@kop4321 Your thinking of the san mai III steel which is not the what is shown in the video. Aus 8 is the steel used in this model. And your price is still about $100 higher than the San mai III is.
I'm a huge fan of your videos! This is another great review that I've watched three times while deliberating about my purchase. Thank you for your contribution to the decision!
I would love to see a review on some of the Nepalese kukri(s) from either Khukuri House Handicraft Industries or Khukuri House Thamel. They seem to have a really good quality/price ratio.
Dont get the San Mai III version its brittle VG-1 inner core will chip out if you hit the ground or bone and the outside layer is cheap 420J steel. Not worth it the only reason its expensive is its hard to make and it has a convex grind.
Awesome knife, but how does it compare to a quality Nepalese Kurkri? The real deal is made from steel used in truck suspensions and can be had for 30-60 dollars.
@Hypatia1951 The nepaleese Kukri that i traded a ka bar for in kuwait had a thicker blade than the CS Kukri and a wooden handle. When it broke i realized that it had a severe design flaw-the tang was extremely small and it was not a full tang at all.Even though the CS kukri i have has a thinner blade, it chops better than the nepaleese one i had and CS Kukri's have a larger tang and a more durable handle.
wow! i asked if u could review this blade i think over a year ago. i just stoped looking to see if u did it or not and i found this by accident trying to find a video on best way to sharpen mine. thx so very much for making it. i got the san mai III version lol. lower maintanance. thx again
In 2003 when my unit helped invade Iraq, I traded a ka bar for a real authentic Ghurka Kukri. My fellow Marines were impressed with the blade until I broke it cutting down a tree. When i got back state side i saw a cold steel kukri in a knife shop and i bought it. I have put that blade through the ringer and the only real damage to it is a ding in the blade where i accidently hit a rock while cutting down some bushes. I have used the cs khukri heavily for over 7 years and I am still impressed.
Just got this baby... wiped down with marine tuff cloth, and it's ready to GO! My shoulder sling sheath/water bottle system is SICK! I'll be testing it against the Outcast during my trip across the southwest.
@MackaliMesut it is WAY better than the SK-5 version. It not only does it have San Mai III Steel, It also features VG-1 Stainless Steel. Only downside? It's extremely expensive. So if you want to get the San Mai II version, you better get ready to spend.
Hey could you please make a video of your sharpening method for the kukri? I have heard of using a sharpening puck, but I got my Kukri dura-coated and I think I will end up scraping a lot of it off if I use a sharpening puck, thanks.
@GoFR101 Hey man I aint nutinfacny but i do own this knife and a real nepal kukri and what you need to do is get a diamond sharpening rod. The rod is the only way to get the recurved part sharp if you use a puck only a small portion of the blade will get sharp. I use the diamond rod then a ceramic rod then a thin narrow strop and i can shave hair from my face with my coldsteel kukri.
One funny thing you mentioned. Melting down wagons and making blades. My gf got me a bolo from the Philippians. It's made from melted car springs. Heavy as can be but a real work horse. Rust is a BIG issue but it's one hefty hard and tough blade. Good video I don't think I need the Sk-5 for my use thow the 1055 will do it for me. Keep up the good work!
What happened to the vid of you and Crockett chopping with the kukri and the junglas in the woods? I love that vid. The martial arts yell when you chop the limb totally cracks me up.
I'm going to point you to Cold Steel's faq steel section. You could say I have an advanced understanding of Metallurgy. Difference between the 1055 steel and SK-5 is %carbon. I can explain the science in a message if you wish. Short version 1055 is going to dull faster than SK-5. It comes down to how much your going to use the blade, how hard you are going to thrash it, & then have to sharpen it. For my occasional use the 1055 is plenty hard and good enough for me.
@Armando7654 Stainless steel in general is garbage for heavy chopping; it lacks ductility and toughness. Do you actually think stain resistance makes a steel higher quality? All 'worthy blades' for heavy chopping will rust, even high alloy ingot steels like INFI.
@DeltaMartialArt Delta, when used properly a lanyard will prevent a large blade from slipping out of your hand and flying anywhere. It certainly won't result in a fulcrum effect or direct the blade back towards you. However that will happen if used incorrectly. Nutnfancy's technique isn't the safest. A safe method is to loop the lanyard around your thumb and then around the back of your hand. This stops the knife slipping out of a sweaty hand. If it does slip, it'll swing away.
I have a San Mai III trailmaster and have noted chipping while batoning. Weather conditions were very mild. I love the knife but I hate to spend the money again and have a chipping problem. I just ordered the SK-5 Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri and am looking forward to thumping on it. Thanks for the advice! Keep on thumping!
@MajorKoenig2 though san mai iii may be tougher, many people have had the edge chip due to the vg1 core. Edge retention may not be as good as VG1 but carbon steel is easier to sharpen.
Cold Steel's heat treatment and purity of smelting is what makes it the best. It's not necessarily the compund as it is the forging process. Thats where your money goes. Everything Cold Steel kicks ass. Been hunting, camping and stabbing stuff with em for 23 years. Money well spent no regrets.
1080 is a combination of a spring steel and a hard carbon steel it should be easier to sharpen then 1095 it is a softer steel not a weak steel it is flexible unlike 1095 which will never move. 1080 is great for a machete. while 1095 is better for a smaller chopper
I see you praising this particular kukri, but i was wanting to get your opinion on the ka-bar kukri (52$ on amazon) version;if you have one. It's made of 1085 carbon steal and is quite a bit cheaper ....money is on a tight side and i would like the cold steel version ,but i can't see myself spending 180$ ..
i just "added to cart"

@2facedninja it stands for "The Nutnfancy Project" which is what Nutn calls his YT channel. Hope that helps.

@AirForceAce3571 Actually that helps a lot! Thanks! lol

Ookaminokemono 7 months ago

I did take 10 feet of rope and looped the kukri over my shoulder with two surgeon knots, made carrying the knife better.

thaddeusabear 8 months ago
The cold steel Gurkha Kukri is better than any Nepalese one I have had. Cold steel made a better knife than the original designers do. This is probably all around the best fixed blade knife in the world, no joke, no exaggeration.
MrMadmardin 8 months ago
I have heard from my friend that you can't truely call it a Gurkha Kukri until you have killed with it. I don't particularly know that it's true but it would make sense if it would be the case, wouldn't you say?

@kop4321 that the san mai version, this is sk-5 which can be bought for 170. and the san mai is somewhere in the 250 range if you look around. don't forget you get what you pay for
Hogre0knifenut 7 months ago
@Hogre0knifenut Not worth it still. There are cheaper tools that will do the job just as well.
kop4321 7 months ago
@kop4321 Your thinking of the san mai III steel which is not the what is shown in the video. Aus 8 is the steel used in this model. And your price is still about $100 higher than the San mai III is.

I would love to see a review on some of the Nepalese kukri(s) from either Khukuri House Handicraft Industries or Khukuri House Thamel. They seem to have a really good quality/price ratio.
bamman62 8 months ago
Thumbs up if you thought the blade had a black coating when you first saw it.
ScottishRugby23 8 months ago
Dont get the San Mai III version its brittle VG-1 inner core will chip out if you hit the ground or bone and the outside layer is cheap 420J steel. Not worth it the only reason its expensive is its hard to make and it has a convex grind.
justyoustupid 8 months ago
Awesome knife, but how does it compare to a quality Nepalese Kurkri? The real deal is made from steel used in truck suspensions and can be had for 30-60 dollars.
Hypatia1951 8 months ago
@Hypatia1951 The nepaleese Kukri that i traded a ka bar for in kuwait had a thicker blade than the CS Kukri and a wooden handle. When it broke i realized that it had a severe design flaw-the tang was extremely small and it was not a full tang at all.Even though the CS kukri i have has a thinner blade, it chops better than the nepaleese one i had and CS Kukri's have a larger tang and a more durable handle.
TheRealValentino 8 months ago
wow! i asked if u could review this blade i think over a year ago. i just stoped looking to see if u did it or not and i found this by accident trying to find a video on best way to sharpen mine. thx so very much for making it. i got the san mai III version lol. lower maintanance. thx again
spaghetti2021 8 months ago
In 2003 when my unit helped invade Iraq, I traded a ka bar for a real authentic Ghurka Kukri. My fellow Marines were impressed with the blade until I broke it cutting down a tree. When i got back state side i saw a cold steel kukri in a knife shop and i bought it. I have put that blade through the ringer and the only real damage to it is a ding in the blade where i accidently hit a rock while cutting down some bushes. I have used the cs khukri heavily for over 7 years and I am still impressed.

MackaliMesut 9 months ago
@MackaliMesut it is WAY better than the SK-5 version. It not only does it have San Mai III Steel, It also features VG-1 Stainless Steel. Only downside? It's extremely expensive. So if you want to get the San Mai II version, you better get ready to spend.

Hey could you please make a video of your sharpening method for the kukri? I have heard of using a sharpening puck, but I got my Kukri dura-coated and I think I will end up scraping a lot of it off if I use a sharpening puck, thanks.
GoFR101 9 months ago

Keep up the good work!

what's your opinion of 1055 steel?
alex61761 10 months ago
@alex61761
GunsAnonymousGA 9 months ago
You are talking about chopping al the time, but you take a knife over an axe...
Monkeyboymug 10 months ago
Hey in this vid I saw the ontario sp50 how do u like the knife?
warriorsbaseball5 10 months ago
$ 166 and it rusts and you call that a worthy blade? So much for your brand name.
Sk5, overrated
Armando7654 10 months ago
@Armando7654 look your steels up. s30v also rusts.....sk5 for this knife is very appropriate especially with CS's heat treat.
BajamBM90 10 months ago
@Armando7654 Stainless steel in general is garbage for heavy chopping; it lacks ductility and toughness. Do you actually think stain resistance makes a steel higher quality? All 'worthy blades' for heavy chopping will rust, even high alloy ingot steels like INFI.
RebelWrestler45 10 months ago

Keep on thumping!
bobosantos1 10 months ago
is the regular CS gurkha kukri better than the san mi for reliability?
MajorKoenig2 11 months ago
@MajorKoenig2 though san mai iii may be tougher, many people have had the edge chip due to the vg1 core. Edge retention may not be as good as VG1 but carbon steel is easier to sharpen.

Great review! How does it compare to the ones made by Ontario or Smith&Wesson?
duyt101 11 months ago
Cold Steel's heat treatment and purity of smelting is what makes it the best. It's not necessarily the compund as it is the forging process. Thats where your money goes. Everything Cold Steel kicks ass. Been hunting, camping and stabbing stuff with em for 23 years. Money well spent no regrets.
thamizzarc 11 months ago
1080 is a combination of a spring steel and a hard carbon steel it should be easier to sharpen then 1095 it is a softer steel not a weak steel it is flexible unlike 1095 which will never move. 1080 is great for a machete. while 1095 is better for a smaller chopper
andrewubaldi 11 months ago
I see you praising this particular kukri, but i was wanting to get your opinion on the ka-bar kukri (52$ on amazon) version;if you have one. It's made of 1085 carbon steal and is quite a bit cheaper ....money is on a tight side and i would like the cold steel version ,but i can't see myself spending 180$ ..

@skoVBA2 The ka-bar kukri is a nice knife, but its nothing like the CS, the CS is an insane knife. But for the price, the kabar is great.
