Has anyone heard Nezhdanova? Although a Soprano, flexibility is the same for any voice
that is trained according to the "distinguishing marks" of the Golden Era of Singing (i.e.) not pushing to enlarge the voice or covering, both of which are representative of
the downfall of singing as heard everywhere today.
I enjoy a very wide variety of musical genres, but this is probably my most-watched YouTube video. I've seen other performances (I loved Callas) and can related to much of the criticism. But in the end, Vesselina remains my sweetheart. She must be a fun person to be with. I wish!
Heh, heh, I know. We're a spoiled bunch, ay? :o) It sure is great to live in the golden age of coloratura mezzos! If only I can hear them live more often. I really live in the wrong part of the world when it comes to opera. :o(
Oh, don't complain, try living in Serbia for a while. :/ Yes, we have Marijana Mijanovic (The Contralto of our time) as our ambassador in the baroque music world. But do you think she comes here to spread the wonderful music? Hardly.
She has the best low register (does she use chest voice? - I've always had a difficult time distinguishing it) of the current batch of mezzo-sopranos singing coloratura roles, and is very expressive, but for some reason she rubs me the wrong way. A pity.
She's definitely the funniest Rossini singer I've ever seen/heard! It's great to watch something that's so different! Thanks for these great clips, Smorg!
My pleasure, matie. :o) I love how she isn't afraid to mime to get herself into the music even in a concert setting (she's taken some criticism for it from people who find it distracting, but I love it because it looks genuine to me). :o)
She is definatly amazing to watch live and in concert. The mimeing and gesturing can be distracting depending (example Dessay in studio, some Gruberova, some Podles, in my humble wee opinion, not that it's a bad thing.). But when Kasarova does it....it adds another depth to it, for me anyway. Thanks for the great post ^_^
Whatever the critics may say, one thing is for sure - she is never conventional, never ordinary. She is not scared to turn the performance into parody and to break the legato from time to time to make the whole thing sound more expressive and the way she sees it. And her voice is able to convey so different feelings. I will never get tired listening this piece over and over again.
you are absolutly right. i will never get tired to here here in every role she is singing.
i was really sad that i was to late to hear marylin horne live, but i´m so happy to be in the times of kasarova. i heard her so often and she was always great

What an interesting performance. She managed to be "different" without sacrificing musicality. I would think Maestro Rossini would be elated.

Thank heavens that Marilyn Horne has not one but three proper heirs to her legacy : Ewa Podles, Jennifer Larmore and, of course, Vesselina Kasarova.

I lurv Vesselina but this is super-mannered and she has "Horne-itis", opening all them damn vowels for no apparent reason. A mess.
